It surprised me how naturally the park gave off that youthful atmosphere without trying too hard. The open spaces and colorful areas almost felt like spots made for taking pictures, and they did not cost anything to enjoy, which makes them perfect for teenagers who like hanging out and being creative. It was my first time at Whaley Park, and I did not realize how much there was to enjoy until I walked around. I appreciated how easy it was to relax there without feeling rushed or crowded, even with all the teens playing games, taking photos, and talking with each other. Some parts of the park looked a little older or worn down, which is part of why I am giving it four stars instead of five, but nothing took away from the overall experience. I never doubted that the visit would turn out the way I hoped it would. I have only visited Whaley Park once before writing this review, but it ended up being one of the more enjoyable and energetic parks I have been to in a long time. I would highly recommend that teenagers go there because they would love the open spaces, the sports areas, the photo spots, and the creative vibe. It gives them a place to have fun, take pictures, and feel inspired in a simple and playful environment.

It's quiet. Shady. Lots of grass. Gentle hills that make throwing a ball way more fun than it should be. Bring a blanket, park nearby (just not directly in front of the lawn bowling unless you're okay gambling with the occasional errant ball ), then relax. Watch the bowlers, throw a ball for your dog, read a book, eat a snack, take a nap, or just touch some grass for a while. My review is really just for this little corner of the park because that's where we spent our afternoon. But Recreation Park itself has a huge dog park, a playground, tennis courts, golf, ball fields, a bandshell, and even an area for fly-casting practice. Last weekend I drove out to El Dorado Park looking for this exact feeling. Ironically, this little corner of Recreation Park delivered it even better.

This is a great place to picnic, do outdoor activities and walk your dog. On this side of the park, you'll find 6 baseball diamonds, a 15-court tennis center, 2 basketball courts, a skateboard park, a disc golf course, soccer fields, a golf course, a community center and a newly renovated duck pond. I've been waiting years for the duck pond to be complete and I like what they've done. You can finally walk all around it and it is so peaceful. The area is teeming with ducks, geese, seagulls, coots, and other birds. There are even turtles in the pond.

It's much too small compared to Rynerson Park, just steps away in terms of displacement, but over a mile away in terms of distance. However, the trail both inside and outside the park can provide a nice place to blow off some steam and perhaps "go and smell the roses" as alluded to in those Travelocity commercials. You might find some roses somewhere along the nature trail outside the park, but you won't find any inside this park. In fact, the plantation within the grounds isn't as abundant, which shouldn't come off as surprising since I previously mentioned how small the park is. However, there is plenty enough open space to hold a nice summer camp, which the City of Lakewood does annually. I personally think Rynerson Park would be a better place to hold a summer camp as it would allow for so much more activities in the wider, more open space just on the other side of the San Gabriel River. But then again, Monte Verde does have an amphitheater and even a fire ring, neither of which is found at Rynerson. The park has a lodge called the S. Mark Taper Foundation Vista Lodge, which I suppose you could compare to a ski resort lodge minus the fact that you're not skiing in the park lol. I also suppose it's used pretty frequently for special events, and you'll know that from a sign at the entrance indicating that there is a private event going on. The nature trail inside the park is about a quarter mile long. There's a fair amount of vegetation, but not a whole lot that you'll likely see more on the nature trail outside the park instead. So far, I've been to the park three times. The first time, the front gate was closed, so all I could do was explore the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail. The second time, there was a baby shower at the event, and I didn't want to intrude. The third time, there was another private event, but it had just ended, so I got to take a couple laps on the nature trail inside the park. It was nice to explore for once, but like I alluded to earlier, don't expect a whole lot. In fact, one of the placards was completely worn out, and I could barely read the title of that placard. There's also a barbecue/picnic area by the lodge, which would be perfect for those summer camps that I mentioned earlier in this review. I can also see the grounds being used a lot by organizations like boy scouts and girl scouts. However, it'd be hard to play a pickup game of soccer there; that's more of a Rynerson thing if that makes sense. Overall, it's not a bad park to go to, but depending on your interests, you may find it pales in comparison to your neighborhood park. I believe it could use a revamp because the park looks like it has seen better days. Hopefully, that will happen sooner rather than later!

Apparently the old man was upset that the field belonged to him between 4-8pm. The coach for other team explained he understood and thought nobody was going to use it since it was almost 5pm and was looking for a field to practice. The old guy could have explained in a monotone manner calm demenor in front of kids but noooooo he had to be heard. Grumpy old man. Oh and by the way the fields are in horrible condition. Mound was totally off and infield had more waves than the ocean. Bad place to be and bring your kids to not only because of horrible people but because of horrible field conditios and possible injuries.

This is a very tiny neighborhood park literally located between two homes. It's long and narrow and…read morehas swings and a jungle gym as well as a few metal benches. There are two metal picnic tables although one is bent up pretty badly. The grass is very patchy. I wouldn't exactly call it a "nice" park but it's good to bring the kids to play for awhile or for your dog to take care of business if you lived in the neighborhood.
