Midlands, AKA JM Construction, rebuilt my deck and barbecue after it was damaged in a fire. They…read moreweren't responsible for the immediate cleanup, but they had to start with a lot of demolition of the old deck, while preserving the substructure and parts that I wanted to retain. The estimator, Ron, worked with me on the initial plan, which ultimately turned out very well. Our project manager did a good job on coordination of labor and materials, but needed some prompting on communication of work schedules. We arrived at a workable solution. I have specific shout outs for two of the carpenters, Antonio and Hector. They are meticulous craftsmen, and did an amazing job of piecing the deck boards together around the original bench supports that extend through deck into concrete footings. Each support had to be templated and then precisely cut into the pricey 20-foot Trex flooring planks. The results are near perfect, down to matching the faux wood grain on the top of the planks. Antonio did most of the framing on the new barbecue island, which required adapting it to the geometry of the original substructure. It turned out better to than the original that was lost in the fire. It is said that a good contractor is one who shows up to work sober and finishes the job. The team at JM is in a league above that, which is why I would recommend them not just to strangers, but also to my friends.

I highly recommend Midlands Restoration for home mitigation. Earlier this year, a bathroom leak…read morecaused damage downstairs. Midlands Restoration handled the mitigation professionally. They arrived on time, identified the root cause, and quickly initiated repairs by removing damaged flooring. Their insurance documentation was excellent. Midlands Restoration worked extremely hard and I was very impressed with their skills, work ethic, and reliable service during the stressful situation. Their direct coordination with my insurance company really helped ease the burden. For any home repair or water mitigation needs, Midlands Restoration has my wholehearted recommendation.

WATCH OUT FOR THIS COMPANY. My experience was unforgivable…read more They did not give me an overall estimate as to what it would cost because they told me the insurance company would cover it minus my deductible. I got two other previous estimates from different companies who each priced it at less than $2000 total therefore I was educated as to what the duties consisted of, how long it would take, and about how much it would cost. This company convinced me that they would absolutely go through my homeowners insurance, therefore me only being out of pocket my deductible. I decided to go with this company. This company started the work, was there maybe three hours, did not do certain duties that other companies explained they would have done, and then left their equipment pumping waste water from under my house into my yard instead of disposing of it properly. As days went by, I never heard or seen of another contractor again from this company. I had to call them to make sure they had not forgotten. They asked me if I would turn their pumps off for them. This should not be the homeowners responsibility. Once the job was complete, I did not even hear from this company for three months. I assumed this was the process of them going through my insurance company. They then come back on their original statement and said "sorry, the insurance will not cover it." It was at this time when they proceeded to send me a bill for a total amount that was more than three times the highest estimate I had gotten before this company said my insurance company would cover it. There is nothing about this company, and this transaction that was professional, communicated, or decent. This is extremely bad business. If anyone else has had this kind of problem with this company, please speak up. This behavior should not be acceptable.

I am extremely disappointed with Paul Davis Restoration of Greater Columbia and how our restoration…read moreprocess has been handled. The initial visit took place on November 13, 2025, with Topher Daniel (Recon Estimator). During that visit, he explained the process and stated he would return once mitigation was complete. My husband notified Topher on November 18, 2025 that mitigation had been completed, and again on November 24, 2025, after we received confirmation from USAA that payment was issued and approval was given for Paul Davis Restoration to begin the restoration process in our home. Since then, communication has been awful. We were understanding and took into consideration that the holidays were approaching, but there was ample time to at least initiate the project or provide clear communication. Multiple areas of our home were affected by the leak, including two bedrooms, the hallway floor and wall, and the bathroom floor. As of now, our toilet is still sitting in the hallway, which speaks volumes about the lack of urgency. Finally, on December 9, 2025, we met with Miles M., Project Manager, to discuss and select flooring. A week later, Miles dropped off two boxes of flooring for the bathroom. During that visit, I asked for a start date and was assured the project would begin the following week (December 21, 2025), with a few days off for the holidays -- which we were completely fine with. However, there has been zero communication since then. Today is January 5, 2026, and no work has been started, no updates provided, and no follow-up communication initiated. If Paul Davis Restoration of Greater Columbia did not have the manpower or staff to complete this job, they should have declined it rather than accepting payment from USAA and leaving our home in this condition. This entire experience has added unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation. I truly hope USAA thinks twice before referring this company again.
