I'm all for sustainability and eco-living, What I'm not a fan of is looking bad while doing it. (Google Birkenstocks and you'll see what I mean.) Thankfully I have Biome to cater to my shallow ways. This little store stocks a large range of natural and eco-friendly products, from BPA free water bottles to eco diapers. Biome also specialises in locally made Australian wares, and has some of the best natural beauty products I've seen (In particular be sure to checkout the organic skincare.) What I love most about this store is the range of style-y but practical home wares available. (I am particularly enamoured with the traditional japanese bento boxes for sale.) Good looking AND good for the environment, I'd head to Biome if I were you.

It's the silly season and you can't bear the idea of cluttering up your friends' and relatives' lives with more junk. What to do for presents? I love the idea of buying "ethical" and practical presents for everyone. I figure whilst contributing to our consumerist world at Christmas time, one may as well spread the "green" message whilst at it. Biome has heaps of little things that make fantastic, useful presents. I like their metal lunch boxes with colourful lids, available in a number of sizes; I like their sturdy jute shopping bags that are so pretty they could double as a handbag or book bag; and, I'm a big fan of their beautiful, but small, range of wooden toys for kids. Biome sells tons of other little things, some more useful than others (they sell a lot of stationery, like printed notebooks, which may be made from recycled paper, but in my way of thinking, it's more green to write on a scrap of old office paper). Nonetheless, these things make good gifts. Biome is a great little store--a little expensive, but that's the price you pay for shopping "ethically". I think it's worth it.

This mainly due to the size allowing them to really fill up the place with a wide variety of goods. I am used to health food stores being the size of boutiques, not much larger than and average sized bedroom kind of thing. Surprisingly, 'Mrs Flannery's' is the size of a small IGA or your local food store. It has a few aisles like the ones you find at the Supermarket! Here you will find, organic cereal, wide range of nuts and whole grains as well as natural household and beauty products. I am fond of their peanut butter which is literally grounded peanuts with no additives, preservatives and flavourings. Of course shopping here is not as cheap as the local supermarket but you feel so good about yourself for being so healthy after shopping here. I obviously would not do my entire groceries here as that would burn a hole in my pocket though. 'Mrs Flannery's' is a must for anyone into natural health and organic foods who lives around the 'Taringa' area. You will not be disappointed by the range this place has to offer.

Sun & Earth Organics is a great place to start if you are in need of some healthy options and inspiration in your life. The store on Brunswick Street houses everything you could imagine in terms of healthy lifestyle and dietary choices. From dried fruits and fair trade coffee beans, to pour-your-own organic laundry liquid. Sun & Earth really does remind you of how many great, healthy alternatives there are. With the busy lifestyle I lead, I often get caught up eating on the run and not really making the best choices about my diet. I think I will incorporate Sun & Earth into my weekly grocery shopping routine to make the health kick habitual. Believe me, the produce in Sun & Earth is enough to make your mouth water as much as any burger shop walk-by. The mature-aged female pharmacist discusses extremely sensitive and confidential information about patient prescriptions openly and loudly in front of other customers, takes it upon herself to contact prescribing doctors without patient consent in order to discuss very clear dispensing guidelines provided by the prescribing doctor (keeping in mind she is NOT a doctor), and she incorrectly dispenses smaller amounts of prescription medication than the doctor has authorised, presumably as an act of spite for being called-out on her unprofessional behaviour. It's her job to do as the doctor says--not recklessly alter the prescription. This behaviour constitutes misconduct. Accordingly, I have contacted the pharmacy registration board for an investigation into this person. Also, there's another person who works for this pharmacy, a mature-aged woman named 'Megan'. 'Megan' is not a pharmacist or doctor, yet pretends to be. I have contacted the pharmacy a number of times to discuss prescriptions that my treating doctor emails and faxes to this pharmacy. On a number of occasions, 'Megan' has demanded to know what medications I am taking and has claimed to 'know exactly what that medication is'. She has also demanded to know exactly when medication is going to be picked-up, despite knowing that I suffer from severe chronic illness, and consequently, am relying on the goodwill of a close friend to collect them on my behalf--therefore, I cannot provide 'exact times'. This type of person could cause serious harm to someone who believes her to be in possession of skills and qualifications that she does not have in the event that they misconstrue her advice for that of a professional. Give this pharmacy a very wide berth if you value your own and your family's health.

I've loved açaí for years, having tried it in Rio long before the açaí bowl trend caught on in other parts of the world. The taste is just so nice, something like in between blueberry and chocolate, but this smoothie seemed really light on the açaí taste and really heavy on the raspberry and strawberry taste, which was a let down. It also seemed overpriced given I could easily have thrown the same ingredients into a blender for way cheaper. But my biggest gripe with it was all the seeds. Yeah, berry smoothies are bound to have seeds -- the raspberry ones especially are annoying because they're so tiny and they just clamp onto your molars like a needy ex-boyfriend. So I expected some seeds, but the amount of seeds in this smoothie was RIDICULOUS. I needed a spittoon like in the Wild West to spit all those puppies into. Made for a really unpleasant smoothie experience. (First world problems, I know.) On the plus side, they have their vegan menu options clearly marked. I'm also guessing their açaí bowls are way nicer than their smoothies, and if I ever went back I'd try a bowl instead, but right now I'm not too inspired to go back. Staff seemed bored and undertrained -- they made a couple of mistakes while I was here.

Now whether you believe this fruit is really one of those panaceas for everything that irks you (personally I do), let me tell you something - these bowls of fruity goodness are delicious! It's a pop up shop so don't expect any fancy decor but I will say the minimalist set up gave off a very clean and cozy feeling. When you walk in, you'll want to go straight to the back where you can hear the buzzing blenders. So as the store name suggests, this place is all about the berries. The menu has 2 main choices: bowls and smoothies. I haven't tried the smoothies yet but I reckon I will at some stage. The bowls consist of the following: a layer of acai + other fruit puree, granola, banana and strawberry slices topped with a sprinkling of flax seed. That's what they call the Original and the one I've liked the most. I've tried a couple of the others and they seemed to be variations on the same theme. I work out at the Jetts right across the street and a bowl of berry is the best award after coming off an early morning session. The cool tangy puree meshes beautifully with the sweet crunchiness of the granola. I usually get the large ($10) and it's more than enough for a filling hearty breakfast that (gasp!) is actually pretty healthy. The price however is one of the reasons I'm not here every day and probably the only negative I can think of. However, that being said, it's addictive enough that I have been going about 2-3 times each week! I've recommended this place to all of my coworkers and friends to try at least once. It's unique and as a longtime devour-er of acai berries, I'm very happy that there's now a shop that champions its cause!
