There is a butcher located right next door and a seafood market in the next shopping complex (only about 100m away) so you can dodge the supermarket altogether!

Fresh - The vine ripened tomatoes here make me crave bruschetta with their sweet smell and the bright red blush of their skins. Convenient - there's always parking here. It's next door to a bakery, deli and butchers so you can do half your weekly shop in this complex alone. Cheap - like all fruitgrocers, prices are a little cheaper here than at Woolworths or Coles. This is especially obvious during the summer months when you can buy cheap trays of mangoes and also year round with their avocadoes. While I wouldn't recommend driving across town purely for this greengrocer, residents of Eight Mile Plains, Sunnybank, Macgregor, Wishart and even Mount Gravatt should give this place a yelp.

As a family run business, the service reflects this. It's not too much trouble, as other Yelpers have mentioned, for the team to help you carry your shopping to the car. You get a choice of bag or box and there's a small section at the front of the store perfect for stocking up on slightly blemished produce for smoothies or juice. I most recently bought a bag of pineapples for $5 that have been well used in smoothies this week and even a chicken dish for dinner. There's also a small area for organic and gluten free flours, coconut oils, yoghurts, cheeses etc. All in all Charlie's is a one-stop shop and great for a weekly produce shop or for the one-off "I've run out of..." type of stop in. If you're not keen on driving to Everton Park, they also have online ordering with a flat $5 delivery.

You might ask why I would go this effort? Well, I'll tell you. At this "Self Serve Fruit Mart" the produce is fresher, the prices are lower and service is friendlier than any Coles/Woolworths experience I've had. Not only that, but the produce is all seasonal and chances are the farmer who grew it is benefitting much more from the stock sold. I am a HUGE believer in supporting local business, so if you're in, around or even ever in West End, I would highly recommend you pick up your weeks groceries from somewhere like Charlie & Liz's Self Serve Fruit Mart. Not only will you save money, but what you spend will be feeding the local economy and helping more locals out.

Whilst this is a nice little fruit and veg shop with temptingly displayed produce, I'd never do all my fruit and veg shopping here as it's too small and too expensive. I try to do a bulk shop on the weekend at either The Gabba Fruit Market or the Davies Park Markets, where you really get value for money, but if I forget something, I'd much rather pop into Charlie & Liz's than go to Coles. It's a handy little store, in the middle of Boundary Street, the produce is good and supporting small businesses is always good.

They always have pre bagged specials outside such as red and brown onions for $1.99 per kilo bag, and are usually the cheapest and best place to buy tomatoes. The owners make sure they buy what is in season, so you may find locally grown mini roma tomatoes, so sweet they could be in a fruit salad, or crunchy peas grown and picked outside of Brisbane. Free range eggs are also significantly cheaper and fresher than the supermarket brands. There is also a very good deli selection of both dry and fresh goods. Fridges groan with imported cheeses, meats and olives and there are some great dried deli items available that are usually only seen in specialist import shops. The best part of shopping at Ashgrove Fresh is the staff, it's a family run business and it shows. I'm greeted by name and have occasionally walked out with a free bunch of flowers (they're already open Sun, take them!). I'm pretty sure THAT has never happened in a chain supermarket...

There's a friendly face greeting you at the counter. It matters. It makes it a welcome place to shop, to stock up on fresh produce as you need it. Prices are pretty easy on the back pocket, too.

The outer walls of the store are lined with the artful display of fruit while the floor space is full of wooden platforms upon which rest loads of fresh produce. Darra is known for its Asian grocery stores, authentic Viet/Chinese restaurants, but this fresh food market in Darra has got to be one of the best here. It may look a bit run down from the outset, but definitely not compromised in terms of stock. The fruit are all good quality but they are not the most good looking. Some are oddly shaped, mismatched and with slight grazes, but still very tasty. In fact, there was a fruit picker who once told me that, big super market chains prefer to pick really traditionally good looking fruit, but it may not necessarily product the best taste. Whereas, small grocers like this are happy to sell on the odd looking ones with good rich flavour at a fraction of the cost. I would urge you all to give these little guys a chance, it's worth it. K & K Fresh Food Market don't just sell fresh fruit and veg produce, they also have an extensive range of Asian canned and packet goods inside the store. You will find a massive range in noodles from thin rice noodles to thick egg noodles, a variety of rice and packeted frozen meats. There is plenty of Asian cooking oil, sauces, seasonings, spices and more to be found here at considerably low prices to that in Woolies or Coles. If you are planning on making an Asian dish, I would highly recommend going to this ethnic grocer, K & K's, as opposed to a bit chain supermarket, so you can get the most authentic flavours at a fraction of the cost. I would also like to add, that this place is quite busy on weekends particularly on a Sunday where there is often a rush of people after mass investing in their weekly household goods.
