Twas the day before Christmas and I needed fresh, plump fruit!
Fruity Capers sits on the main floor level of Toowong Village. You can get there by bus or train, but there's a fun carpark, too. Think spiral staircase for your four wheeled zoom-a-mobile.
Ambience ***
My first impression of Fruity Capers is that its bursting at the seams. No really, it is! There are displays of fruit impending on the path which leads to the foodcourt; they need more space. Get lost, Donut King, they need an island appendage to spread out onto.
You can smell the fruit before you even hit this store which is a HUGE plus for me - you know everything is ripe and ready to go. It also helps if you're half-blind and need to follow your nose to the mountains of apricots, grapes and melons stacked out the front.
There are tasting plates of some of the fruits out front, but you can't start carrying what's going to be at least an armload until you get inside to get a basket. Hm. Not quite a smart choice there; I had to navigate my way between prams, restockers' trolleys, and hassled customers to the cashier to get me a basket and then got stink-eye from a customer who thought I was jumping the line! Eeeeek, just let me get back to the apricot mountain, I didn't mean it, I swear!
Products on offer ****
Whew, everything on offer here is ripe, juicy, plump, fresh, yum-yum-yum-I-could-sit-down-and-eat-it-right-here good! I was on fruit salad duty, and me being me and not knowing which fruits my eaterers like, had to get at least 10 different types. Plus presentation is everything, so I needed at least one colour each of the rainbow.
Keeping this in mind, the only thing I couldn't find there was honeydew. Given the awful offering Woolies had the other day of said fruit, I suspect they must be out of season or hard to get. I substituted with the other green fruit which doesn't go brown: kiwi fruit. Harder than I'd have liked, but given the timing, I knew half a day on the windowsill would push them into acceptable territory.
I forgot, just as I joined the cashier's queue, that I had also put my hand up for sauteed mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. D'oh! Back to the swarm and grabbed myself some very rich looking romas and cute as a button mushies.
Service *****
At this time of year, anywhere, I expect to see high schoolers earning some extra cash. If that's the case here, it looks like they've learned VERY quickly the layout and cashiers' roles. In fact, I'm more inclined to believe their staff are long termers by the way they know their products. I was smirking to myself that I'd nabbed the 2 for $6 mangoes at the 2 for $5 priced ones until the cashier quick as you could blink realised her booboo and fixed it up. I still smirked: good on her for the catch before I could get away with it.
All around me restockers were stacking more fruit and veg to keep up with the incoming crowds; but they weren't obtrusive, and most of the time when I looked up from my mission I could see blue shirts pointing in one direction or another to help the deadline junkies make their purchases.
Additional Notes
I'm not local enough to Toowong to come here and buy fruit and veg regularly, however on the occasions I am here for something Toowong-centric, I'll be adding a stop in to Fruity Capers.
Price-wise, they have lots of 2 for $# offers, but I'm not likely to buy two of anything knowing I won't get through it, it'd be wasted on me completely. read more
