    Biloxi Lighthouse, looking north
    Bruce K.

My hotel was only a few blocks from here, so I was here a couple of times. Sunrise and sunset, it's a beautiful lighthouse! I was in the nearby Visitor's Center where they show a video about the lighthouse and how it was restored after major damage from Hurricane Katrina. The locals really love this lighthouse. As does the rest of the State of Mississippi - it's on their license plates! The lighthouse does open for tours but closes early because it gets hot inside. If that's something that appeals to you, check it out. For me, just being outside was good enough. [Review 14119 overall, 1441 of 2020, number 26 in Mississippi.]

Lovely spot. The lighthouse seems well maintained. I did not go in. It is in the neutral ground between the welcome center and the parking for the beach. Use care when crossing the street.

Small but cute and historical lighthouse in middle of the 2 way road next to beach. Picture perfect But it closes around 5 so we couldn't go in.

I want to say they said that it's survived five hurricanes so that's pretty impressive. It's weird that it's in the middle of the main road through town but still worth checking out for a few minutes. I'm not sure if you can go inside but we just checked out the outside. It's not as large as the lighthouses I'm used to in Florida so I was a little surprised it wasn't taller. It's an icon of the city and worth checking out if you're nearby.

Nice setup, directly across the street from the lighthouse, visitors center & Biloxi Beach. This park has a playground, benches, picnic table, a large pavilion with electrical access, and a nature boardwalk with seating. I saw people biking, walking, riding skateboards. A lot of plaques with nature & historical info. You cannot beat the beach views, either.

Thank you Biloxi got staying committed to your history. It is worth a walk to take an up close look at the lighthouse and the nearby museum. The city has done so much to maintain the lighthouse for us landlocked folks to see what they really look like in person. It was a little scary getting up to it the day we went as traffic was heavy and you had to cross the road but it was worth the little game of frogger!

Biloxi Lighthouse in Mississippi. Bright blue skies, calm waters, but it rained 20 minutes ago, so no tours for the rest of the day!

Biloxi Lighthouse in Mississippi. Bright blue skies, calm waters, but it rained 20 minutes ago, so no tours for the rest of the day! Are you kidding me? "The grass is wet and the stairs are metal" is the reason given. We drove from Texas (2 states away, 8+ hours) to be here (and arrived 9:05 am - on time) and we get turned away! Here's an idea - Buy a door mat and have people wipe their feet! Four other families arrived and turned away as we were leaving. One of those families - a family of six - were from Kansas. Yup, I guess the lighthouse doesn't need the extra income or tourism. I hope never to visit Biloxi again.

I was surprised at it's location in the middle of the highway, maybe at some point it was on the shore side.

Tullis-Toledano House - Front of the Tullis-Toledano House Historical Marker, Biloxi

    Tullis-Toledano House

One of the most substantial of the early vacation houses on the Gulf Coast, the Tullis-Toledano House was built in 1856 for New Orleans native Christoval Sebastian Toledano (1789-1869) and his wife, Matilda Pradat Toledano. The estate, composed of a Creole-influenced Greek Revival house, detached kitchen, servants' quarters, and carriage house, was purchased by the Tullis family in 1939. Damaged during Hurricane Camille and later restored, the house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005." Online, there is more information. Christoval Sebastian Toledano was a sugar and cotton broker of Spanish descent from New Orleans. The home was a two and one-half story, five-bay structure built of red-clay bricks that were manufactured in a Biloxi brickyard. The upper floors were accessed by a semi-spiraled, wooden staircase. In 1969, the home sustained considerable damage from Hurricane Camille, and was sealed and vacated. In 1975, the Tullis family sold the house and property to the city of Biloxi. The city restored the house and used it for the next 30 years as a museum and community center. After weathering 150 years of storms from the Gulf, Tullis-Toledano Manor was completely destroyed during Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. A barge from Grand Casino Biloxi washed ashore during the hurricane and crushed the house. Nothing was left of Tullis-Toledano Manor except rubble. There are some insane pictures of the barge on http://www.playmiss.com/2006/index.html The house had been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The storm was the twelfth tropical cyclone, the fifth hurricane, and the third major hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record to make landfall in the contiguous United States. Battered by wind, rain and storm surge, some beachfront neighborhoods were completely leveled. Preliminary estimates by Mississippi officials calculated that 90% of the structures within half a mile of the coastline were completely destroyed. The pictures of the coastal casinos - block long buildings! - were picked up and basically launched at the coastline, destroying many 18th century homes and ancient trees. The Bay St. Louis-Pass Christian and the Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge were entirely destroyed. Katrina's surge was the most extensive, as well as the highest, in the documented history of the United States. That is documented here with a post showing the maximum height of the surge. The Memorial stands 12 feet tall, about the height of the water during Hurricane Katrina's storm surge at the Town Green. It lists the names of the 170 victims that perished during the storm.
