One very overworked female bartender, frozen bar pizza plus apps from the deep fryer (frozen pickles nom), cold beer on draft, and a pull tabs machine in the corner. This particular one gets props in a couple respects. First, great drafts -- I haven't seen Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter in a long long time. Second, they actually have their own house whiskey -- a California bourbon barrel selection from Savage & Cooke. And it's quite good! Third, the locals are pretty welcoming of a city slicker. I did get quizzed fairly extensively about my religious and political beliefs by one very close talking local, but at no point was she inappropriate or jerky, and when I said "hey, I need to pay attention to my kid", she chilled out and let me drink and play cards with my daughter. I can't say as I'm going to be up this way a lot (pretty much did what we wanted to do at the state parks), but if I were, I'd hit this lounge again, it's the best and most reliable food and drink option in a 5 mile radius. (Their competitors in Beaver Bay are also pretty great, so it's a hard call to make.)

I get they are doing their job to id but let me set my stuff down before you hound me for an ID. I'm 35 years old as well, may not look like it so I get it. Today, I was rushed through by the manager working and I know he was because he denied my Fiancé last year alcohol when he had a valid ID and threatened to call the police on him. He is almost 40 years old, so I asked what he did there. This man is extremely unprofessional and needs to treat every customer equally. I do not want to be disrespected when I simply go to buy a product at this store. I will never be back to this establishment and have told many about my experiences here in the past years. I'll pay more money to get my things at a place where the cashiers are actually respectful to their customers.

Anyway, I came in looking for empty boxes the other day, as we were about to start packing up my recently-deceased mother-in-law's place. I walked up to the first employee I saw, a little hipster-type fella with a teenager's beard and what I'm sure were some very meaningful arm tattoos. I didn't catch his name, so let's call him "Chad". I asked Chad if I could get some boxes for the move. He sighed, did a full-body eye-roll, gestured to a ceiling-high stack of boxes near the exit, and said "Yeah, but they're for PAYING customers, only." So, whatever. Not going to argue with Chad over wine boxes, so I bought a couple of beers, and headed over to the tower of boxes. Chad then says "We ask that you limit yourself to THREE boxes, sir." So, yeah, screw Chad, screw Chad's wispy-ass beard, and screw anywhere that hires hipster jackasses like Chad. I've been getting boxes for moving from liquor stores for decades, and until Chad, I'd never once been asked to pay for removing what is, essentially, garbage. Today, I went to Super 1 in West Duluth, and they were not only helpful and cool, but they let us have all the boxes we needed. Yanno, because they're EMPTY BOXES. I didn't even need any beer, but I bought some, anyway.
