Took a ride to fort Sumner to see Billy the kids grave. After escaping Lincoln County Billy headed to Fort Sumner. Pat garret had got word he was there and headed out. Pat and two others are at Pete maxwell's house two deputies are on the porch and Pat is inside when Billy seeing two men on the porch backs in the door asking Pete in Spanish "who is it". The room is dark and Pat is sitting at the foot of the bed and had just asked Pete if he had seen Billy when he backs in the door. Pat recognizing his voice fires two shots first one striking Billy in the chest second hitting the wall. Billy falls dead. Some say it wasn't him.Then enters the story of brushy Bill Robert's who claimed to be Billy the kid who is buried in Hico Texas. A great museum with artifacts as well as a great gift shop. Definitely worth the stop! read more

Lots of history, I can see where the movie makers did their research. Fort Sumner was where the Navajo nation had the long walk lots of history in the railroad boss Maxwell so much history. read more

This museum is massive!! Absolutely jam packed with historical items from both the life and times of Billy the kid and the history of the West itself! Could spend hours pouring over every inch and still not fully appreciate everything this place has to offer! 100% worth the easy 1 hr drive from Clovis! $8 per person, kids are free, military discount is $7. As a fan of American history I was excited to see this historic site located near Fort Sumner along the Picos River you can imagine the Westerns and cowboy stories of all kinds, the cemetery is small and Billy the Kid was fenced in to keep thieves from stealing the headstone and or body and yes that has happened to Billy, just remember that the museum is closed on Monday read more

First off, the tall owner/worker was very rude and sarcastic as soon as we got there. Then charged us almost triple for something that was determined to be stocked wrong. His solution was to make my 5 year old daughter settle for less and not change it when the mistake was discovered. This was after having spent almost $50 in the gift shop already and $50 for the museum. The museum was really neat. Really shouldn't be called the Billy the Kid Museum though. It has some very interesting things about him contained to one room. The rest of it was interesting unique things that don't have anything to do with him. read more

3.5 stars Now, I had stopped by Billy's grave a few years back, but had not been to the museum. It was only $5 to get in and not crowded at all. There was a ton of old photos (some including Billy), a short film about his life, and even the rifle of Billy the Kid himself in one hall. There was an area if you follow the museum around to the back with old cars, wagons, equipment, and a preserved two-bodied calf. There was one area with a bunch of donated items that I wasn't quite sure how those fit in with the museum. I recognized the name and decided to take photos. I did not have time to go into the museum because I had a reservation to keep. Fort Sumner is a very small town in northern New Mexico. The fact that it is so small made me have reservations about visiting this museum, but now I am so glad I did. Indeed it is a little hokey in areas, but I didn't mind. It made me appreciate the old West more. There is a gift shop when you first walk in. You buy tickets from the friendly museum owners, an older couple. Aside from it being mainly about Billy the Kid, there are many historical artifacts throughout this museum including his rifle and a plethora of other guns. There are even some old cars and trucks in the back. A replica of his grave can be found toward the end of the maze-like tour. Of course there were several prints, paintings, and sculptures based on that famous photo of the Kid to remind you how much of a looker he was. After I completed my self-guided tour, I decided to follow some signs to yet another museum/gift shop... or at least I think they have a gift shop. When I arrived, the Old Fort Sumner Museum was closed. BUT... nearby is the grave site of Billy the Kid and one of his "pals" (riding partners... or rather, "members of his gang") and others. It was free, of course. I know there was a lot of controversy surrounding the real remains of the Kid (vandalism is still an issue apparently to this day), but at least I can say I saw the "resting place" of one of the most famous outlaws in American history. I find it ironic that if it is the real Billy the Kid gravesite that he is "behind bars." I also hope to visit the Bosque Redondo Memorial located inside (if I understood this correctly) the Fort Sumner State Monument park... which, of course, was also closed when I visited. Overall, the Billy the Kid Museum was worth visiting because it was a change of pace... a much slower pace, yet, filled with all the drama of his whereabouts and the mystique of the gunman. Museum and gift shop are easily accessible off the high way. It sits on a Main Street in town and has a good sized parking lot for visitors. Inside the museum is to the right. It's 5$ to tour. To the left when you enter is a gift shop. There is some Billy the Kid items but it is majority SW themed items, NM items, and cowboy and Indian themed items. There is quite a variety of gifts and souvenirs for all ages and budgets. Some of the items have been on the shelves a while giving a dated feel to the shop that probably needs to be removed and replaced but there is plenty enough that is more recent. There wasn't really consistency in pricing some things were priced reasonably but then some items seemed over priced for what it was. I purchased some stickers and a Meat Branding iron of my initial, now every time I have steak or grilled chicken I have a little bit of Billy the Kid with me. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable of the museum. read more

We stopped by this museum after visiting Fort Sumner and Billy the Kid's grave. Pros: Admission was $5. The place is actually quite large and includes a lot more than just Billy the Kid artifacts. The first part of the museum is definitely dedicated to Billy. There's many artifacts relating to his time period and tons of news clippings about him, especially those after he was long dead (tomb interment court hearings and 'is this a new photo of the kid?!'). There's artifacts and paintings related to those that the Kid killed and even a little room showing a film about the Kid's life. The museum also showcases Billy's rifle. The gift shop was quite large and contained items on Billy but also the greater southwest region. Cons: I had mixed feelings about this place. The term museum is used loosely in my opinion. It had more of a feel of a collector's barn. I'm all for private collections being opened to the public, but its when objects seem to be obtained through illegal or unethical means that I become unhappy. For example, some cases said "found" at xyz location. Perhaps they were obtained with the property owners permission, but I've come to find that often "found" is a term that might also mean "stolen". There were also numerous Native American objects that were sitting in dusty cases with not description. One of the cases containing many pots even said "can you help us identify these?". As someone who studies the pottery I knew it was from Chihuahua, Mexico and these are often (90%) of the time exported illegally. Legality aside, I just wish the Native American artifacts were given more dignity or weren't included at all. It started to look more like an antique shop or someone's old dusty shed. That's where they lost me. All in all, this is a fun stop if you are interested in learning about the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid, but take the information presented to you with a grain of salt. Visit other local areas for more (& more reliable) information on Billy the Kid if you are craving more! (i.e. Lincoln, NM or Fort Sumner). read more

Great family run museum and gift shop. The man working there was friendly and informative as soon as we arrived.

If you like the west and western history, you will LOVE this place! My whole family absolutely loved this museum! It is much larger then it appears from the road - it just goes on and on! It is extremely well priced too. This museum covers regional history with exhibits of everything from fire arms to household goods, farm equipment to automobile evolution - and all of it done well! There is a little room to view a Billy the Kid documentary. There are multiple photo opps for you and your little buckaroos including a wagon, stage coaches, Billy the Kids grave replica and old west jail cell. There is a gift shop with regional items as well as typical tourist souvenirs like magnets and key chains - but the best things in the gift shop are the old time moving picture machines! Put your coin in and pull the lever while looking into the viewing goggle type thing. The couple who owns and runs the place are really neat to chat with! The gentleman seemed to enjoy telling my children about various things in the museum and is himself a really interesting character! He told us he worked as a telegraph operator for the railroad and many of this fathers items are in the museum. You will not be disappointed! read more

Billy the kid museum is totally worth the stop in Fort Sumner. There's a lot to see here not all of it is Billy the Kid related but most of it is. It's a wide breath of history with all of the guns, artwork, and memorabilia from yesteryear. If you have an extra 20 minutes while you're driving through Fort Sumner I think it's worth the stop to see a bit of history. read more

This is quite the assortment of random objects, some more connected to Billy the Kid than others. You can wander through rooms, some with artifacts like portraits of Billy and firearms that may have belonged to those close to him-- then find your way into others that have old china, baby dolls, license plates, and vehicles, among other things. I was there about fifteen years ago. The chaps they had on display and stated were Billy The Kid's could not have been his as the saddlery mark on the chaps, Al Furstnow, is the mark of a saddlery that did not exist until twenty five years after Billy The Kid's death. When one piece is wrong, the rest of the display is suspect. Sad. read more

This was money well spent. This is a big museum. if you really took the time and looked at things in this museum then it would easily take you all day. Now for the bad news... This is a Billy the Kid museum and they certainly have a lot of history about Billy the Kid including some items, but this museum is way to eclectic. There is also so much that isn't about Billy the Kid. By the end of the museum tour I forgot I was there to learn about Billy the Kid. Not that this is bad, but it did take away from the experience a little. If you are in Fort Sumner then this museum is a must! read more

If you're a fan, this is the place to go. Lots of original, real stuff about Billy the Kid. In addition to the Billy the Kid paraphernalia, there is a winding maze of antiques. If you go on a quiet day like I did and wander off by yourself like I did, you can really get spooked. $4 or so, to get in, plus you'll wanna buy a few postcards and/or stickers. Set us back $12 total, not too bad. It's not a big, swishy place. It's small, locally run, perhaps even hokey, I like that though, so I give it 5 stars. So there. read more

Great spot to stop and rest your legs....and learn! We stopped here on the way back home from Santa Fe. The place has some great items from Billy the Kid and that era. The owner, was extremely knowledgable and friendly. From what I can tell this place is owned by this one gentleman, it's a shame the state of New Mexico doesn't put more money into this place as it is already extremely interesting and fun. At our son's insistence, we added a whole additional day to our vacation just so we could visit this museum. He was right! We spent way over one hour walking through the amazing collections, and still felt like we were rushing through! The folks who run this place are delightful. I kept remarking that I couldn't believe so many artifacts could be collected and assembled ( and still existed!) in one place. If you are a history buff, are fascinated by the tools, implements, and life-style of our early pioneers, or enjoy classic cars--you won't be disappointed!
