Where is notorious outlaw Billy the Kid buried, you ask? It seems at Fort Sumner's old military cemetery, between his two fallen companions. Address is convenient to remember -- 3501 Billy the Kid Road, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. It's a good stretch-your-legs stop. Didn't take long for us to tour this neatly kept little cemetery. Other than some cars driving by, the area was quiet and pleasant. Thank goodness there are historical markers to help explain things, as their visitor centre seems permanently closed. No bathrooms available.

We took a little side trip on our travel plans to go see the grave of Billy the Kid. I had always been interested in his story as well of the mysteries surrounding his death. We saw the cemetery where he and some of his gang are buried, as well as the site on the old Fort Sumner location where he was allegedly killed. What really blew us away is the Bosque Redondo Memorial, which is also located on Fort Sumner. Here you can learn about the history of Bosque Redondo, which was a concentration camp for Native Americans during the late 1800s. For five years, thousands of people from the Mescalero Apache and Navajo cultures were imprisoned here under abhorrent conditions. Thousands died due to malnutrition and mistreatment by their jailers. The Bosque Redondo Memorial serves as a reminder of a dark chapter in American history, one that still haunts the descendants of those who endured it.

4.5 stars I came here about two years ago for the first time, then about two weeks ago. It doesn't look like much from the road and easy to pass by, but I once had a historical crush on Billy the Kid (bad boys, amiright?). But, this is actually cool to see and worth a stop. There's a sign explaining how Billy's body had been stolen a few times and how they have to keep it behind the fence. I guess I had been more interested in seeing Billy and friend's graves the last time that I hadn't noticed the grave of Pete Maxwell, where Billy was killed... The visitor's center has long been closed. 2021 #43 (Woohoo! This is my 1000th Yelp review!)

Being married to a history major, has me always looking for cool things to see. Well this did not disappoint. Now there is talk the Billy the Kid is not buried here that he is buried in Hico Texas, however this is a cool place to see, and really a great place to get out and stretch after a long drive.

Fort Sumner, New Mexico Timestamp: Sept 2020. Access/Roads: Paved. Civilized. Parking: Private Lot. Costs: Free. Hours: 24/7. Terrain/Weather: Has Four Seasons. Handicap: Handicap friendly. Located adjacent to Fort Sumner's Chamber of Commerce and at times can be accessible to the Fort Sumner Historic Site which is the town's main site. Distance: Appx 950 miles (1,500 KM) from Los Angeles, California. North of Site: Denver, Colorado @ 500 miles (800KM). South of Site: Roswell, New Mexico @ 90 miles (145 KM). East of Site: Amarillo, Texas @ 165 miles (270 km). West of Site: Albuquerque, New Mexico @ 240 miles (385 KM) Nearby Attractions: DT Fort Sumner has many antique/tourist shops and a bunch of bars w/ live music type of things. Amarillo has Cadillac Ranch & Big texan steakhouse. Santa Rosa has a Route 66 museum. Roswell has UFO themed related junk & access to Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands. Fort Sumner is the official gravesite for William Bonney or Henry McCarty & is famously known as Billy the Kid. A wild west figure that have been glorified & idolized in pop culture and the overall strange mythology that comes from the Wild West Days. Billy the Kid is a legendary gunslinger along the same breath as Doc Holliday. I say this is the "official" site because... Well, it the grave itself might not have the body underneath it. There is a tale of a man who died in Hico, Texas named Ollie "Brushy Bill" Roberts who claimed to be Billy the Kid and died as an old man as opposed to age 21-ish by Deputy Pat Garret in Fort Sumner. The story of Brushy Bill is available here (https://goo.gl/maps/3F7eP5SpVhiVANA69). The tale or conspiracy between Billy the Kid is more extensive than my synopsis and quite a fascinating tale. The controversy can be laid to rest easily by digging up the grave & doing some testing, but, one of these small towns loses a main tourist attraction. Losing this Billy the Kid allurement will make Fort Sumner, New Mexico & Hico, Texas as another dot on the map except for idiots like myself. There are funny rumors that the bars around Billy the Kid's gravesite was added because wisecracks would dig up the grave, damage the cement and all that. We don't want these type of antics at a cemetary. I find this untrue because the replicated jail cell on top of this grave can be easily removed with some hand tools. The gesture is a longing symbol to show Billy the Kid will spend his afterlife in jail since he was on the run and wanted for many many crimes including murder. Had to stop to get a little sight seeing and history in during my road trip. The area is very well easy to get to, just be mindful of the speed limit. A nice officer let me go with just a warning. So advice to be mindful of that. There's quite a few things to see in this general area so if you're traveling thru this would be a nice break in travel to stretch your legs and see some neat things.

We hiked across Pauls Lake, one of the salty and pretty much entirely dry (at this point) playa lakes. There are 3 main playa lakes, Goose, White, and Pauls. Bring binoculars. I also saw some Western Meadowlarks, a large raptor of some kind (about 2 feet long), American Kestrels, and prairie dogs. You can hike on pretty much the entire preserve, but there is cactus and rattlesnakes, although we didn't see any snakes. They have a picnic and tent camping area, and there are no fees to get into the park. They have a sign-in point at the headquarters, but there weren't any people there. There are chemical toilets at the picnic area and near Pauls Lake, which is a little farther down the highway. There also was another scenic overlook/picnic area on the very end of the preserve, which you can enter off the highway. Scattered around the property are signs that talk about points of interest with visitors. Overall I enjoyed the wild and lonely scenery but didn't see too much wildlife. Maybe because it was kind of cold out. The premises appeared well cared-for by the refuge staff, we saw them repairing a bridge on the picnic area trail. There also were various burned areas of grass which they do to remove undesirable plants and to maintain the prairie ecosystem. If you visit I recommend sturdy shoes, binoculars, a picnic lunch (there are no nearby eateries), and to print a map beforehand. There was one available online but I didn't see any in the lobby area.
