This place is amazing!!! So many of the exhibits were found in Quay County which Tucumcari is in. The fossils and waxed casts are from 250 million years ago.

Wonderful little museum in a town that produces a lot of dino bones from their soil. Wonderful and put together 80% by the locals it's one of the best dino museums I've been to. Always will love stopping here.

We were driving through and had a dinosaur-lover in the car, so we HAD to stop. So glad we did! This is definitely a smaller museum, but there was quite a bit on display, and there was an interactive section with an area to stamp footprints in sand, an "excavation site," a table to do some rubbings, and a topographical projector with sand where you can see how lakes and mountains form. (Probably a better name for that setup! Haha!) The staff were all super kind and welcoming. Not too busy, easy to pop into a navigation system to locate.

This place is the best! So many hands-on things for kids to see and do! We loved it! Educational and clean. The price was right too. We were traveling through and saw the sign, it was a much needed quick break with fun for everyone! It takes 30-45 minutes to see everything. My kids loved the fossil digging especially. We will stop here again!

I visited as a young girl and recently had the chance to take my little girl on our way back home to Arizona. Is it huge? No. But it makes for a nice little stop to stretch your legs and the kids love it. Definitely some cool artifacts and is a nice little treat in Tucumcari. There aren't giant model dinos inside but still worth a look.

This museum is indeed a hidden gem, which I found back in '09. So many great exhibits, each with a wealth of information. Staff are incredibly friendly and eager to share their knowledge. A must stop on any road trip travelled on I-40.

The staff here were so friendly! The place was clean, quiet, and they let you take pictures and touch some of the exhibits. There is an interactive area for kids, and a great learning experience for adults as well. Also very good pricing!

If you love western U.S. history, this is the place to visit. There is no way anyone could study…read moreeverything in the museum in a day. There is a small library, pages of information to read and tons of historical relics. There are old covered wagons, a cool caboose and farm equipment. There is a rock and bone room that is quite interesting. There are displays of old western wear, quilts, old postcards, photos, and a gabillion other things. If you're traveling I-40 west through Tucumcari, I highly recommend stopping to look at the cool architecture, the museum and the town's 1960's feel.

I guess I can see where Jae K. (review from 07.02.2012) would say that the Tucumcari Historical…read moreMuseum is more like a collection of antiques. Or as AI put it - that "giant attic feel." Lol. The museum was closed when I stopped by on Sunday, August 2, 2026, yet, there was still plenty to see outside such as a caboose firehouse, a windmill, a New Mexico Air Guard jet, and a World War II-era U.S. 90 mm M1 (or M1A1/M2) anti-aircraft gun. Whew! Artifacts inside range from maps and photos to vintage everyday artifacts. This museum is near another Tucumcari gem known as the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum and Natural Sciences Laboratory. Im the past, The building later served as an army corps office, a local hospital, and a World War II glider pilot training school before becoming a museum in 1969 Perhaps someday I will be here on a Tuesday through Saturday and it will be open. Stepping into the Don Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo is like entering a wonderland of…read morescience--complete with roaring dinosaurs, swirling galaxies, and lasers that make you say, "Whoa, did that just happen?" The place buzzes with curiosity from the moment you walk in. I kicked things off in the Sun, Earth & Universe gallery, pressing buttons to trigger solar flares and playing with real-time space weather--instant brain tickles that felt both geeky and awesome . Then I zipped over to the Outdoor Science Park, where a life-size T‑Rex and Triceratops loomed over a fossil dig pit. Kids were scooping up "bones" while I dodged tennis balls flying from a launcher--science meets playground shenanigans . Later, I curled up in the cozy Treehouse Reading Nook, surrounded by bird chirps from the aviary above--a peaceful contrast to the chaos of color bombs and bouncing probes . The highlight, though? The Space Theater, a full‑dome planetarium that launched me from Earth to black holes in minutes--complete with dramatic music and enough stars to rival my ex's eyes . It's clear DHDC is more than a kids' museum--it's a playground for inquisitive minds of all ages. Traveling exhibits keep things fresh, and a recent "Beyond: Unity in Community" display even won a national award for celebrating Afghan culture . Educational programs, planetarium shows, story times, and even sci‑fi-style "KABOOM!" demos fill the calendar . By the end of my visit, my cheeks hurt from smiling, my head buzzed with fun facts, and I momentarily considered launching myself into orbit. Instead, I left with a grin, a handful of newfound cosmic trivia, and a plan to bring all my friends next time. Bottom line: Don Harrington Discovery Center is science with soul--equal parts spectacle and insight. Whether you're a kid, a curious adult, or just someone who likes lasers and dinosaurs (who doesn't?), this place throws the perfect brain party.
