Bill's is a local favorite. It has been around since 1960 (60 years!), starting as a downtown Dayton shop when the city was peaking post-war. There used to be other outlets in the Dayton area before Bill's moved consecutively to two different places close to the main intersection of Centerville. One of these is their current location, where the shop has apparently been since 1974. And since then it's been the one and only location for Bill's. Growing up in the northern suburbs and attending undergrad at UD until 1983, Bill's would not have been in my circle of normal travel when I lived in the Dayton area. They closed their northside shops before I could drive. But after my mother moved south of town in her later years, and especially after my daughter moved to the Centerville region for graduate school four years ago, Bill's has been on the radar. Reading their website, they essentially attribute their success to being family- and community-oriented. They're local, and they present themselves and act in a manner that you'd expect from your favorite local spot for sweet treats and a coffee. And I love the story about how they went out of their way to make arrangements for the night shift guys at NCR to have their donuts and coffee, because my father was one of those NCR guys (too bad we didn't live south of town, or he might have been one of those stopping at Bill's on his way to work). I think at the heart of it, for all of the conveniences of the modern world, people still like that place, as per the Cheers theme song, where everybody knows your name; where in some ways, you step back in time into that safe, comfortable place, even if a lot of what is conjured is idyllic and imagined. Whether people consciously know it or not, having such places taken away may be at the top of the list of what we miss with COVID. Even with places like Bill's being fully open for business, 6-foot spacing and wearing masks just seems to be incompatible with the spirit behind what we enjoy so much about a spot like this that we consider an extension of home. But I do think Bill's is just that sort of establishment that embodies community, because that vibe is palpable whether it's your first time coming in or your hundredth visit. They're on their second generation of family ownership, and it strikes me that they're still in business because they love the fact that they are who they are. The place is cozy, the staff is service-oriented and they have the sort of comfort fare that just seems consistent with the fact that a visit to Bill's is a treat. My daughter grew to love her occasional stops at Bill's for a donut or other baked goody, or perhaps for just a cup of one of their flavored coffees (like the Michigan Blueberry coffee I had recently). Their donuts are not the most exotic offerings I've ever seen, such as the ones I might get at Stan's in Chicago or Sweetwater's in Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, but they feel like ones that your neighbor might put out for a snack when you come over for a Sunday afternoon visit. Because that's what you're doing when you come in...you're visiting your neighbor. And I think that makes them perhaps taste a little bit better. But don't get me wrong...these donuts are still good even without that little emotional taste enhancement. And the fact that they also offer things like cinnamon muffins with cream cheese frosting (my wife's favorite), buckeyes, fritters and cookies makes it all the more appealing. The prices at Bill's are also quite fair, sticking with the concept of being neighborhood friendly. On our last visit, we took away half a dozen donuts, a cinnamon muffin with cream cheese frosting, a latte and a large coffee for $10. For the treat that it was, the price was more than reasonable. I only regret that we did not have the time to enjoy them in the shop. If you're in the area, make a stop. You won't regret that you made the effort. There's plenty of parking so it's truly easy in/easy out if you don't have a lot of time. read more

I haven't been made to feel so uncomfortable in a business like I have tonight. I was not greeted and had every employee stare at me while I stood waiting for someone to help me. I've worked in the food industry before and never have I just stared at someone without a simple hello or form of acknowledgement. I can only assume that it has to do with the fact that I'm a native individual walking into a primarily white establishment. Whenever I go on a road trip, I seek out new donut shops to try. Thus, while driving from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis, I took a 45 minute detour to south Dayton to visit Bill's Donut Shop. I am happy to say that the detour was well worth it. Bill's is an old-fashioned donut and coffee shop open 24/7. I arrived around 10 p.m. on a Friday night, and there was a line, but it moved relatively quickly. To me, a line at a bakery is a good sign. The line at Bill's just lets you drink in the scenery a little longer- I'm presuming this place hasn't changed all that much in the last few decades. Once I reached the front of the line, a friendly fellow was more than willing to help me pick out two dozen donuts. They have an incredible variety, particularly of cake donuts, and I tried a lot of them. The strongest to me were: -Frosted cake donut with sprinkles (great frosting, crunchy exterior) -Cream filled donuts (frosted and without frosting) - their frosting has a smooth consistency with the right amount of sweetness -Sour creme (basically a glazed cake donut) -Applesauce donut - not usually my thing, but a cake donut with a nice apple flavor -Cake sticks - without a doubt, these were the best donuts I tried. Sweet glazed cake donut sticks with a crunch, perfect for dipping in coffee. I bought two in my initial two dozen and then went and bought ten more. The best part? They're two for a dollar. The next time I visit, I'm just going to buy all the cake donut sticks they have. Yeah, ALL OF THEM. These donuts were well-executed, but not worth going out of your way for: -Cinnamon sugar (not crunchy enough for me) -Apple fritter (a little light on the apple pieces) -Glazed twist donut These donuts are ridiculously cheap: $7.90 for a regular dozen, or $8.20 for a premium dozen. I have no idea why they don't charge more for such wonderful donuts (Dunkin' Donuts costs more!), but I didn't complain. Their coffee could be better, but the donuts, the friendly service, and the hours are the real attraction here. If you are passing through the area and enjoy old-fashioned donuts, Bill's is definitely worth a stop. Don't forget- try the cake donut sticks, they are fantastic! read more

I am SO SAD. I never write restaurant reviews because I generally believe the old adage of "if you have nothing nice to say..." but I hope ownership will take something away from this. For years we've been driving up from Cincinnati to hike the Dayton Metroparks and stopping by Bill's for a sour cream donut. This is our first visit since new ownership - they're not the same! The sour cream donuts are too soft now and therefore oily. They're no longer crisp on the outside with a fluffy interior. I don't know what they did but they went from the best donuts in the US to just another inferior donut shop. Nothing gold can stay. read more

Bills doughnuts are surprisingly good! I'm a doughnut snob so no donut shop compares to Gourmet Glazed Doughnuts in Charleston, SC. However, these come in as a good go to place for the time being as I cannot fly myself to Charleston every week. When I get to the front of line i noticed a bit of an attitude from this young lady behind the counter. Noooo problem because my order will be quick and I will be on my merry way.... I ordered a combination of 8 donuts & muffins.. Please tell me WHY this young lady put my items in a bag and not a box??? When I arrived at my destination, the frosting from the red velvet donuts was all over the rest of my order. ( muffins & glaze donuts) if it was necessary to use a bag why not use wax paper to separate the items? She didn't bother. This is hands down probably the best donut shop around. I have literally waited in lines going outside the shop many times. When I lived in Ohio this was a Weekend must, now each time we go back for a visit we beg family to make this a part of the trip. The donuts are so fresh and taste amazing. They put other donut shops to shame. My husbands favorite is the Nut Covered Persian and I love the Boston Cream and chocolate cake, but honestly ANY donut you get is great. My husband recently had a weekend back in Ohio and I begged him to bring me back a Bills donut, they are that good! He made it happen and I just finished enjoying it. (They traveled well!) Bill's ended up on my "must visit" list, probably some time ago, probably from a list of "the best donut shop in every state". I would totally believe this is the best donut shop in Ohio, mind you, but I'm a bit spoiled by New England and the NJ/NYC area. I will say that Bill's is excellent, has an expansive selection. The apple fritter featured actual apple pieces, which is more than most places manage to do. The apple spice donuts, however, were really just spice and not apple, more of a standard fare. I definitely got a third donut for variety but it escapes me - was it a nut donut? But while it was far better than any gas station or chain donut you will find, and I definitely do not want to underplay how true that is, Bill's isn't in my top 5 donutteries and hasn't quite earned that 5th star. Unfortunately, because from service to selection this is a home run otherwise and the number of 5 star reviews from all comers tells you as much. TL;dr: Go here. You'll like it. My husband & I have loved coming to Bill's Donut Shop for years. We especially love the Cranberry Nut Muffins & buy several to take home when we are there. The last 2 times we were there we were disappointed in the muffins. It seems they changed the recipe and are using small chips of cranberries instead of whole cranberries that have been used in the past. The orange rind added some flavor but was not a replacement for the whole cranberries. I am disappointed with this change. Has anyone else noticed this? How do you feel about it? We hope this is not a change made by the new ownership. If so, we fear that recipes for other donuts may be changed also. read more

Bill's donut is a great, local 24/7 donut shop. The store gives old school vibes (80s) that is really cute. They have a great selection of donuts ranging from classic yeast donuts to fun cake donuts. They are more of a classic donut store, so you will not find the "gourmet artisanal" donuts, but there's something really special about going to a homey donut shop. Customer service was great. We really enjoyed our experience at Bill's. They're also a great local business that seems to do a lot of serve the local community as much as they can--definitely an added bonus in my eyes. read more

My husband likes their honey wheat donuts. I don't like donuts, but I have enjoyed their apple turnovers, custard, and muffins. Unfortunately, twice, the cream cheese carrot muffins were not completely baked all the way through, which was icky. I love coming to Bill's Donut Shop whenever I need a donut fix! They have been featured on many news articles as one of the best donut shops in the country. Parking: This is on Main St in Centerville so I was worried about tight parking, but there was a large lot beside and behind the store. Price: I was floored at how low the prices were! People rave about how good these donuts are so I thought the price would be $12-15 per dozen.
