Like most of the other local bike shops, these guys have great customer service. They'll take the time to answer your questions and will do minor tune ups like oiling the chain for free. I visited the shop to look for a new helmet for my commuter bike. I explained that I've been using the same helmet for my road & commuter bikes, and was interested in something "cuter" for my rides around town. When the sales associate heard this, he LAUGHED at me. I just stared at him, since it was an actual question, and he mumbled and then pointed to their stock of white & yellow racing-style helmets, explaining that those colors are easier for cars to see (no sh%t, dude). A few minutes later, my husband walked in and asked a question about his road bike- they answered him without any hesitation. Commuter-style helmets are not cutting edge stuff (Bern, Pryme, Giro, Nutcase, etc), but I wouldn't have cared that they didn't stock that type of merchandise if the employee had treated me differently. Instead, I was looked down on for asking a simple question. Male or female, we all care about what our bikes look like. I am not any less of a cyclist for wanting a helmet that I think is attractive, nor does being a female who says the word "cute" mean that I'm stupid and can be laughed at. This type of attitude is what keeps people from riding and I'm disappointed to see it in a "bike town" like Bloomington. I typically like to support local stores, but I went home and shopped on Amazon that night. read more

Best Bike Shop in Bloomington! And that is saying a lot as Bloomington is a bike-centric town! They have the most knowledgeable and helpful staff and I have no idea why anybody would go anywhere else. If they don't have it they can order it. We took my dad there for a new bike (he had been riding around an old, waaaay heavy bike around the neighborhood and had not been on a 'real' bike before). The staff took their time with him, listened to what his needs were, and we ended up walking away with a bike that day! The B-Line Trail is located at the back of the store so there is plenty of space to try out the new bikes. This is the place to go for both pros and novice bike people. read more

I visited Bikesmiths to buy my teenage daughter a road bike. I'd bought my other daughter's hybrids in the past few years and was happy with both the bikes and the courteous service. We had no experience with road bikes (to the point that I had to ask how to shift the gears!) but the staff member was very patient, explained the difference between the models of bikes and went over the operation of the bike at length. He put the bike on the rack and explained the mechanics and use of the gears as well. We were very pleased with the non-condescending attitude the shop had to a pair of novices and the great advice we received. We were in Bloomington for the weekend (my husband and I), and I should add we both have really cheap bikes that most bike stores would probably laugh at. Bikesmiths does not usually do repairs on a Friday, but since we had planned on biking all around town, they fixed up my husband's bike in a few hours at a very reasonable price. We stopped in a second time to buy a bike lock. Then, we couldn't get air in my tire at the pump, and they took care of that for free. These guys were so nice and approachable. No matter where I am in Bloomington, I always go to this bike shop. here's why. I bought a lock years ago. It had a "lifetime warranty." I went to the bike shop near my office and they asked me if I bought it there. I couldn't remember. They looked me up but didn't find the lock on my account. The guy behind the counter also said that they had recently upgraded their computer system, so it only went back five years. if I bought it before that, I was out of luck; it wouldn't show anyway. And besides, I had owned the lock for long enough. Or so he said. So much for a "lifetime" warranty. Undeterred, I walked to Bikesmiths. I showed them the lock. They didn't even asked me where I bought it. They could see they sold the same lock, so they took it and gave me a new one, no questions asked. That did it for me. Another time, I came with a flat tire and told them that it had happened numerous times in the last few months. They changed it and didn't even charge me for labor. This is a terrific store. I had a good experience going here to get my brakes tightened. I don't know very much about biking, but have so far been to three different bike shops in Bloomington (regarding various problems with my bike), and I had the best experience here. The staff was down-to-earth and the person who helped me diagnosed my bike issues very clearly. I appreciate that they recognize that bikers (and bikes) come in all shapes and styles, and not everyone is a "serious" biker training for the next tour-de-france. dmittedly, I am riding a bicycle that belonged to my father when he was in college. You can imagine the amount of work that it would need to get back on the road and running smoothly. I had done a lot of the repairs and upgrades myself, but needed my brakes redone and did not have the skills to do this. So, on a friend's recommendation I went to the Bikesmiths. I was expecting to pay a lot for the parts and repairs (breaks, reflectors, bottle holder, etc.). 3 days later they call and it was under $50 for all parts and repairs! I was exstatic. Bikesmiths is my favorite Bloomington bike shop. Staff is really helpful and friendly. They always ask if I need help finding anything when I walk in the door and never make me feel like an idiot. You might think that in such a small space you won't need help finding things but you will because there is so much crammed in here. Staff has helped me understand how to fix some simple things and chose bike chain grease. I recently bought a new bike here, and I have to say that the buying experience was great. I am new to Bloomington and was looking for a way to get to and from school. I stopped by one day to survey the options and the employee I spoke to was very helpful in helping me find the right bike for me, but never pressured me to buy anything. I ended up coming back the next day to buy the bike. My review would be five stars were it not for my experience a few days later. After riding the bike home (no more than two miles), the next time I tried to ride it, my tire was completely flat. When I brought it into the shop, I was told I probably rode over a price of glass or something. While I admit that's a possibility, I was surprised that they didn't acknowledge that there may have been a problem when I bought the bike. I suggested that as a possibility, but got a rather dismissive response. I made it clear that I was dissatisfied, but the employee seemed more interested in ringing me up and getting me out the door than at least explaining why the problem couldn't have happened on the store's end, if indeed it was possible to know. To be fair, the fix wasn't all that expensive and it was done quickly. I will be back there again when my bike needs a tune up. But I won't be recommending the place as highly to others as I would have before this experience. read more
