Songwriters of genres and levels meet for the purpose of taking their songs to the next level and becoming the best songwriters that can be. And the craft and business of songwriting is always on the agenda. What you want to know is are your melodies as strong as they could be? Are your words and lyrics making sense to others - not just you? What's your structure like - is it as commercial and appealing as people prefer? Song critiques are not for the faint hearted. These are your precious babies that people are talking about and even though it's tough, and you want people to gush and ooh and ah (you'll get some of that too usually) the truth about your song from an objective and craftsman's perspective is just what you need to help your write better songs. Besides the comments are very respectful and there are no nasty insults or put downs. It's all done very nicely and you'll learn a lot. I put one of my cowritten songs out there tonight and received some excellent feedback that will definitely make the song stronger. After having gone through this process a few times now I know what to expect. And how to take it the right way that will give me what I need. It's the rewriting of the next drafts that can make all the difference. Tonight there was also some information and tips for songwriting that I found particularly inspiring too. Plus there was a songwriting challenge with some cool publishing contracts with a USA publishing company on offer too. Gonna submit some songs to this cos who knows where it can lead? But here's a Seinfeld dilemma about Abercrombie Street Laundrette: My boyfriend (who, for the purposes of this review, we shall call Cicero) was a regular customer of Abercrombie St Laundrette, in our pre-washing-machine days. Late last year, Cicero gave this laundromat a basket of clothing, asking for the usual, a wash and fold. When he came to retrieve it, the laundry man (lets call him Philbert) showed Cicero how there was a blue biro in the washing load, and blue ink got all over everything. Philbert made it abundantly clear that he was not impressed, and it was not his fault at all. Granted - it's Cicero's responsibility to frisk his own shirts of their contents before putting them into be washed. And thoroughness in laundry is not one of Cicero's strong points. BUT ... here's what we're wondering ... do Philbert & Thelma also have some responsibility here? I'm still not sure. Here's the other thing. Cicero always uses black felt-tip pens, not blue biros. So where did the blue pen come from? Philbert stood his ground, despite Cicero's protestations. Everything was stained and Philbert wasn't going to offer free dry cleaning for anything. Cicero still feels a bit hard done by, his meagre wardrobe permanently tainted by a mystery blue ballpoint. But he took his laundry back there the next week, and Thelma smiled at him and unjudgmentally washed his ripped jeans and blue-stained shirts. This all went on until we bought a washing machine (see my review of JL Services). Just a note: This place has strange opening hours ... closing on unpredictable weekdays (sorry I can't remember this precisely, but if you're in a laundry rut on a Tuesday, best to call them first).
