They seemed to know every ripple of the river and were masterful in providing just the right level of instruction. They knew where the fish hid and what would make them bite. They provided clear, patient instructions sprinkled with stories that may be best not to share beyond the boat. Their approach worked for me, a novice, and for the others who were far more advanced. Great experience with guide Avery Wittman. He met us at a sporting goods shop for our half day fishing outing. We were first timers to fly fishing and since the rivers were very high due to spring runoffs, he took us to a nice medium sized remote lake perfect for learning. We were able to follow him in our vehicle for about an hour drive. Avery had waters and snacks in his cooler and we were allowed to bring some beers along for us. He was very patient and encouraging, showing us how to cast and putting us in good positions to catch some fish. Both of us caught a fish and really enjoyed ourselves! My wife and I scheduled a Monday fly trip with John Mallison. He met us at 9:30 in Columbia Falls, ready to go. Took us to a local launch point. Came prepared with all necessary equipment. Gave us good beginner instructions, then spent the rest of the day-long trip taking us to various hot spots along the river. Gave us guidance and suggestions as needed. Brought a good spread of cold cuts for lunch. We caught 5 fish between the two of us. A great local guide who knows his stuff and a good guy to spend a day on the river with. read more

I booked two different float trips; one on the Swan River and the other on the Flathead. My guide was Rod S., he was phenomenal. I've had a lot of guides over the years who I don't even remember their names...I will always remember Rod. He is now in my top 3 guides of all time. He was kind, he gave direction without being annoying and he was just an all around great guy. I may not have caught many fish but the experience was memorable. My wife and I fished with Jason today on a float trip. We are barely above beginner level fly fishers. The booking experience was easy and pre-trip communication was very helpful. Jason called a few days in advance to discuss our abilities and the current state of local fishing options. Due to the runoff the rivers are running fast (and thus more difficult to catch fish), so he offered a lake fishing experience that would likely result in more fish. We really preferred a more scenic river float and recognized we might not catch anything (especially given our relatively novice experience). On the day of the trip we met Jason and made the short trip to the launch point on the Swan River). From the moment we met Jason and saw the river - we knew we made the right choice. Jason is just an awesome person and the river was beautiful. Jason was so patient and obviously very knowledgeable about the river, the fish, and where the fish would likely be located. We spent the next several hours (it went by so fast) enjoying the conversation, the amazing scenery, AND catching some nice rainbow trout. Yes, we caught fish. BIG fish. We highly recommend fishing with Jason and Bigfork Anglers. It was a special day. read more

My wife and I had the opportunity to fish with Jason, the owner, last week in the Swan River. Jason was very helpful from the start: He picked a timeframe with us and told us to call the day before to check out the river conditions and check our options. When we did, he explained our options and help us pick a river that fit our time constraints. This was my wife's first time fly fishing, and Jason did a great job teaching her how to cast, mend, and pull in fish. She got up to speed with his help in about 15 minutes and she immediately started pulling in 16"-18" trout! We each pulled in several good size trout. Jason was very helpful at giving both of us tips on how to improve our casts, good spots to float, and good form tips in general. Throughout the day he was helpful, professional, and very friendly. Big Fork Anglers is a great outfit. Its a good store with lots of selection. It has a warm, friendly, easy going and sincere atmosphere. The owner, Jason, was my guide for a 1/2 day fly fishing excursion from a drift boat on the Swan River. I had a blast, unplugged and caught rainbows despite the fast running river. I found Jason to be very experienced, a good teacher and patient. He's also very knowledgeable about some of the history of the region and the river and shares that with you as you drift downstream. Jason worked hard to get me to those holes where the trout were hanging out even if he had to row upstream. Guide Adam took my brother in law and I out fly fishing on the Flathead River. Neither of us knuckleheads knew what we were doing but Adam's patience, expertise and skill as a teacher put us on trout on a warm, sunny day--not at all ideal fly fishing conditions. Okay I waited a few days to post this to get off my high. Booked this guide trip expecting to have your typical grumpy guide average float trip. Couldn't have been more wrong. Hit the jackpot with Avery as both my son and I hit it off with him. This is a guy you would have over for Sunday dinner. Averys knowledge of the Clark fork River was truly impressive. My son is a much better fly fisherman then I but he also learned so much from this guy. Seriously caught over 60 fish and a substantial number were over 16" both cuttthroat and Rainbow. Avery was patient and went way out of his way to put us on the fish. Ask for Avery you won't be disappointed. read more

I visited the Flathead area for a week in August and contacted Bigfork Anglers for a guided day trip down one of the local rivers. I could not have been more pleased with the ease of setting the trip up, and the quality of the guide. Cameron (the guide) was patient with me (I'm new to the sport), and we even hooked into a nice 17" cuttie toward the end of the day. Highly knowledgeable guides, friendly to newcomers, ease of contact and setting up the trip. I couldn't have asked for more. Floated the Flathead river with Ryan Stultz of Bigfork Anglers. The guys there are awesome. Jason the owner answered all my questions before booking and Sean kept the lines of communication open leading up to my float on 7/7/19. My guide, Ryan Stultz was fantastic! Fun to be with in the boat and knew the river. He worked his tail off to keep me on fish. If I missed one of his favorite runs he muscled me back up to make another pass and 9 out of 10 times I got a hookup. I caught a nice fat rainbow, a cutbow, an unexpected bull trout to check off my bucketlist and 35+ westslope cutthroats. What a day! The fish fight like crazy and are beautiful. I have been visiting Bigfork Anglers since it opened, every experience has been positive - the shop has a great vibe. I did get a generic apology from the owner...so I bumped it up to 3 stars. Thank you owner for the form letter...My original rant of being a tourist with a pocketbook:No love here. We be tourists and then ignored. Hey, tourists spend money too! We mentioned we were from out of town doing the tourist thing and the man got up from the counter and wandered over to a table of flies, tuned us out and did his own thing. It was odd. With this, we did not feel the love nor spend a penny. Such a shame as numerous other fly shops I went to in Montana, I dropped twenty to a hundred dollars or more. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS: I may not look much like a fisherwoman, but for those that know me, I was in the commercial fishing industry, had a boat and a seafood receiver.
