HANDICAPPED VEHCILE LOCATION VS HANDICAPPED PARKING LOCATION IS CRAZY, MAKES NO SENSE! This store has royallly messed up the location of their handicapped vehicles.The handicapped parking is no where near these little vehicles. To get to them you have to park in a non0-handicapped space, then go IN a door that is marked "EXIT" only. (I only know you can enter thru this"exit" door since a store employee tipped me off). Then to ride your cart to your car, you have to bump down a curb and since there will be another car parked close to yours (no handicappe spaces here) there is some difficulty in 1(getting groceeries into your car and 2)Getting the cart out of the way,. I have. always shopped at the seafood dept for items to go I went to get a fish sandwich to go, as I was tired from shopping,, the man was working both in the meat dept, and the fish dept, so I ordered a fish sandwich to go..never have I had such an experience like today. 12. 2, 26. the fish sandwich was put on a small round like hamburger bun, with the fish hanging out on both sides. while I hate to say this but the manager needs to check on this..The man was so grungy looking, I almost walked away. this is totally unacceptable for a person working with food, no gloves on, and looking so unkept. i have referred a lot of people there and will not do so, if this isn't changed please look into this, as I will no longer buy from the seafood dept, unless this is taken care of! thank you.. read more

Review for Manager Cam at Big Y I recently shopped at Big Y and selected two items that had store-provided coupons displayed right next to them. When I went to check out, I was told that the coupons were expired. I did not bring these coupons from outside; they were placed by the store itself. I had to wait for Manager Cam to come over and assist. Unfortunately, instead of handling the situation professionally and respectfully, he was very rude and dismissive, simply telling me "too bad" that the coupons were expired. As a manager in customer service, he should have honored the coupons since they were still being advertised by the store, or at the very least handled the situation with courtesy and respect. It was never about the small amount of money -- it was about being treated fairly as a customer. Manager Cam needs to better understand the importance of his role in providing good customer service. Best grocery store for meat by far! Good bakery also. The veggies are always fresh. I prefer shopping at this store for all the items mentioned above. Better quality than Shop Rite and S&S. Better prices than S&S but more expensive than Shop Rite on many items. read more

Worst big y ever!! Beware of sale items it means that the items are already in a process of decomposition. I do not mind to pay more, but the quality at this particular branch is simply unacceptable. Fast checkout is always higher than the offers in the store (double check prices at checkout) customer service very very low this people should get some training to deal with customers. Yesterday was an exceptional experience where something small was very big to me. While I was looking for a special garlic spread mix that could not be found a bakery employee, Liam, yelled out "Can I help you", I explained and no garlic spread was on the shelves so Liam offered to mix up a container for me within minutes. Although this is a small item it had a big impact on me since the employee went out of his way to reach out and then to take the time to put together something I needed. My family and I always shop here, and up till a few years ago, we always got my daughter's birthday cake here. We switched to another local cake shop, and earlier this week we had to come back to Big Y for her 15th birthday cake. We gave them a photo of a pastel blue cake, shaped in a heart. They said they couldn't do a heart shape, and so we agreed on a circle. The color we asked for was pastel blue, with the number 15 in the center. We picked up the cake today, and it was a mix of bright neon blue and royal blue, not pastel or even near the color we wanted. The 15 that was meant to be in the center was off to the side, and is a separate color blue than the two others in the cake. Really disappointed, wish they would've mentioned if they couldn't mix colors or frostings together, or that they wouldn't be able to center the number What makes the matter more saddening is that they had a photo of the cake provided by my daughter. I hated grocery shopping. The cold temperatures, the narrow aisles, the walking around in circles, and the crowds- ugh! I stumbled into Big Y a few weeks ago and I can honestly say I now love grocery shopping. I've been to others, but the Saybrook location is incredible. First of all the lighting, displays, and cleanliness are just so inviting. You wouldn't think this matter. But it does! The produce is arranged beautifully, prices are clearly displayed, and there is never a shortage of anything. The bakery is on another level. I am an accomplished baker and would likely order and purchase baked goods here when I wasn't feeling up to baking on my own. My boyfriend said their croissants are the best he's ever had (and the guy has eaten a lot of croissants). The meat selection is amazing. I don't eat a lot of fish at home, but the seafood looks incredibly fresh. There aren't one million aisles, but do not fret as they have everything. I've not had a problem finding any odd or quirky item, even my weird flours I use in baking. I can't wait to grind my own nuts for nut butter and try all their yummy soups. I just experienced Instacart shopping, choosing BigY in Westbrook. I have no complaints re the personal shopper, who was patient and diligent in selecting and replacing out of stock items, (and there were many). Unfortunately, the individual who checked her order out was rude and made rude comments about Instacart in front of her. Obviously,this cashier didn't comprehend that this person, (like her), was putting herself on the line to get groceries for an 84yr.old person with health issues, who could not shop in store. Not only did she spend an hour in an "covid risk environment" but she was subjected to an unhelpful, rude checkout clerk, who did her best to humiliate her in front of others! Also, the cashier refused to grant me the sales prices on items, because my Big Y card was not "active"? I just used it three weeks before! This is unacceptable behavior! The manager needs to review his/her training program for Big Y employees. Attitude passes down the line from top to bottom. I wonder how much support these cashiers are getting. The pricing system is so terribly convoluted, with layer upon layer of ridiculousness that completely undermines the stores attempts to appeal to high end wine, cheese and organic customers. In fact the pricing is so confusing that sometimes the staff even tell me the wrong information. Three Different prices are posted for every item. One price for gold coin, and another for silver coins and yet another for no coins. It's not a small amount either, these are big price differences. Coins are earned how? you can purchase a card that gives you silver coin discounts. like Costco? Yup. Wait, It gets weirder. At checkout you get to roll the fake electronic dice, and maybe earn a coin. Are you confused yet? I am. I'm repulsed by this and feel ripped off every time I'm here. Big Y is my favorite grocery store. I live in Ivoryton but travel to Old Saybrook to shop at Big Y because it's always clean and staff is so helpful there. I find this is incredible as one rainy day a nice young man actually came over to my car and walked me to the store with a umbrella so I didn't get wet. Then again when I came out he did the same and covered me and my groceries over while he was getting wet. Never had this happen before. Again a shout out to big Y !! I returned to the Big Y a week ago to give it another chance after several disappointing experiences with the store's produce. This was the worst experience yet. They had no butternut squash nor parsnips according to the produce person I spoke with. He did lead me to the jicamas - all dozen or so riddled with mold. I love this Big Y! It's always clean and well stocked. Great sales all the time, especially when they have buy 1 get 2 free. All the staff have there have been very friendly and I've never had a bad customer service experience. The gentlemen in the meat department are always helpful when I have questions and even give great cooking tips and recipes. Their homemade foods to go are always amazing. We love the fish and chips and a family favorite of ours is their pot pies and clam chowder. We stop here often just to grab a quick and easy lunch or dinner when we don't feel like cooking. Just the other day, I was there looking for a cake for my son's first birthday and they didn't have anything matching the theme I wanted. Katie, from the bakery said she would make up something nice for us for the party to match our theme and was very helpful. She even made a smash cake to go with it. I added pictures for you to see. Also, most people don't know, but kids can go to the bakery and ask for a free cookie. My kids look forward to it and got one every time we go as long as they've been on their best behavior. What does it take for me to seek out and write a review for a grocery store in a state I merely pass through every couple of weeks? Well, let me tell you: I went to go buy an avocado and they were $1.25 apiece. Fine. Then I saw a 4-ct bag of avocados for $2.98. Uhhh, #winning! So I bought that. When I got home several hours later I realized that I had paid nearly twice that for the bag of avocados even though I had used a store card. Why? Because in fine print that price only existed "with a silver coin." WTF?? Do I have a silver coin? No, I USE MONEY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. Since when did I have to become a 12th century B.C. blacksmith to buy fucking groceries in modern-day America?? Maybe next time it'll be cheaper if I drop by THE FUCKING IRONWORKS STORE before coming to Big Y! How much would my avocados be if I brought by some cast iron?? Although I like the store and most of its people, Big Y needs to be more sensitive to people. albeit well meaning to ask how someone is as a greeting, it is very insensitive to ask someone how they are, if they really do not mean it, which in 95% of the time is the case. I lost my best little friend - my dog - yesterday, the clerk asked me how I was and I answered not good, and he responded by laughing, thinking I was making a joke. I was so upset I started to leave without my change and that prompted the customer behind me to make a smartass remark. I cried my eyes out all the way home and was still shaking for over an hour later. This "How are you? greeting is overworked and asked when the person asking could really care less how you are. When the store first opened, I BOUGHT my savings card feeling it would pay for itself over a year. Well....not so much. You spend less if you go for the specials of the week only. And I was often hard pressed to find reliable brands I had used for years. I sometimes bought the store brand with mixed results. I tired of the coin system and faded away back to Stop n' Shop where I primarily purchased my groceries for years. Trying a bit to economize, I gave it a try one more time last week. I did fairly well, once again with specials. And thank the gods they have done away with the coins. In fact, the "Big Y savings Card" was now free! I guess the thousands of us that purchased it a year ago paid for everyone else! But here is the kicker... I bought a package of 4 Apple Fritters (3.99) displayed as fresh. As a matter of fact much of the display work of the entire store is awesome Full, clean and colorful. But again, major brands missing from selections. Took said "fresh baked" package home and settled to take a scrumptious bite. DRY, HARD with runny glaze. Clearly not fresh AT ALL. I actually took them back where the bakery manager proceed to tell be they "don't actually bake them here, so we don't know how old they are." OKAY THEN! So much for integrity! I felt like a grocery store version of that funny country song where after a few drinks all the girls look so glamorous and the guy wakes to find someone completely different and not looking anything like the night before. Very disappointed with the bakery. I went there on a Tuesday morning and the selection for birthday cakes or cupcakes was very sad. There were only a couple of each. On top of that, there was not 1 with the whipped frosting. The only option they had was traditional frosting, on everything. I asked the lady helping me why there were none with whipped frosting and she just shrugged, giving no reason, then said she would probably make some later. Everywhere else that I have been over the years, has both options available, in a variety of cakes and cupcakes. I usually don't go to Big Y because I find them to be very overpriced. I ended up here due to convenience. I needed to purchase flowers for a grave site. The woman working the flower department asked me when I would be able to get the flowers in water. I told her not for 4-5 hours. She said these flowers cannot be without water. I told her it would be alright since they are for a grave. She went out of her way and filled an old bucket she was going to throw out anyhow with water for me to take and keep the flowers in.
