I am a recent NY transplant, so I'm not a full-on NY pizza snob but have had enough NYC pizza to have an opinion on these things. I recently tried Big Y's pizza and honestly, I think it's better than most NYC pizza I've tried. It's got a perfect cheese to sauce ratio; the crust is crunchy - well more chewy than crunchy - but still decent enough. On its own, ranked against NYC pizzas, I would rank this ahead of any slice shop I've tried and just below NYC institutions like Patsy's and Angelo's. And, respectfully, not in the same league as Lucali (but few places are). While I love this part of CT, I'm glad I don't live near a Big Y, otherwise I'd be tempted to eat pizza more than I should. Oh, and $26 for a family pizza (that, again, is legitimately good) is an incredible deal. That would be like 3 slices and an order of garlic knots at my local slice shop. read more

The deli is not ideal. Subs are an overprice ripoff with little meat. Workers are not very friendly and unorganized. Just waited 5+ minutes to order when there were 7 people back there and no line. Just got blank stares from most of them. Front of the house and seafood/steaks are better. read more

I am new to the CT area and have tried several of the grocery stores locally. I am familiar with Stop & Shop, BJ's & Costco). But I *really* like the Big Y chain particularly the one in Groton & Old Lyme. Their deli is particularly good especially the pizzas & the Stromboli's. They use fresh home made dough & ingredients & the pizzas are made to order. I just ordered a pizza (the conveyor belt oven had been turned off for the evening so I wasn't able to order a Stromboli (which are EXCELLENT, and quite generous for $3.99!) I ordered a ham, spinach & mushroom & it was DELICIOUS. Their pizza sauce is fantastic: a yummy mix of tangy & sweet red tomato sauce. I have purchased mini desserts in the bakery & they were all fabulous. (Cannolis & the Lobster tails). The woman in the deli making pizzas & Stromboli's is very pleasant, accommodating, efficient & kind. She also makes great pizzas & strombolis. I ordered a few grinders from here at different times & they were all delicious. They have a large selection of bread, proteins, veggies & condiments which is great. The prices in the store are okay/not bad. (I found the East Lyme SNShop to be on the pricier side). The selection is very good here too. I purchased a small wheatberry & spinach side salad here tonight too that looked fantastic. (They also have prepared quinoa bowls also which looked great!). The produce section is also solidly good. I bought tangelos, blood oranges & lemons tonight & they were all good quality. I DEFINITELY recommend this grocery store. I have been here a dozen times over the past 6 months. I am interested in the sushi also... but grocery sushi can be dicey so I will likely only order when I see the sushi chef in the deli). Will update more as I try different selections! I wanted to make a brisket and searched multiple stores. There was a huge one for sale- too much for 2 of us. The butcher was very busy. He was helping a lady with her pastrami. We asked if he would cut the brisket down for us. He gladly went into the back and did this for us. It's cooking now and if it tastes as good as it smells we will be happy. This review is strictly for the managers, especially the manager of the seafood department. I had a little issue with an order and the seafood manager did exactly as I hoped he would do, and fixed the problem. I also spoke to the store manager (I felt strongly about the issue) and he did just as I would hope and also seemed to be very concerned about the problem. When these managers treat customers like they should be treated I will write a review like this acknowledging their appropriate performance. Thank you big Y. read more

You're store genuinely caters to the "Wealthy" and I find it very discriminating towards Seniors, Disabled people and any person that cannot afford to have a new cell phone with the "App". so you can "Honor" your freaken sales. Many of us cannot afford to have every updated, new piece of technology nor know how to use them. DISGUSTED, totally beyond belief. I shall never enter that store again after the attitudes that were given to me and them not honoring sales items due to me not having the "App". This store and managers are a total disgrace to this community!!! read more

The Chicken Salad always looks old, not that long ago I purchased ground meat and took it home and it smelled horrible, I brought it back and the manager opened it and say he couldn't smell anything, meanwhile a customer 20 feet away said, "How could you not smell that? I can smell it from here, its spoiled!" The manager proceeded to say its not the meat but its the gas the company uses to keep it fresh. What a line of BS! If I cant trust my local grocery store who can I trust? read more

No complaints! Was at my boyfriend's beach cottage over the weekend, and I think we came to this Big Y four times... we're forgetful! The staff was helpful and friendly, and we found everything we needed. Plenty of parking, clean interior. I will return when we come back to the shore! read more

This store has the same utterly ridiculous coin/card/three pronged pricing system as the other Big Y locations, which is a zero star idea all around... BUT, They have inexpensive and delicious hot soups that aren't loaded with preservatives and are by far the best priced lunch option in the area. The cheese section is not a bargain, and for the price point one can support the Centerbrook cheese shop instead (a small local business) . Big Y does have some wonderful local Rhode Island cheeses that I don't see in a lot of places. read more

I'm always amazed that shoppers who have 1 bad experience feel the need to absolutely trash the store. This store is perfectly fine. The help is generally friendly and the location is convenient. If the chicken salad looks old, please choose another selection. This is the reason things are showcased. This is an extraordinary year so perhaps restraint on some of the negative comments. Of all the grocery stores on the Shoreline this might be the most convenient but not the best. Prices are higher even with what seems to be faux sales. Produce and meat don't seem to be the freshest. And many items that are not exactly exotic can't be found here. What is really irritating is their ice cream freezers seem to be working erratically still-they charge more than other places for frost covered old Talenti sorbet that obviously has melted and has refrozen. Um, sorry no. Head over to Shop Rite in New London for better deals,. The butchers are nice if you can get em to come out from their perch. read more

They never have Items mentioned in sales flyer or are out or haven't come in or we need to go to a larger store Why should we drive to a larger store to buy the items? It should be stated in their flyers that product is not available in their Old Lyme store Unfortunately the store needs updating and should offer the same services as their newer stores. Checkout employees are very rude and unprofessional. I shall gladly drive the extra ten minutes to another store to purchase my groceries just to avoid supporting this business. My $200+ weekly grocery bill is better spent at a store with true customer service, not at this Big Y. read more

We live in Lyme and visit the Big Y every day. They have a friendly and helpful staff and great produce and fish. We are so happy that the Big Y came to Old Lyme and replaced the A & P. Another Super Big Y is coming to Westbrook soon so the entire Shoreline will be treated to this special regional grocery store. Yeah BIG Y! read more
