I had a highly disappointing experience with The Big Tree boss. In my opinion, he was rude and not very knowledgeable. It seems he prioritizes servicing as many trees as possible, regardless of the potential harm, just to get paid.
When I asked about the potential damage to a mature tree from removing more than 15% of its surface roots, he responded dismissively, saying he didn't care. He mentioned he removes roots until they are all gone, without considering the tree's health. My research indicated that removing more than 15% of surface roots can destabilize and harm the tree, possibly leading to it toppling over.
The boss also made it clear that he wouldn't be responsible for any damage or health issues resulting from his work. He emphasized that his job is to do what the customer asks, without providing advice or guarantees about the tree's well-being.
These roots were not causing any obstruction or damage to my sidewalk or driveway. The tree in question is a rare Red Ash, over three stories high with a 50-foot canopy, one of the last survivors of the Ash borer beetle. I suspect he sees a financial opportunity in felling this tree once it starts dying from root removal.
Additionally, he demonstrated a lack of arborist skills. During a community development project, he attempted to install a tree incorrectly until I pointed it out. He was visibly displeased when I requested the tree be positioned correctly.
When I asked about the health impact of root removal, he walked away and said he would charge extra for any future visits. This response came after just one question about root removal. Furthermore, three years ago, about 70% of the plants he replaced died within a year. While he replaced the plants, he charged for the labor, even within the first year.
In summary, his service appears to focus solely on felling trees and removing roots, without considering the health of the trees or providing informed advice. I do not recommend using his services. read more
