This used to be my 'Go To' BBQ in Berlin but after my Recent visit it seems 'different' and not in the best way. The choice was limited to 2 meats and it was 12.30 During a non existent rush Lunch hour. It used to be Lined with excited eaters, Now it's virtually empty. I'm not a fan of pork belly So I was left with underwhelming Dry Pulled but not Pulled Pork. And 13 euro for 200 grams. Needless to say this purchase was regrettable. My friend and I decided to visit the Markthalle Neun to check out her favorite food, New Zealand Pies. As we were getting ready to leave, I literally grabbed her arm and yelled, "Wait! I smell smoked meat!" I followed my nose to an oasis of of meaty delight: Big Stuff Smoked BBQ. I swear that tears formed in my eyes as I saw the writing on the glass display: BRISKET. Alas, my tears of joy turned to tears of sorrow, when the guy in front of me got the last delectable-looking piece. Then the tough decision: pulled pork or pork belly? Well, anyone with a brain would choose the crispy fat and juicy flesh of the pork belly... so I chose pulled pork. ;-) While I was waiting for my sandwich to be assembled, I started up a conversation with the owners about the difficulties of finding brisket in Germany. I was quite impressed with their knowledge of brisket versus tri-tip, and the delicate process of cooking brisket hot, then warm for hours. These guys knew their stuff!! After my pork was pulled (by hand), I was asked to choose a sauce. I went with the spicy one, naturally. Most sandwiches come with a variety of veggies: cucumbers, lettuce, etc., but I'm a purist. Meat, sauce and bun, please. Pickles on the side, if you've got 'em. I think my hands actually trembled a bit when I went to take the first bite. The aroma of the smoky sauce and juicy pork were almost overwhelming. The sandwich did not disappoint. I would even go so far as to say it was on par with some of the best barbecue I've had - even from central Texas, the Vaterland of barbecuing excellence. A glass of tart lemonade, garnished with lime, mint and cucumber was a delicious accompaniment to the sandwich. I'm already planning my next visit at the end of September. One of the best sandwiches me and my wife have ever had. The sauce was excellent and the meat just marvellous! Really juicy and full of flavour. Athmosphere and surroundings are just right, inside the marketplace there's a really relaxed feeling. We definitely recommend this place to anyone, anytime (when it's open), and if you're coming from somewhere a bit further away, it'll be worth the trip, we promise. We were entice to visit the street food Thursday with the promise of real BBQ. The BBQ has been the talk of the town all summer and it lived up to expectations. We selected the cheapest main offering of Pulled Pork Sandwich for 4.50 euro and it came on a hearty little roll, with this sliced apples & sauce. The meat was surprisingly a little cold in the center, but the flavors! When we asked for spice, he supplied a little heat and the meat itself was juicy and flavorful. there is a reason why many "recovering vegetarians" i know say the thing that broke their vegetarianism was bacon: pork is delicious. Big Stuff Smoked BBQ's foodstand in the Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg is an indelible underlining of this fact. they slow-cook all manner of pig-bits and beef brisket overnight over oak wood chips, which apparently has the effect of distilling pure awesomeness from the universe, because their sandwiches are a delicious slice of my school days in the southern USA. the meat is intensely flavorful and cooked so long it slips lazily from the bone, like it really is BEGGING to be in your sandwich. this cooking process takes such time and attention, that they're quite limited on how much they can make per day; given how tasty their food is, this means they typically sell out before the end of the market on Fridays and Saturdays. the menu changes on their whim --..pork belly sandwich with sea salt, pork shoulder sandwich with pickled jalapeños and an apple slice, ribs in apple glaze, beef brisket with sauerkraut..-- and can be combined with all manner of yummy sauce options from Friedrichshain's own Eckart Sauces. you'll do best though to take their suggestions of what goes with what (sauce on my juicy pork belly sandwich today would've completely swallowed the flavor). their meats, served up on a toasty roll, make wonderful little sandwiches or they can be combined into a 'greatest-hits' platter with several sauces, sides and meats, like a tray of deep-south tapas. Big Stuff's has all manner of bottled drinks available, but i'd suggest you wander over to the Heidenpeter's taproom on the other side of the market hall for a pale ale that goes perfectly with the meal. at €7 for a small sandwich and €12-14 for a platter, this is not the cheapest take-out lunch in this city, but given the quality and the simple fact that you can't find BBQ like this anywhere else in Berlin, i'd say it's worth the splurge. read more

WOAH! I could smell this place a mile away and I followed my nose all the way to Markthalle Nuen where it was apparently street food Thursday!! Along with an awesome craft beer from another local vendor I chomped down on some mouthwatering juicy brisket from these guys and I was instantly brought back home!! They BBQ with the best of them and it even was on par with the famous Franklin's BBQ in Austin. It made me feel a little more connected and a lot less homesick that day! Thanks Guys!! read more

Got the veal ribs for $7 euros, it came with about 5 pieces? It was a good amount for the price! I tried it with the steak sauce, which wasn't too sweet and more savory. It also came with a side of salted cucumbers which I thought was a good touch (wish it also came with something spicy or sour but that's just my taste). The meat was tender and fell off the bones and had a good amount of fat (I love fatty meats). Would definitely recommend this place! read more

We also tried a Lynchberg lemonade and a lunch plate with beef brisket, smoked potatoes, pickled cucumber, chili sauce and a bit of salad. All in all, a great experience, welcoming and nice staff and wonderful BBQ!! Quite cheap, too. We paid around 6-8 euro for each item. read more

What can I say, Big Stuff brings the goods. This is as good as BBQ gets in Berlin as of 2013. Both the pulled pork and pork belly are great, but I prefer the belly. I haven't bothered with any sides. You will be very happy, unless you're from the South, in which case it may just barely scratch that itch. There is a lot of love in these sandwiches, and though it is a little pricey, no one is doing it better right now. read more

5 star pork sandwich: no doubt about it. Please, take my word as a southern gal from Texas when I say that this was really, really good. I haven't had many meals in Berlin that I would dub as solid, great, and well-made, but Big Stuff is all of those things. Too many restaurants here are gung-ho to 're-imagine' American foodstuffs; and in doing so pile on relishes, sauces, toppings, and the like to the extreme. Big Stuff tops their pulled pork sandwich with nothing but a leaf of green, freshly shaved apple, and your choice of sauce, which allows the pig flavor to shine through on a sturdy, soft bun.
