On a road trip and stumbled on this place. This place has got it going on. Classic neighborhood soul food place with stage for bands. Greeter was from very friendly and our server Moriah was top notch. She catered to our every culinary need with a smile. All the food was delicious. We were treated right away and it was a warm welcoming treating of "welcome to the family". I love this the server was so sweet and explained the menus, Santa came out and welcomed us to the family. Delicious! We went as a family to have some good food after moving our oldest out of V State. I thought we were going into a small little BBQ place but when we walked in the place is huge and very unique. They welcomed us as family when we came in the door. It's a great space with a stage for bands/music. Beautiful pictures of legendary singers (just missing one of Wilson Pickett!). My favorite decor was the unique drum lights hanging from the ceiling that change colors. Everyone was very kind and helpful. Our waitress was so helpful and told us her favorite dishes. A manager came over to check on us. We got the Soul Rolls on her recommendation and they were sooo good! Our boys both got a smothered turkey leg with shrimp and chicken. The hubs got ribs and some yummy sides. I had the N'AWLINS SEAFOOD, which was shrimp and grits with blackened fish, and it was everyone's favorite. Sadly in the interest of being honest to the community, Big Nicks was not what I expected. The venue is super nice, there is a stage for a band and the staff is super nice. Me and friend went for lunch. We were among the first to walk and in a short time it was full. I went in to try the oxtails. When it comes to oxtails, the gravy is the make it or break it. The oxtails were very generous in size but were covered in a mountain of what appeared to be a packet of McCormicks brown gravy that I usually get from Walmart for mashed potatoes are maybe roast beef. The gravy had a slightly burned. I had beans and rice I would rate about a 3 and I would give the potato salad slightly less. We also tried the honey pepper lemon, wings which were flavorful but cooked a little bit too hard. We also had the chopped chicken which was good. My friend had the mac & cheese and said it was about a three and that the Mac and cheese at chick fil a is much. She gave the sweet potato soup soufflé about a four. We only finished a couple of the wings and I finished half an oxtail and we just grabbed a to go box. Maybe I will go again. I liked that they do have a stage for Band and the staff. I can say it was the first time we ate at the new location for this restaurant. The hostess was quick to seat us, initially the waitress came and took our drink orders, then came with drinks and took our meal orders. It took an hour to get our meals, there were 5 of us. We got 2 of our 5 meals and waited another 20 minutes to get the rest of the food. Waitress would never come back. Once you got food that was it, we waited and waited to finally catch her to say we wanted a check. I was impressed the owner came to the table about 10 minutes after we ordered. Asked how we were and went around the room talking to all the tables. If you like to watch television while eating there are 7 playing and they have drums for lights that change color. Hadn't been here in 3 years--now a newer (and much bigger) building across the road from the old . I am upgrading my review to 5 stars. We started with fried green tomatoes. Wife had a pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese as a side. I had the catfish dinner with potato salad and sweet potato casserole, plus an extra side of collard greens flavored with Texas Pete pepper sauce on the table (yummy !) Everything tasted great--the fish, especially--lightly breaded and fried perfectly--no grease. That was a s much as I could eat--got some peach cobbler to take home. Best part of the fried pork chops was the breading. The thin cut loin chops were greasy and just average. Dirty rice was undercooked .... Sweet potatoe soufflé was pretty good, corn bread dry. We were down for a wedding and found this restaurant. In a word - Amazing. Food was spectacular. Staff was friendly and amazing. Ambiance was totally southern and homey. We loved everything about this restaurant and the people who owned and operated it. The service was great! Julia really showed us what southern hospitality is. Driving from ATL to Orlando, my family and I decided to stop here after it was recommended by a staff member at Southern Shores seafood when we asked where we could get good soul food. With zero regrets we ordered the special of the day which was the salmon over white rice and a side. The food here is very well seasoned and fulfilling. Our waitress Julia was very patient, kind and laughed at our jokes. The music was R&B and I sang along to every song played. The owner Nick did make his rounds to the tables to ask how our food was. For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to your initials - then this isn't it. If, on the other hand, you're on the interstate somewhere the Florida/Georgia line is almost still within eyesight, here's a joint worth finding. "Joint," in this case, is not just the Brown Shoe Gourmet's favorite way of identifying good eating barbecue, but also in the name of joint: Big Nick's BBQ, Soul Food, Cajun Juke Joint at 1201 Baytree Road in Valdosta. For a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read my more than 125 barbecue reviews from across the country on Yelp), this place is a contradiction. When you think of a "joint," you're thinking of some hole in the wall. Not so, this place is a former pool hall updated into a restaurant and entertainment center. Comedy one night, live music another and karaoke. Ten years in Valdosta, a year in this location maybe a couple stones' throws away from the old one. Big Nick (there really is one), apparently figures he needs to be all things to all people has a menu that goes from fresh oysters and nachos, to turkey legs and Cajun pasta. When you have good barbecue, which they do, you really don't need all that. Who goes to Valdosta in search of fresh oysters? We opted for their Big Deal Combo: three meats, cornbread and a side for $24... more than enough for two folks. We threw caution to the wind and got collards as well. First, the sides; the slaw reminded us of the great slaw KFC used to have: finely chopped, full flavor. The collards were world class. Easy to over cook collards, they didn't. The fries, our server (more about her in a minute) confessed came to the kitchen frozen. Now to the meats or the meal. The ribs paced the pack. A unique rub that made for great flavor, cooked low and slow (we're betting over oak) moist and full flavor St. Louis cut. The brisket we received was dry and quickly replaced by our server (more about her a few inches down) with juicy, 10 to 12 hours smoked brisket. The pulled pork came in generous helping, moist, tasty but with the fat (which captures the smoke flavor) rendered out. Good, very but not great. Go for the ribs and make sure you order the cornbread rather than the Texas toast, Twas world class. A complaint: their sauce (unique combination of mustard, tomato sauce , vinegar and who knows what else) comes in one of little (very) cups. They'll bring more but why not put a bottle on the table and save the server (from coming) running back and forth. No room for their "Sweet to thy taste peach cobbler. An hur further down the highway, wee wished we had. Every once in awhile when you eat out, particularly in barbecue joints, you come across someone who is really unique and makes the visit all the more enjoyable. That was Moria. Commented how good the ribs were; "I made them," she said. Noted the great cornbread; he response, "I made it." Pulled pork was right on target; guess who said, "I made it." Told the first offering of brisket was dry; "Don't know who was responsible." Would you like to guess who said they made cornbread and sauce? Friendly, big smile, a great sense of humor and quick to made sure we had everything include the better brisket, more sauce, a second serving of cornbread and finally, without us even asking, drinks to go. One other thing: the restrooms were really clean. That can be important when you travel. Big Nick's Juke Joint (serving a lot of food beyond barbecue) gets 4 /12 stars for some really good 'cue and the final half star for a server who made our visit memorable. Informed us that we able to mix and match a few menu items. He was extremely patient with us think goodness because we were very indecisive. Let's start by saying the only soul food I like is the food made at my mom's house... but I must say that Mac and cheese was a hit. The collard greens was tasty but I like mine made spicy (my mom mince fresh jalapeños in hers) but they had hot sauce and a pepper sauce to achieve that flavor. The greens were tender and packed with plenty of smoked meat. My friend and I ordered quite a bit of food. I ordered the seafood platter as well as the catfish nuggets. First off, that fish is fried hard and if you're from that south you know that's truly the only acceptable way to eat fried fish. I don't eat much fried food but when I do I prefer to be cooked correctly. The food was seasoned to perfection. They have some house made Sriracha ranch a combination I didn't know I needed. The seafood platter consisted of 1 large piece of fish, 10 fried shrimp, a few hush puppies and 2 sides. You can opt to get coleslaw and fries or you can get any of the soul sides offered. The shrimp were FIREEEE! Lightly battered, deep fried and the shrimp still succulent. The fish was a swai, unfamiliar with that fish choice hence why I got the catfish and both was sooooo delicious! When we first walked in we were a little skeptical. Nothing fancy but wasn't expecting fancy. Took a few minutes before anyone came to the counter to take our order. We ordered the double burger w/fries, pulled pork sandwich w/fried okra, and fried green tomatoes. The food came pretty quickly. My pulled pork sandwich arrived on scrumptious looking buttery toasted Texas toast. The sauce and the meat were falling out the sides. It was very flavorful and tender. The sauce was the bomb and I don't usually eat BBQ sauce. Fried okra was good as well. My husband's burger was big! Fries were delicious but unfortunately the burger, while flavorful, was barely warm. Fried green tomatoes were a huge hit! Just the right amount of crunch and seasoning. My husband loved the sauce served with the tomatoes. At first bite he said it was too hot but then he said it was the kind of sauce that burned for a minute and then made you go back for more. I wish we had a Big Nick's in Chicago. We do not. We came in for dinner on New Year's Eve on our drive to Fort Lauderdale based on the Yelp reviews and pictures. Checking out restaurants in Valdosta, GA, Big Nick's grabbed my attention based on those reviews and pictures. And am I ever glad we chose this one. The ambiance was pure fun. The walls are adorned with the many awards Nick has won for restaurant excellence and community service. The background music includes James Brown and the Isley Brothers. The staff is SO nice. I wanted to try both the fried pork chop and the brisket, so they put together a customized combo platter that included both. The warmth and comfort of the place was welcoming and kind. And the food - OMG! The brisket was some of the best I've ever had. I have served as a certified BBQ judge over the years, and Nick's brisket would easily hold its own against the best of the best. Tender, juicy, flavorful - terrific brisket. The breaded pork chop was crisp on the outside and enclosed a juicy and flavorful pork chop within. My chosen sides were the candied yams and Momma's Mac (mac and cheese). The candied yams were perfectly sweet, yet totally suitable as a side with dinner. The mac and cheese was a perfect presentation of pasta and cheese. And the included cornbread was excellent. My wife had the grilled shrimp salad with homemade sriracha sauce. It included a very generous amount of perfectly grilled shrimp atop fresh greens and veggies. She loved it. I tasted it, and we agreed that the flavoring used to grill the shrimp was unique and delicious. Because we were finishing up near closing time, we had the opportunity to meet Nick himself. What a terrific and nice man he is. He has a history as a local DJ and celebrity, and his many awards attest to his community involvement. He told me he smokes the brisket for 14 hours, and he clearly devotes the necessary love and attention to everything he turns out at Big Nick's. I have no problem strongly recommending Big Nick's. The fried green tomatoes were such a a success that I didn't have a chance to take a picture. Yes, that good! Someone should bring Paula Dean here so that she can learn how it is done. That way she doesn't have to serve the garbage she sells in her restaurant. Right after that the cocktails arrived, I had the "Jolly Rancher " . The food here is so good that it feels like you are eating a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. You just want to eat until you explode! Seriously, someone should bring Paula Dean here so that she learns how it is done and maybe she will stop serving that garbage she sells in her restaurant. Big Nick's barbecue in Valdosta FL. Curbside order. While on a business trip, it was recommended as a locale restaurant. Two other co-workers and I checked the reviews, Yelp, of course. None of the reviews mentioned the food, all were about customer service. We decided since we would be getting carry out it would be fine. The only problem I had was there are no curbside parking spots, although, there was an option on the website for curbside pick up. When we drove up we just drove around the building and ended up in the drive thru. Once you enter you cannot get out. We waited 10-15 minutes. In this time I called to find out if the drive through was where we pick up and she said yes. My other co-worker drove up and went inside to get her food. We were just so tired we did not want to get out. Which was the purpose of curbside. The food: I ordered the wing and shrimp entree with Mac and cheese, wings lemon pepper flavored. It was good the shrimp were jumbo and the wing had lemon zest on them, love that. Both flavored well. The Mac and cheese was good I ate it warm but when I heated it later it was even better not dry or watery. My coworkers both got shrimps and grits one with coleslaw and Mac and cheese. She said, it all was good. The coleslaw and Mac and cheese was great. The grits creamy. The other also had collard greens, green beans and sweat potato casserole. She also was pleased with the meal especially the green beans. Pricing: $15-$20. My wings and shrimp entree did not come with a side because I paid $3.00 for the Mac and cheese. My bf and I needed something in our stomachs after a long trip from FL and we found this restaurant on Tik Tok and wanted to check it out. They are known for their turkey legs and my bf and I really wanted to try the stuffed turkey leg eight chicken and shrimp but we had to go light with the bbq pulled pork nachos. Theee nachos were KILLER!!! Plus the BBQ sauce was nice and sweet yet Smokey and light. Between the little spice from jalapeños, sweet and smoky kick from the BBQ sauce with a white quest drizzled on top just married together perfectly. We will back in the holidays! Who would I be if I didn't give this establishment a 5-Star review!!! There's nothing that brings me pleasure more than to see the owner in the building, it really says a lot about who you are and what you're striving for (because when the owner is there situations get addressed immediately). I called before I came to see what they had ran out of: no seafood Mac (so it must be popular), no bang bang sauce, and like two other items but that didn't stop me because as long as you have greens then I'm omw! I walked in and my eyes were intrigued by all of the paintings on the wall.. while my ears immediately soaked up the music. The whole vibe of the restaurant captured me and upon entering they say, "Hello, welcome to the family". That southern hospitality immediately tugged at my heart. I met the owner Nick, caught his vibe and knew that the food would be memorable before I even knew what I was ordering. I love how he interacted with the customers and you can tell that he really cares. The bartender Bree was amazing and knowledgeable. She made me two Jolly Rancher drinks and a nice shot of crown apple that had me lit! She also recommended the rib tips (that I didn't see on the menu) it comes with 8 (or so) meaty rib tips and one side for only $8 (I would've easily paid more for that meal without hesitation) I tasted them and my mind was blown. I got the lemon pepper honey flavor and FROM NOW UNTIL THE DAY I LEAVE THIS EARTH I will FOREVER remember the mouth gasm that I had when I took my first bite. It has a flavor and texture that made me forget about the troubles in my life and just indulge in the moment. I also ordered the veggie plate: two sides of greens (that were amazing), Mac (which was okay) and yams (I loved the yams because they didn't hide the flavor behind mounds of cinnamon, butter and brown sugar).
