Last May, 2025, (eight months ago), I adopted Dixie. She is a Shiba Inu who spent the first 7-8 years of her life as a breeding dog. Unappreciated as a canine companion, her only value was to make money. Fortunately, she found her way to BDRR, and ultimately to me. She was understandably anxious, fearful, and kept a distance. That was then. She is healthier. She is happier, wagging her tail and running to me when we play or I call her. She is family. Dixie is enamored with her two new canine sisters, and enjoys being outside feeling the sun. I am thankful for the BDRR. Because of my positive adoption experience, I became a volunteer. When time and weather permit, I try to help the busy staff do their jobs by not distracting them with walking dogs or setting up adoption events. In my experience as Client and Volunteer, I have two important conclusions: (1) the BDRR cares and undertakes every opportunity to find the right home for each dog through patience and compassion; (2) during their stay at the BDRR, every dog is treated like the most adored and loved family member, while waiting for a forever home. This was my second day attempting to adopt a dog, and unfortunately both visits resulted in wasted time and an uncomfortable experience. From the moment I walked in, the environment felt unwelcoming. I was not acknowledged for several minutes, and throughout the interaction I felt as though I was inconveniencing the staff rather than being assisted. When I asked to see small dogs, I was handed a flyer with very small photos and told that dogs are brought out individually instead of being viewed directly. This process was not clearly explained upfront. When I asked for clarification, the staff member appeared impatient and annoyed, making me feel uncomfortable for simply asking questions. I was told, "I'm just trying to help you," but the assistance felt forced and dismissive rather than genuine. I also received conflicting information from different staff members about how the adoption process works, which added to the confusion. The tone, body language, and overall energy made me feel like I was walking on eggshells. Based on how I was treated, I perceived the behavior as prejudiced and discriminatory, which was deeply upsetting. As someone trying to adopt and provide a home for a dog--and paying to do so--I expected a respectful, welcoming, and transparent experience. Instead, both visits felt like a complete waste of time. They have good intentions but ridiculous regulations. I have many acres & all are under camera surveillance. They won't let me adopt bc my pet will go outside in a completely fenced area. I have cash to go to a breeder & will do that. Dogs are euthanized or pets needing homes are denied this shelter. read more

Logistically, very well run... was interested in a specific dog, came to meet him and was surprised to see him in a cone. Evidently, he was neutered "a few days ago" and has a "little cut" on his leg, so he'll need the cone longer. We did all the paperwork and they took him to give his vaccines (not on arrival one month ago?), and we were given a printout of "complete medical history". No vet came to review. Now, about 36 hours after adoption, I'm able to gently look at this "cut". Its his whole lower hind leg and either mange or severe seborrheic dermatitis? I have make an urgent vet appointment for this poor boy. Also, he is 15 pounds and is clearly a spitz or similar... they just stated he was a "pure bred" and charged me $500... because he was from a puppy mill and I'm sure the breeders were very honest... read more

This facility is fantastic! I love the outdoor area where dogs can run and play and socialize. They have good training programs and are dedicated to saving and rehabilitating dogs so they make great companions ready to find their forever homes. While they wait, at least they're not stuck in a cage or are in a stressful environment. There were a few dogs on my list there that I wanted to meet, and I ended up with this lovable sweetheart (see pic). I love my Danny and I'm so happy he's mine! He is one of the best dogs I've had and it was worth the 3-hour drive to see him. I applied to adopt a Bernese Mountain Dog (Bruno 6372) a few weeks ago. A day after my application I received an email from Adopt-A-Pet saying the dog had been adopted. Then yesterday I received another email from Adopt-A-Pet saying Bruno 6372 was available. I was surprised but delighted. Before driving 2 hours from my house to Big Dog Ranch I wanted to inquire and confirm the dog was available, so I went into the Chat section of the Adopt-A Pet website. The Chat box responses were totally useless and uninformative. I found the contact information of Big Dog Ranch and called them. The lady who answered was not 100% sure the dog I wanted was still available. After several minutes she responded that the dog had been adopted. So I asked her, why did I receive an email yesterday telling me the dog was available? She responded that was an Adopt-A-Pet email and it was not from them. ??? read more

There is a rescue for everyone at BDRR & we found ours! Having lost our first pom in April, I filled out an adoption application on-line & it was approved. I 100% recommend you fill out the application before "window shopping" so that if you fall in love with a dog, you can walk right in, meet it, & put a hold on your furry friend. After our 2nd rescue pom passed in June, I never expected or knew when we'd be ready to adopt again. Until I got an email from BDRR & scrolled down to see 4 pom-mix puppies. The only female :) ! I went to see her that same day, went directly to the office, put her on full financial hold & 3 days later went to pick her up as she reached 8 weeks old. The minute I saw her, tears filled my eyes! I can't say enough great things about Big Dog Ranch Rescue. 1st, I wanted to take all the dogs. They are all so well taken care of. But I fell in love with Hutch since I first saw him on the website. Little did I know that Hutch was at the Alabama location. I almost took a road trip to get him. Little did I know that Big Dog would transport him to Loxahatchee for me, free of charge. OMG this place was 5 starts from every aspect. I wanted a puppy who would grow to be medium size (30 ish pounds) I filled out their online paperwork on a Wednesday. Thursday someone called and asked if I could come there on Saturday they would have quite a few puppies. The litters of puppies are from a rescue they did of Puerto Rican Street dogs and alot of them were pregnant. We went and the puppies looked like they would be too small or too big for us. As we were leaving a volunteer came up to us and asked why we were leaving empty handed. I explained to her what we were looking for and she said "Well, "Snow" had a litter of 15 puppies, and the runt of the litter is in the back. We couldn't bring her out because she had some diarrhea would you like to see her?" I was thinking oh boy, but said OK. So my husband and I sat and waited for her to go in the back and come back out with "Minnesota" NKA "Shelby" One look and we were in love. Probably helped us that she was all alone in a back room while all the other puppies were getting so much excitement. It was a perfect match. This is an absolutely PHENOMENAL animal rescue that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to add a furry friend to their family. I applied online and it took about a week for them to preview my application. Being that I was looking to adopt during the COVID 19 crisis, I was impressed with the level of precaution they took to make sure their staff and animals were safe, healthy, and taken care of. This facility is a nice shelter. They have a lot of open space to roam, and they are not in crates. The staff in the kennel homes (a,b,c,d) & lakeside trailers were so pleasant and seemed to love their job. The front desk however, has attitude problems. My family friend ended up adopting a dog but had a request that she be smaller, as she's older and has fallen before while walking a dog. The front desk woman seemed so appalled that we asked for a specific size. She legitimately rolled her eyes and her entire head, with not one care who would see. I know her name but don't want to name drop. So let's leave it as "Older women with the 80's haircut" Last I checked, adoption is adoption.... I just started to volunteer at BDRR. I've worked at a number of animal shelters as a volunteer over the years. BDRR welcomes the assistance with arms wide open and the staff's attitude reflects their appreciation. There are so many incredible ways they invite you to help out. It's great how they have signs on each of the 'bunks' that have a photo, origin and when possible any tidbit of info that helps you get to know that particular pooch. There are also signs to let you know that a particular dog is 'off limits' to ensure everyone's safety. I love how they group dogs together according to their size, and ability to get along with their bunk mates. My first day as a volunteer, I walked 4 dogs from the same bunk and cherished the time getting to know each of their different personalities. We walked all around the campus, past a large pond with ducks, over a bridge, and each sat with me on one of the many benches near the pond. I can't wait to return to meet more of these well taken care of orphans, and see how I can help. I am eager to make a continuing donation to support this wonderful shelter from continuing its sacred mission. These are good people who founded and run this shelter. read more

When we lived in Puerto Rico we rescued three dogs from the street and they moved with us wherever my career took me. After 18 years, the last one finally passed away last November, leaving us heartbroken. We had decided that we needed at least a year before we would consider adopting another dog. And then we saw a FaceBook post about a dog named Luke. We decided we wanted to meet Luke and now Luke is part of our family. The Big Dog Ranch Rescue staff were so friendly, kind and thorough. The ranch itself is simply amazing but the most important issue is how they are finding forever homes for this sweet dogs. They warned us of Luke's food aggression issue so we wouldn't be surprised and we are working with Luke to overcome it. By far the most toxic place I've ever worked at. I was the maintenance manager. The founder is the typical arrogant only care about myself type of person who talks down and disrespects literally every employee she has. She has no interest in having a normal conversation and only says do it my way because I said so. She will say do it this way today and completely change what she wants the next day. She's completely delusional and has honestly lost her mind in her old age. She cares about the dogs they save but not the employees that take care of them and run the company. No matter how much experience you have she will tell you you don't know anything and then when you ask her why did you hire me then she just walks away. The whole management staff is toxic and only care about themselves. There's a reason the place has terrible reviews and a high turnover rate. I don't understand how someone with so much wealth can be so miserable. read more

Absolutely terrible experience trying to rescue a dog from this group. With an approved application it took the woman in Alabama two weeks of leaving messages, emails and text messages to return our call. We called WPB multiple times to try and help but no movement. Finally she retuned the call. Said the dog would be transported from Alabama the following week. When that didn't happen she said she wasn't sure how long it would be. Last night we got a call that the dog will be here tomorrow for 1/2 hour. If we can't be there tomorrow then the dog will not be shipped to Florida. If we can, we have a 1/2 hour to decide and have to take the dog same day otherwise the dog will be on a return bus to Alabama by noon. Absolutely a garbage operation. read more

I went here the 1st time today with my neighbor. She has been getting towels and blankets to donate. And this was her last place to bring stuff. . Its so amazing there. And the people there are wonderful. Where you can go see the dogs that are up for adoptions. Its so cool . there are 3 or 4 dogs in one nice size stall. This has by far been the worst adoption experience of any pet I have owned. From pre adoption and not getting clear answers about our puppy's medical history to being denied THE ADVERTISED FREE follow up visit for any medical concerns due to the lack of competency of employees across all departments. Issues started when the veterinarian side of this poorly ran business could not give a straight answer on if our dog was being spayed. One staff member "Hailey" even said "of course she will not be spayed as she is too young and that is inhumane." To find out the following day she was in fact spayed. Issues continued when we were told that our puppy had Coccidia (a common puppy parasite) which we then found out later was not true and she was actually suffering from E. coli. Thank god our personal vet was able to figure this out for us when her symptoms did not improve. When our puppy finished her antibiotics her symptoms started to return. At this point we spent almost $2,000.00 out of pocket at our own vet so we figured we should take big dog ranch up on their free follow up policy and make the hour drive. My wife booked the appointment and when she arrived it was never put in the system and they refused to see our sick puppy. The staff was more interested in filming for the latest marketing stunt instead of following through on evaluating our puppy (mind you it was 4:30pm and they close at 5pm). The staff even said they felt they were being bothered because they close soon. Finally I was promised a partial refund of adoption fees as a first responder a month ago and still have not received this refund... they said it would take at most 7 days and have not completed this task after several inquires. Do not adopt from this facility! The vet was so rude and had no desire to help a sick puppy that was right in front of her that had an appointment. They do not take care of their animals, their staff is not passionate about their line of work, and the owner is more interested in profit margins than making the adoption process safe and simple for each animal involved. read more

I just started Volunteering at Big Dog Ranch Rescue this weekend. Clearly the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Please, please, please help this wonderful facility. Adopt a dog, make a donation and/or become a volunteer for these awesome fur babies. They just want to fill your heart with all the love and attention you could ever hope for. Unconditional love is priceless. You can't buy this happiness. The facility is outstanding! No cages. The residents (doggies) have their own rooms and friends. It's super clean and doesn't smell "doggie." Run, don't walk to have this outstanding experience. Staff and Volunteers were top notch. We adopted two bonded dogs from BDRR. The experience with BDRR was excellent and have already recommended this organization to a few people. I especially liked how its website provided information about each dog so that we could research our options before visiting. We aren't the type that can handle walking down row upon row of homeless animals and saying "no," so knowing ahead of time the availability and temperament of adoptable dogs beforehand made everything much easier for us. I also made a number of phone calls and sent emails with questions as I researched available dogs, and I want to thank the staff. Anyone I talked to was as helpful as possible and pleasant, not at all dismissive. When we visited, the staff was also very friendly and informed. We live in Port St. Lucie, so it was a bit of a drive for us, but it was very much worth it. read more

In July 2021, I fostered a puppy from the Dominican Republic, adopted a Golden Retriever "rescued from the meat trade in China", and less than 24 hours later surrendered that same dog back to BDRR. Within that month I saw a pattern of behavior within this rescue group that I found disturbing, and decided that I did not want to be a part of. As I sat in their medical center, holding my anxious foster puppy on my lap, the owner, Laurie Simmons, walked in, looked at her and said, "She's nervous because she doesn't want you to leave her here again." When a staff member informed her that a potential adopter only wanted small dogs, she replied, "Tell her we have 400 poodles and corgis coming over from China." I knew at that point that the ranch was at capacity. I saw on their Facebook page that they were asking for donations for food, because they were exceeding what was supplied by their corporate sponsor. I wondered why they would bring in more dogs than they had the funds to care for. In the adoption photos for these poodles, other dogs can be seen in the background in crates stacked on top of each other. The sweet Golden Retriever I brought home had a strong odor, sores on her neck from her plastic cone, ears crusted with dirt and scabs, and matted fur. She was 5 days post op from spay surgery, so I gave her a sponge bath, cleaned out her ears, brushed her fur and cut out the matted parts, loved on her and then brought her back the next day. By that point, her post on BDRR's Facebook page had received over 1k comments. I knew that she would find a home. And I felt too uncomfortable at that point to be involved with BDRR any longer. My hope is that they will stop intake of any further animals, and focus instead on finding home for the ones they have. I will choose to support smaller rescues in the future who are transparent about their dogs' backgrounds and only take in as many animals as they are able to provide optimum care for, that is consistent with their own publicized standards. read more

I adopted my dog, General Mattis (previously Osko), from Big Dog Ranch Rescue almost a year ago. I return every week for obedience classes. The classes have socialized my dog more and given him (and me) more confidence. I tip my hat to the owners of this facility because it is better than most pounds and rescues that I've been to. All the dogs have very nice rooms and cots to stay in/on rather than cages made of fencing. Additionally, the play yard has a water fountain and dogs can enjoy walking around the lake even further back in the property. Dogs that are better alone get their own cages. BDRR rescues from all over the United States and internationally as well. Some of the last rescues were from the Bahamas and China. My dog is from North Carolina and was given a second chance at life... whew! Not only does BDRR treat their dogs well and send old dogs off to another location to live out their old age in peace, but there's a veterans program that gives military veterans emotional support or service dogs. The training program is 18 months in length and the trainers work with the Department of Veterans Affairs as well! I have also heard from the trainers that BDRR is implementing rehoming retired police dogs soon. The only improvement I would offer is for the front-desk and medical staff to be more efficient in answering and directing phone calls. As this is has been an ongoing dilemma for me, I just drive to the ranch and speak to people face-to-face. It's less stressful to just avoid calling in. read more

On June 26, 2024 I found an abandoned French Bulldog puppy in the field across from my house, I named him Winston. My neighbor found Winston on her morning walk and called me. I took Winston to my private vet that day and he was diagnosed with hook worms. I had Winston dewormed and purchased other needed medication for him and brought him home. My neighbor in the mean time contacted Big Dog Ranch Rescue (BDRR) to see if they take puppies. A woman named Chelsea started making regular contact with her about Winston. Asking for updates and photos, all of which my neighbor provided. On June 28, 2024 I took Winston to PBC Animal Care and Control (ACC) so that he could be listed as a found dog as the law requires. ACC took him to test him and give him vaccines when they discovered Winston was Parvo positive. I told ACC I was in contact with a rescue I work with and would pay for treatment myself. ACC refused to give Winston back, stating they had never had a dog come in and then test Parvo positive, they didn't know if they could give him back, and they weren't even sure how to clean the chip scanner since they had scanned Winston. Currently, there is an outbreak of Parvo at ACC and within Palm Beach County. I was informed they would contact me the following morning as to the next steps. While standing at the counter in ACC I updated my neighbor who, unbeknownst to me, relayed the information to Chelsea. Saturday morning, June 29, 2024 I was contacted by ACC stating Winston was now with BDRR and to refund me for the vaccines. I was told that all of my information was given to BDRR by ACC. On that Saturday I emailed BDRR explaining the situation and that I do want Winston. I did not receive a response - ever. My neighbor text Chelsea to which the response was "yes we have the puppy." I put an application to adopt from BDRR, again doing my best to abide by the rules, and to this day have not heard anything back about my application. My cousin, on the other hand, was approved in 6hrs on that Sunday to adopt. On Monday July 1st, 2024 my neighbor went to BDRR where she was informed by staff that Winston did not have Parvo but was exposed to Parvo. She was also informed that they had named him Abe. She asked to speak with Chelsea but was told Chelsea was on vacation. Staff stated they had never heard of my name, it was not given to them by ACC. My neighbor provided my information to the staff in the medical building as well as explained the events of finding Winston and that I did want him. The following Saturday July 6, 2024 my cousin and I went to BDRR to inquire how Winston was doing and if it was possible to be contacted when he was medically cleared. The staff at the front desk said they couldn't pull him up in the computer and all they knew he was that he was in quarantine and was not available to be seen. They could not take my information because they do not hold dogs for someone unless they are traveling a distance and they do not allow pre-adopts. My neighbor reached out to Chelsea numerous times throughout the past weeks with no response. Over the past two going on three weeks my cousin, numerous friends, family members, and myself have kept a watchful eye on the BDRR website waiting for Winston to be posted so that we could go adopt him. I had heard that Winston was "pre-adopted" by a staff member. I started reaching out to friends to see if anyone knew anyone within the organization. Through friends of friends I was able to make contact and have my story heard by Lauree Simmons the founder and CEO of BDRR. She relayed on July 15th that, though Winston never appeared on the BDRR website, he had been adopted by someone that is not a staff member. BDRR did not rescue Winston from ACC. They didn't save him from the field. I saved him from the sweltering heat in that field, took him for medical care that day, and provided a safe place for him. Then it appears that it was a consorted effort by Chelsea on behalf of BDRR to get Winston when I took him to ACC and he was found to be Parvo positive. The actions by Chelsea were, what I believe to be, predatory behavior as she obviously was aware that once he was in ACC custody, and ACC was in a state of confusion as to if I could have Winston back, she had the prime opportunity to take him. Chelsea put in a request to ACC to take him though ACC never put out a rescue request to the local rescues. With insider information from a well intending citizen, Chelsea utilized the system to her and BDRR advantage and stole Winston from me. Love, Love, Love this place! Great facility. Large place with plenty of room for their dogs. Very clean and the staff are incredible. They take very good care of their animals. I am a US Navy Veteran and recently got my soon-to-be service dog through them. He is a great match for me and we are excited to begin our training together! Can't thank them enough! My husband and I had a horrible experience. Do not trust this rescue. We had a dog on hold to adopt and they gave her away to another family despite the hold. We did everything right. We had our application approved, we set up a meet and greet appointment, we sent in our current dog's proof of vaccines and spay, we put a 24 hour hold on this specific dog to meet at our appointment, and BDRR flat out LIED to us and gave her away. We recently lost one of our dogs due to bone cancer, and we finally felt like we were ready to welcome another dog into our home. BDRR completely ruined that. We will no longer be supporting this rescue, and we will not be recommending BDRR to anyone. They are extremely unprofessional with poor business practices. We would give 0 stars if we could. read more
