I saw Big B's as I was driving down U.S. 29 one day, and decided to stop and grab some BBQ to go. I ordered a full rack of the Baby Back ribs, and a large container of Brisket. I attempted to order containers of Collard Greens and Mac n' Cheese, but they were all out - previous customers had cleaned them out. I was wearing a facemask when I walked up. The lady inside, while taking my order, was not wearing a facemask. The gentleman manning the smoker/grill - had one around his neck. He came out to ask me a question, and did pull the facemask over his face when he got closer. I got home and broke into the meats. I was disappointed in the flavor of the Ribs - something about the sauce and smoke just did not resonate with me. However, the Brisket was outstanding! Great roadside attraction! Coming back from hiking Old Rag, we were craving some hearty high quality BBQ and this hit the spot! We ordered pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad and iced tea. The pulled pork was fresh out of the smoker cooked to perfection - not too dry and topped with a refreshing Cole slaw. The sides were also top notch. Shortly after getting our food, Ms. BBQ came out to meet us with a list of BBQ sauces to choose from. It was ok. The chicken wasn't worth the wait. Skin was rubber, like plastic wrap. The pork sandwich was ok. The corn bread fingers were good though. The pork wasn't smokey enough . The vinegar was almost just plain vinegar. Nothing other then a single note of vinegar flavor. Would I go back? No. Would I eecommend? Not really. This place is busy because there is nothing around it for miles and miles. read more

Alert, it really is a food truck. It seems a bit unclear, didn't matter to us...we were getting carry out. The menu was robust with bbq, we got pork, various sauces, slaw and potato salad. The potato salad was for sure the highlight. Everyone REALLY enjoyed it. The slaw was nondescript. The BBQ, for which they are known, was decidedly just okay. Now, in fairness, we've had to adjust our expectations because we are from the north or midwest...depending on who you ask. As such, we do not like vinegar based sauces. Luckily Big B's puts the sauce on the side. The issue was the sauce was just okay, so was the meat. It was good, but not 5 stars. It is always a bit risky when the best thing at a bbq spot is potato salad. read more

I saw the reviews on Big B's and decided to check it out since we love BBQ. Spouse had pulled pork and I had brisket, which was delicious--the best brisket I have ever had. Their sauce is a very good addition, but the brisket was good by itself. We went back for the fam lunch (enough for 9) a couple days later. There weren't many leftovers. We had the truck in our neighborhood this past Friday and ordered a rack of ribs, side of mac n cheese, 1lb pulled pork, 1 stuffed potato (has pulled pork and cheese in it ). This was hands down the best BBQ I've had. I'm looking forward to eating there again, I will definitely be a regular once they permanently open. read more

After passing by this place many times since our vacation rental was near by, we decided to walk over to try it. It is located in the corner parking lot of the Tiki Mart/Bar. We ordered a full rack of ribs, a pulled pork sand which with Cole slaw on the side, and a pulled pork platter, with collard greens, potato salad. I can honestly say this is the best meal I have had while on vacation. I am bummed I did not check it out our first night here. We had it for dinner last night and I am still thinking about it. I should start by saying I don't really enjoy pulled pork, but this was the best pulled pork I have ever had!!!! The ribs were beyond delicious, and al the sides were sooooo good!!!! I love collard greens and these were made just the way I love them!!! They have a station out front with what looked like homemade BBQ, we tried a few and enjoyed them all. The pit master took the order and he was so friendly and you can tell he takes a real pride in his craft. They had there puppies outside next to them in a covered area which was super sweet, that they bring them to work. You can tell the locals know them because they come and sit in the camp style chairs out front and chat with customers that are ordering and go see the dogs. I noticed other dogs as well, so I think it's a dog friendly area. After we got our food we decided to go walk around back behind the tiki bar and sit at the picnic table because they had live music. We ordered a couple beers and it was nice very laid back environment. They have corn hole and other games in that area with all the picnic tables so it was nice. I can't say enough about just how delicious this bbq is, but if you happen to be near the area while they are open you should definitely try it out. I know I will definitely be back! read more

This is a taste of heaven ! The service is as great as the food especially when you get the pleasure of getting Mrs B to help you she is the glue. Mr. B is awesome too. The food is filled with great flavor. The ribs are the best I've ever had and I'm very picky with my ribs. Portions are huge ! If your within an hour of the place make the drive. Excellent BBQ and great ownership! Recently spent two weeks in North Topsail Island. The first night we had BBQ from Big B's and boy did we start the vacation off right! It was excellent! My kids have fallen love with BBQ now! The baby back ribs are amazing! The pulled pork is very flavorful and captured the smoke taste very well. And the sauces and sides were excellent! The potato salad has a great nuanced taste... I think they use sweet pickles in the recipe. I would highly recommend Big B's. read more

By way of establishing my BBQ cred, I was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and raised in Memphis (like the King of R+R). Anyway, what a joy to discover Big B's Smokin BBQ. Big B uses a blend of hickory and red oak. The red oak provides a mellow undertone to the hickory - about the perfect amount of smokiness in my estimation. We had the pulled BBQ, which to me shows that someone has taken time to pull rather than cut and chop or Lord forbid run their q through a machine. Big B uses a fine, well-balanced rub that will fit the tastes of all (as opposed to some places that use a rub too salty or that has too much heat for some). He doesn't add sauce to finish which is great; he provides a full spectrum of sauces so that individual tastes can be accommodated - a wise choice in a beach setting with folks from all over. All in all, if you're at Topsail and want some BBQ fixed on site - you won't go wrong with Big B's Smokin BBQ. read more
