My two boys (ages 8 and 11) have had a great experience at Big Blue. We have been to another swim school in the area, but we like that the goals here are well-defined and measurable, so the students know exactly what they need to accomplish to level up. The kids like checking the app to see what they've accomplished so far and what they need to work on to get to the next level. The staff is all so friendly, helpful and encouraging. My son tells me that MKai is very funny but also is a great teacher! The facilities are super clean (especially compared to our other school!) and the waiting area is large with a large viewing area. There are several open showers, but very few private showers which is a bummer. I also wish they had a longer full-length swimming lane for the more advanced kiddos instead of having them make U-turns in the shorter lane. Otherwise, the pool size is perfect for smaller kids and beginning swimmers. Really happy to have found Big Blue! read more

Big Blue is conveniently located in the Tustin Marketplace. It's pretty new & when we stopped in they were running a promotion which included about a month's worth of classes for $80. Classes are once a week, 30 mins long. This price is heavily discounted. We did one month's of classes. The facility is nice & new, which is great. The pool is heated so it makes it comfortable for your little one in the water. Outside the pool area is glass windows so if you don't feel like sitting by the pool watching the class from the bench, you can also sit in the lobby area which is air conditioned. There are also hair dryers & plastic bags to put the wet items in when you're going home. I only did one month's worth of classes because for normal price of about $150 a month (one class a week!) I feel like that price is NOT worth the money. I enrolled my 16 month old son in the baby class. The instructors are a hit & miss. The classes are about 6 kids total but I feel after a month's worth of classes I could teach my son the same techniques for free. The instructor isn't that involved & I think it's sort of a gimmick of how advancing up a class is done. Overall, the facility is really nice. But way too expensive otherwise for a group class. read more

Pretty great experience with the swim lessons, the facility, and the staff. We were able to do the first month discounted, but may not be continuing after this month since the regular price is pretty steep. We really liked how new and clean everything was at the facility and would recommend people to try it out. Random side note, I went to the restroom and noticed one of the male employees take a dump and not wash his hands at all before going right back to work. I have nothing but great things to say. We bright our child here after a bad experience elsewhere that left them a bit terrified of swimming and the water. The way our child has blossomed here with the program and coaches they have had been amazing. Our child is in a level now swimming laps and learning all the different strokes with constant corrections from the coach. A HUGE shout out to COACH KRISTEN. She's an AMAZING coach and is constantly working during every class. The attention she's able to provide to the whole class while also giving individual instruction every single lap and exercise is amazing and has been paramount to our child's progress in this current level. If highly recommend this location for general swimming lessons, kids afraid of the water, and actually progression and learning of proper technique. We had a really positive experience with Big Blue Swim School in Tustin. We enrolled our baby last year when he was about 8 months old and appreciated that they offer classes specifically for little ones. The facility is bright, clean, and well-maintained, with a strong emphasis on hygiene. Since the pool is indoors, we never had to worry about the weather. They also provide bags for wet clothes, which is a thoughtful and helpful touch for parents. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the instructors do a great job keeping kids engaged and comfortable in the water. The mobile app makes scheduling and managing classes easy, and they often offer good deals since they're new, which is a big plus. We haven't been able to go consistently due to our busy schedule and are currently taking a break, but we definitely plan to return. We've been swimming here since they opened and we have had such a great experience. My daughter has a hard time with new teachers, but not here. Everyone knows her and she loves all the coaches. Both my kids had/have Coach Angela and Brenda. Both Angela and Brenda are fun, really encouraging and displaye alot of patience with my younger son. I had high hopes for this swim school because it was close by and was indoors, which meant we could continue classes throughout the wintertime. After about a month, we switched swim schools and oh my, the difference was shocking. The classes here are so robotic. I don't know how often they switch learning models but it felt like the same repetitive drills over and over again. My daughter had one makeup class left, so we came back, and the instructor was amazed at her progress. But even then, she wasn't able to move up a level because of age requirements. How's that supposed to help kids advance their swim skills? It feels more like a box-checking system than an actual teaching program. read more

The swim instructors are lovely. The issue is with the management and the business model. They promote free make up lessons but it's almost impossible to schedule a make up class. I have been told on multiple occasions to book at another location because they have no availability. Then the calendar to reschedule only goes 2 weeks out so it becomes a very time consuming process on the parent side to have to continuously check the schedule to see if there is a class that aligns with your schedule. Progress reporting is ambiguous. All the children are being taught the exact same. So if your student still needs help mastering a skill they fall through the cracks and progress is not made. Even when bringing it to management and being promised notes would be placed for the instructors attention nothing was really done. It was just to pacify my advocacy for my child. Quite frustrating. I ended up giving my 30 day notice to withdraw and attention to my son's process became even less during that last month. No more monthly charge = no care to help my child progress. read more

We just finished our eighth lesson at Big Blue and I am so incredibly impressed with the progress my son has made. He's a very risk adverse kid and we were so nervous about him taking lessons even though we know he needs to learn how to swim. At his first lesson, he was so nervous that he refused to even get in the pool. The leadership team at Big Blue were so kind and let us reschedule our trial lesson with a 1:1 instructor. For the first few weeks, Kelly did an incredible job encouraging our little guy to get in the pool. After the 3rd lesson, he really began to flourish. He's enthusiastically participating in every activity, has loved every single instructor, and is so proud of himself. He's finally letting the instructors hold him in an assisted back float! This kid has never even let us lay him on his back in the tub with a half inch of water. We can't recommend them enough! read more

My kids have been learning at this location for 3 months now and have made significant progress. I love that: - the facility is clean and well maintained - the instructors are all super friendly, knowledgeable and good with kids. I have seen them coaching other kids who are scared or resistant and they all do a great job gently motivating those kids to participate - for my own kids, I particularly LOVE instructors Angela and Caleb. They make it super fun for the kids and are just lovely to watch them teach - the app is easy to use! - the only complaint that i have is even though my account is automatically charged on the first of the month, i dont get the detailed statement in my account or email. I have to request the staff to email me. This seems weird. read more

Terrible experience! Both my kids have been attending another swim class all summer and loved it! My 5-year-old son can swim, so neither of my kids are afraid of water (I only wanted to switch the swim class because I wanted an indoor, warmer pool for the fall and winter). However, they cried hard and refused to go into the water at this place because it was too crowded, and the instructors were not friendly at all! They ignored us when I introduced ourselves, which shocked me. Anyway, I went to the front desk and asked to withdraw our membership, but they said we needed to give them a 30 day notice. I explained our terrible experience, and she agreed to give me a refund and withdraw our membership. However, I noticed today that they only gave a partial refund without telling me! Also, don't bother trying to call them--you'll be on hold forever! read more

Okay so I'll admit I need to eat my words here. We visited big blue swim school last week for a trial class, and I walked away feeling like it was very similar to aqua tots, except newer, and definitely more expensive. The instructor I had was good, but I didn't walk away feeling like wow. I wondered if I made a mistake but I decided to give them another chance and they proved me wrong. We had Coach Evelyn as the instructor and she was AMAZING. Literally a dream instructor. She was patient, kind, spoke clearly without shouting. I am thrilled that she's the instructor teaching my daughter's class. So now eating my words, Big Blue is not like AquaTots. I started my kids (3 and 7) here when they first opened and have consistently been going on a weekly basis until now. They did not know how to swim before learning and to see them now makes me so proud! We had coach Evelyn for my son's baby class and he has since moved up two levels and loves coach Evelyn. She's an amazing instructor and so great with the kids. My daughter swims mostly with coach Joaquin who has also been great with her and she loves his class. I am so thankful we found Big Blue Tustin. Five months ago, my son refused to go into the pool and now he's doing freestyle back and forth with ease. We tried lessons at other places here and there for the last 2 years with minimal success - this is the first time I've seen actual progress. A lot of that has to do with his instructor Lilliana who has just been wonderful, encouraging and patient with him - he's grown so much more confident in the water under her guidance. She is the best. I also appreciate that the facility is so clean and well maintained and that every single staff person there has been helpful and welcoming. In short, assuming the coaches are good, and the kids make steady progress instead of plateauing like at AT, we will switch to BB. Rating is for soft opening first impression & comparison to AT: 1. BATHROOMS: BB wins because there is a REAL SHOWER in the women's bathroom (I assume there is one in men's too, but haven't confirmed). Separately, inside the enclosed pool, there is a bathroom directly connected (great for kids like mine who refuse to pee in the pool) 2. POOL AREA: BB wins if it's important to hear what the coach is saying to your kids. Parents can sit in front of your kiddo's lane, but it's hot and humid inside since the pool is heated. Parents also have the option to sit and watch outside the glass where it's more comfortable. 3. CHANGING AREA: AT wins for a much deeper and wider bench in the changing room, which TBH I didn't even know was important to me until I didn't have one at BB. BB benches are shorter in depth and length, and you lose a couple of inches of depth w the baby changing station that sticks out above it (which, my toddler lightly and accidentally bumped her head on, even when it was closed). Obviously not a deal breaker, but it matters when the kids are young and you want to keep them off the wet floor after changing into clean clothes and socks. To clarify, it's not about the size of the changing room, and instead is about the size of the bench itself. Not a problem for older kids but is def a problem for smaller kids who are still learning to put on socks and shoes cuz now you don't have the extra real estate to do it on a wider bench and they get their feet wet if they are not careful. Don't say it doesn't matter, because it does. Am I digressing? Sorry. 4. DRYING AREA: BB wins for having more hair dryers, but does NOT have a clothes spinner, lotion, hair ties, qtips like AT (if that is important to you). 5. PRICE: about the same when you consider the 1:1 time spent w each kid. Meaning BB is slightly more expensive but the kids spend slightly more time w coaches due to smaller ratios (1:3). AT ratio is 1:4. 6. PARKING: BB wins because the parking lot feels safer, is more spread out, and is far less chaotic... probably because you're not having to fight for parking with Trader Joe's patrons. But on the flip side, there isn't a Trader Joe's next door to conveniently grab groceries afterward. 7. STAFF: fun, friendly, energetic 8. TRIAL ASSESSMENT: AT wins because you get a baseline summary of what your kid does well and what they will be working on in the future. So even if you don't know what's going on, it feels like you do. 9. WEEKLY LESSONS/COACHES: tbd 10. RANDOM/TRIVIAL: doesn't matter to me, but I know at some point the kids are going ask where is their dum dum and weekly prize read more
