The most unprofessional business you could encounter, please ask to know all of what you're being charged for before signing. I have taken 3 vehicles to this location and worked with Daniel and Miguel off and on the last 3-4 years. In general, all our conversations have been reasonable, and Daniel has responded well when I present hard questions about costs, their procedures, and calling out anything I perceive as inconsistency. Responses are generally transparent and honest as far as I can tell. Mechanics and shops have bad reputations for many reasons and for many reasons they often deserve it. In the case of Big Apple Automotive, I believe Miguel and Daniel are doing the best they can to find middle ground with their customers while still towing the company line which is their job. The work I've had done there has not failed and I chose to have the work done there after checking some other resources for quotes. They are typically competitive, and we've discussed price gaps when they come up higher than others. Overall, I appreciate their pleasant attitudes and willingness to have conversations without being defensive. Brought in my car for a SMOG test and got a general inspection with it. What followed was a laundry list of other things they saw wrong and wanted to fix. Namely the engine mounts. I was told that one was flat out broke and one was close to breaking. In their diagnostic they listed the three engine mounts. Their part pricing was easily double but probably because of ordering the parts from the dealership so I figured I could buy them myself and save some money. Then I booked a different mechanic to replace them at a cheaper cost. Turns out NONE of the engine mounts were broken or even close to breaking in most cases. Do not take your vehicle here. I knew the problem I had... I needed an alternator. I had priced alternators prior to going and knew it was a 3 1/2 hours labor book time. When Johnny quoted me he quoted me he quoted a bunch of stuff I didn't need and tried to sell some tires they had sitting around even though I still had quite a way to hit the indicator on my tires. He also quoted me a new battery but I had just charged it to bring it to them so I knew it was still taking a charge. When I finally got him to just quote fixing the alternator instead of 3300 worth of what he wanted to charge... he quoted 1300 just to do the alternator. 600 bucks for the part. You can get the part for less than 1/3 what he was trying to charge. I get trying to make a profit but he was trying to sell me things unneeded and way overpriced. Needless to say I bit the bullet for 235 bucks for him to tell me what I told him coming in... I needed an alternator. I'll still get it done cheaper not using Big Ahole Auto. read more

Came in because my sensor light was on for my tires. I was greeted by a mechanic that asked me if I was a doctor because I had on a mask and everyone there was mask free. His comment did not register as disrespect until I sat and thought about it. Anyways $87 to diagnose, No problem! I was told I needed 4 new tire sensors. Checked autozone for the price and they were $130 for 4, No problem! They said I needed 4 new sensors @ $118 per sensor. Why, I asked? Because they needed to be programmed. In total they wanted to charge me nearly $800 bucks for a job and parts that other places were charging $300 for. I was also told from another place that I only needed one sensor. And the entire time I was in the establishment, they continued to whisper to each other about my vehicle. At one point I asked them to speak up. I requested part number to verify the price and they refused to give it to me, lol. I understood at that point what this business was about which is purely MULA!! read more

Took my car in for oil change, air filter, new fob and new battery. asked for diagnostic check to be done, as well. I was given an original estimate of $612.41. They called and said, additional things needed replacing( an alternator and drive belt). Friend who checked my car the day before, said alternator didn't need replacing when he checked my car; no dash light on, signifying problem with alternator. Found out after the fact, they charge $220/hr. for labor. Paid a total of $2,097.88. A friend told me, they way overcharged me and had me call a dealer and Auto Zone, to price cost of parts replaced. Big mark ups on parts. It would have been cheaper, to take my car to a dealer. Expensive lesson. Ask plenty of questions and get other estimates. read more

I went in for a ac service (inspection and freon). I had a coupon from online for 149. during the inspection they found a leaky high pressure fitting. I was told it would be an additional $200 ($350) total price to replace the fitting and recharge the Freon. I looked up the fitting on auto zone and the part was $8. I left paying the $150 and went to auto zone and bought the fitting and 2 cans of r134a for $100. Took two minutes to install the fitting and another 10 to fill the ac system with r134a. i should have just done it myself in the first place. this is what I get for going to a shop for the first time ever. read more

But when we came back they were friendly, efficient, and gave the kids doughnuts...it did seem like we waited longer than other places weve been to. When they were done they told me of some repairs that could be done to the battery and AC, so I assume that's a free type of diagnostic with the smog, and that explains the wait? Be prepared for a culture shock if you bring your car here for service. First, they charge upfront $220 for a Diagnose/Scan Computer Engine Control Concern and somewhere over the rainbow for labor $220 to $250/hr. They also do a 40-point Multi Inspection which is comical. I brought in My 2011 AWD Kia Sorento with 72,000 miles for a check engine light that came on. The paperwork, if you can talk them into giving you a hard copy says that "this diagnosis requires a connection of specialized diagnostic equipment and/or scanners for specific fault. codes and system diagnosis". Since 1996 the OBDII diagnostic port has been required for all cars sold in the US and an OBDII scanner, reader etc. is an instrument that can read the default codes that may have caused your engine light to come on. You can buy this scanner just about anywhere with price depending upon complexity. I have one, the code I got was PO711, and the same as the code they got, which means the transmission temperature gauge is faulty, so much for all their BS about specialized diagnostic equipment it's a simple OBDII scanner. BTW for $220, they came up with the same diagnosis that my device showed and i'm just a Microbiologist so much for their complicated misleading BS quoted above. A new temperature sensor costs $136.40 and Trans Fluid, $64.33. The job takes 2 hours and my original bill was $926. Labor for the two hour job was $506 at $250/hr which I consider to be an exorbitant price. When Im mentioned this they said its because all their mechanics are ASE certified, like most shops. So they give a AAA discount of 10% or up to $70 so they originally discounted for $42.21 and when I mentioned that 10% of 926 is more like $92.60 or the max at $70 the manager got on. his phone to calculate the discount and said that his algorithm was screwing up, I got $75 in the end. Now for their 40 point inspection, they want to R, which I assume is to replace since there is an S which I must assume is service 12 other items, these include motor mounts which has/had a loose bolt they verbally said, coolant exchange, cleaning throttle body, servicing fuel injectors, alignment, left axle seal leaking, coolant housing leaking, replace front struts worn, replace radiator hoses due to age, replace rear shock worn, AC maintenance, cabin air filter, service transaxle (FWD) replace filter and fluid (remember this is an AWD no9t FWD). So let's say I choose to have them do this work what do you think based on their cost to do the above work. The car's value is around 9K and I imagine they would charge several thousand dollars to do what they suggested most of which is superfluous. The car was recently aligned, and struts, shocks and AC are in good working order. All this from a guy who can not determine in his head what 10% of 900 is. I guess you don't need math to be ASE certified. In my opinion if you want to spend a whole bunch on labor bring your car here but if you are tired of being ripped or want a written up front estimnate take your car elsewhere. read more

If I could give this place a 0 I would. I've taking my car to be smogged there in the past and no problem. All of a sudden a guy in the shop was telling me that my car needs a second 02 sensor to pass smog yet my car only has one (I know I've worked on my car). Then they couldn't see my catalytic converter yet I pointed it out to them and still denied me. They resulted my car as tampered and now I've been trying to request paperwork on my car for different parts just to pass it. They were very rude stating "well there's nothing we can do." So basically I'm out of my money for the test and stuck trying to figure out how to prove my car is fine. Oh not to mention my car passed all the other tests! So Big Apple Automotive in VV said my fuel pump went out and I needed a air filter (which I just changed 3 months ago) all of which by their price would be $1800. I called Corona auto shop in vv where I'd normally take my other vehicles. He right away said it can't be pump but even if it is the entire job would have been less than $800. Today after running a check on car and the list of stuff Big Apple said was wrong. Turns out non of what they said was wrong was correct. The entire job with battery change was $200. So this makes me wonder even more about honesty of companies. The funny thing is that they would have charged me for work that not only didn't need to be done but they probably wouldn't have done a darn thing to it and I'd be $1800 in the hole. I took my car in to see what was wrong with it as it was the closest shop to my house and my car wasn't doing too great. I was told it would be $160 for a diagnostic, which after a quick google search I discovered was $10 more expensive than the absolute highest of the normal $50-$150 range. After looking at my car I was told it would cost nearly $3000 dollars to fix. Every where else I called said they would do it for just under $1000. Save your money and take your business elsewhere. They also rolled down my driver side window which comes off the track. To be fair I didn't tell them about the problem but they left it like that and didn't bother rolling it back up and left trash in the passenger seat. I can't speak to the quality of their work as none was done, but I think that laziness speaks for itself. Really there is no way any mechanic's work is good enough to charge nearly triple what every other mechanic I talked to in the area charges. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more
