Big Al's
Viko N.

This store is big with a lots of pets (not just fishes) and pet supplies. The staff are knowledgeable in their respective area. We've been there on and off througout the years and expanding beyond fishes are great. It adds so much more entertainment everytime we go especially for the kids. Everytime we go, there's always excitement and waiting to leave with many things. The fish section downstairs is always humid and it gets unbearable after a while especially during winter with our jackets. But definitely worth to be down down we can probably spend an hour or two looking at all the variety. Always watch their weekly specials, it's more worth it with the special.

BUYER BEWARE: do your research or bring a knowledgeable friend along to guide you in your choices if you are a newbie. Pet's, supplies and entertainment all rolled into one! I usually don't go into a pet/aquarium stores with my hubby, I will wait for him in the car until he's done shopping. I'm so glad he convinced me to go in and check things out. Big Al's is HUGE 6,000 sq ft! On the main floor they have pet supplies, birds, reptiles, and small animals (You can pet the bunnies and they won't run away!). They even have a pet grooming station. Look for the directional signs on the floor that say "Enter the deep" and follow them to the basement where you will be amazed by the enormous fish tank that holds their resident shark and moray eel. If you're there on Tuesday night at 7pm you'll be lucky enough to witness them feeding the shark. They have two artificial waterfall installations that empty into koi ponds. They have rows and rows of fresh water as well as salt water fish, lots of variety to choose from. My hubby has purchased all his fish (tetras and fancy guppies) and all his live aquarium plants from here and his 40 gal tank has been flourishing now for a solid 4 months. The staff are knowledgeable but not the warmest. Make sure to sign up on their website to receive their weekly livestock specials but make sure to go early because they run out of stock quick. You can even trade in your fish (if it gets too big for your tank or if you just don't want it anymore) for 40% off of their retail value. Take your time and look around at all the different kinds of animals in the store, there's lots of interesting things to see. If you get thirsty there's a pop machine in the corner of the tank room. If you get hungry then go outside and grab a hot dog from the hot dog stand on the corner right next to Big Al's. Great place to bring the kiddos!

I got really inspired after my visit to Big Al's Aquarium. No, I am not going to get myself a huge fish tank and start my little pet fish project. Though the colourful tropical fish looks so pretty swimming leisurely in the tanks. Geckos!! I want to have some pet geckos! Big Al's has such a good collection of different type of reptiles. They all looks so healthy and active and such beauties!! They also has tent sale where you can find discontinued items that is at a huge discount. How about a little stroller back pack for my dog for $15?

bought them sick with SBD and i did cure Even though betta fish are low maintenance i suggest them to still take a look and care for them.

I bought bettas from als aquarium... i bought them with SBD. I did a 1 wk treatment. Now all well and active. Though bettas are low maintenance they should still look and care for them. Bettas are unique. I saw a few times bettas are bery sick and floating. One is dead. So sad.

It makes me sad that this Big Al's doesn't have better ratings. When I was setting up my aquarium I came here almost once a week and had good experiences each time. I loved waiting for their weekly flyer to be released to see if anything caught my eye. The quantities on sale are limited though, so try and come earlier in the week if they're having a good deal. This store is *huge* with small pets, reptiles, and aquarium supplies upstairs as well as an enormous fish selection downstairs. IMO they have a good system for fish shopping. You grab a clipboard, wander around and write down which fish you want / the tank # / quantity, and then go wait in line by the counter and they'll grab the fish for you. The lineup is first come first served and gets super busy during peak hours. A lot of the staff here are pretty young but I respect that and it's great to see how passionate they are about aquariums and fish! I've picked up lots of pointers from them along the way. My only complaint is that the plants I brought home unfortunately infested my tank with snails. Pro trip: Come Tuesday at 7:00 to watch them feed the shark! Actually, come at 6:50 because they start at 7 sharp and there are lots of families.

The store was dirty and it smelled. Too many pocket pets and birds for sale. Couldn't even find the live fish. Got what I needed and bailed.

For four years (Aug 2014 to Sep 2018), I cared for a family member's turtle, a red-eared slider. I…read morenever had a reptile before and learning how to care for the turtle took time and research. I realized that I needed help from an aquatics expert, so in September 2015, I searched online and found EverClear Aquatics. For two years, EverClear Aquatics came to my home and cleaned the turtle's aquarium and water filter on a regular schedule. It was the best decision I made and the turtle loved it! They were so helpful, allowing me to enjoy the turtle and not have to worry about cleaning his home. I went through two different canister filters that did not work properly, but EverClear Aquatics came to my rescue when the filter was not working properly. They later recommended a good canister filter to purchase, which I did. It was the best choice I made in a water filter, making my life a lot easier. When I told EverClear Aquatics that I wanted to get a specific piece of equipment, they also recommended one for me and ordered and installed it. EverClear Aquatics is great in so many ways. They are professional, hardworking, reliable, trustworthy, patient, and very good with both people and aquarium life. They are also good in communicating with clients. For example, when scheduling appointments, they often provided me with various possible dates. They also confirmed appointments and always let me know in advance if they had any schedule changes. Eventually, after a couple of years, I asked EverClear Aquatics to teach me how to clean the aquarium and water filter and do water changes myself. They educated me on what to do and spent time answering my questions. They also provided me with various supplies for the water filter, so I didn't have to order them myself. When it came time for me to return the turtle to my family member, EverClear Aquatics did something amazing. They came to my home, dismantled the turtle's aquarium and water filter, took the equipment in their car to the new home, and installed them. I was expecting to receive an invoice, but they did all of this for me free of charge. They also sent me a photo of the turtle in his new home because they knew how much I loved him and wanted him to be happy. It was an incredible gift I did not expect at all. I would highly recommend EverClear Aquatics. They are simply the best.

Since EverClear Aquatics has been maintaining our tank, it's crystal clear water with maintenance only once a month. They even put our small tank on their route even though they normally deal with larger tanks. Can't thank Chris and his team enough. The most professional and absolutely know their fish and tanks!

He has some hard to get species and breeds an number of exotic plecos. I was so excited to see baby zebra plecos (which have become one of my favourite fresh water fish), that I ended spending almost $400 in one stop. Chris also carries a variety of specialty foods and filter materials. I can see myself visiting this place a few times a year. Highly recommend.

When I set up my first aquarium, a more experienced friend cautioned me against the dangers of developing fish elitism, the gradual but inescapable attraction to increasingly rare species. At the time, I laughed and blew him off, convinced I would never catch that bug. The platies and guppies I had picked out from PetSmart were more than good enough for me - I couldn't imagine going out of my way to deliberately seek out more obscure fish. My friend was right, of course. Less than a year after setting up my plebian little platy tank, I was scrutinizing the stock at Big Al's, grumbling that what they had labeled as corydoras julii were *obviously* just the more common corydoras trilineatus, and lamenting the fact that none of the local fish stores seemed to be interested in stocking anything *interesting*. Chris, who runs Next Gen Aquatics, stocks *interesting* fish - interesting, unusual, wonderfully obscure fish. I had been looking for some corydoras hastatus for months to add to my boraras brigittae tank (the platies and guppies having long since been given away to less demanding relatives), but hadn't been able to either find any for sale, or to convince any local stores to stock them. After one text to Chris and a couple of weeks of waiting for import and quarantine, I was able to pick up a full bag of perky, healthy, adorable little tailspot cories, at a very reasonable price. NGA is still a very small business: visits are by appointment only, and the selection is limited by the space available. But the setup is meticulous, all of the fish are healthy (and huge!), and Chris himself is enthusiastic and knowledgeable and quick to respond to inquiries or requests. If, like me, you find yourself wandering discontented through the aisles of your local fish store every week wondering why they never stock any plecos other than bristlenose, or if - like me - you spend hours browsing through species listings on Seriously Fish, fall in love with some obscure little corydoras, then realize nobody local actually carries them... drop Chris a line, and see what he can do for you.
