Went in to this place Sunday Morning 8/4/24 approximately 11:00am. I went to the counter where ammunition is displayed and discovered a handwritten sign stating the the "only person who can sell ammunition is not here, sorry". It had no other info. I asked the young ladies at the counter if someone might be available sometime later in the day, which is an absolutely reasonable question in that situation given the fact that there was no indication on the sign of when a person could buy ammo. The female employee didn't attempt to answer the question, A simple "I don't know" would have been acceptable. They chose to respond by condescendingly saying "It clearly says on the sign that that you cant buy ammo". I responded by saying "I can see that, I'm just asking if you know when I can buy ammo". They repeated with the same response, "it clearly states on the sign right in front of you that you cant buy ammo" as if I cant read. Again I said " I can see that" without asking for any further help of any kind". They repeated the same rude and condescending statement about the "It clearly says on the sign..." this time without me saying or asking anything of them. All of this from the front counter, which requires them to raise their voice to provide this horrible customer. I said "I cant see that sign from outside, so how was I to know this without coming in here?". I actually had to ask "Im just looking to see what caliber you have, is that OK?". They were behaving as if I was an inconvenience even though they never moved a muscle and the counter up front had no customers. If they had said nothing at all this situation would have been without incident, amazing that the employees here have no concept of how to talk to customers. If you don't want to provide courteous and helpful service to customers, them go get a new job where that is not required. I will advise everyone I know not to go to this store. read more

I told her what I needed. I gave her my license. At that time I asked her. How much were the shells that I needed to buy? She was, what do you want, hollow points or regular? Just standard rounds and I said standard around. She's just $29 a box. OMG I could not believe what you said. I've never, ever bought. Target loads for $29 a box for 9 millilater. I said never mind. I don't wish to do any business. I asked her for my ID back. She gave it to me and I says are you gonna dispose of that? What you got in the computer right now with my I. D. She said yes so I stabbed there for a second to wait. I didn't see you ever hit the. Computer to eliminate all my information that somebody can see. I was very descriptive because 2 people sitting under dairy and not helping anybody and waiting for the other lady to come out and then giving me this obnoxious price. I will never go back to big 5 and San Lorenzo again. I called your Alameda store and the price was half of what they were asking for their Knights. Unbelievable I don't recommend this store first of all, the people aren't polite nice. When I walked in a lady sitting there, reading magazine says welcome? I have been shopping at this store for 15 years. It has been my go to hunting, outdoor, birthday and Christmas gift location. I have helped stop theft many times and felt comfortable calling this my store. I have developed a good relationship with staff and manager "Foxy" But today, in there absence, a young Latin manager was extremely rude and disrespectful. I'm done. I will never give them another dime. They are obviously hiring a low caliber staff who do not want to work. So I will vote with my dollars. I will miss Foxy. Big 5 is one of few small carry all sporting good stores that are still left. While they are not the least expensive, Big 5 does have a reasonable selection. This location is located in a small strip mall and parking tends to be tough. The store is smallish as well, making for a tight crowded shopping experience. Due to the tight spaces, floor inventory tends to be crammed in, making finding your size challenging. Check out can be slow at times because there is usually only one person handling it. I will continue to shop here, but only when I know what I want and ready to dig around. read more

No greeting when you walk into location. But they make it noticeable they are watching you as you shop. My last experience I was there to purchase a few items but I really wanted ammunition. As I'm waiting at the counter where it's sold a tall Caucasian male with glasses was standing talking to a women just about his life in general. After about 10min Not once did he acknowledge me and then decided to ask what did I need after the women turned and noticed me. I informed him I would like to purchase 40 caliber ammunition. He said he had two boxes. I told him I would take them both. Then he said do I have id , birth certificate and or passport. I would need to forms of id bc this is now California state law and he does not make up the rules. I told him I only had my drivers license and fire arm certification card. And he said that wasn't good enough. He told me to fill out a reservation card and I could come back on Tuesday when he was there and buy the ammo from him, this was a Friday. After that he continued his conversation with this random lady. I hate playing the race card but I called a different Big 5 and they said that was not true what he requested of me. Terrible Service!!! I was swindled by the worker Allie on Christmas Eve for my puppy inside the store!!! On camera at that. Long story short I wanted to make a kids Christmas better with my high energy puppy. She came off as trustworthy which is my fault never judge a book by its cover. She told me to meet her on Tuesday at her Job for the rest of the payment or she would have my dog Incase something didn't work out at home. I said that's cool. Tuesday comes she called off of work. Didn't leave a message for me or anything so that was a huge red flag for me so I contacted her to let her know the deal was off and I needed my puppy back. She begged for another day. I hesitantly agreed. Come Wed it was like speaking to a whole person. She had the audacity to act like I was bothering her after giving her the time to figure out if my puppy was a good fit for her family. I finally got her to say thru text she'd give my puppy back. She tells me to meet her dude in East Oakland which didn't feel right. So I suggested the McDonald's parking lot and of course no one was there. What really made me write this was her response. Her exact words was my dude came home without a dog so I don't know what to tell you. Wow! I lost it. She said he dropped my puppy off at the closest shelter they wouldn't tell me which one or give me any other information. Come to find out that was a lie too. I've made a police report and I spoke to her manager but I think I need to go above her head because she didn't feel comfortable giving me her last name. They have good deals, but holy crap WHAT A MESS! Every time I go in, it looks like someone flipped the store upside down a couple times. I mean, we don't have hurricanes in CA, but it looks like one hit there. My last outing was for soccer socks for a 4 year old. They had one pair, but they were some really funky color the munchkin didn't want. In the mean time, munchkin and sis were able to find some items on/under the rack with the soccer socks... a skateboard they were attempting to ride while wearing a pair of swim goggles they'd found hanging over the socks. Of course sis had to go potty as she does in every store. The clerk mumbled something about the men's being closed. Do I look like a man to you? Um, no. How about the ladies, genius? So he leads me into "the back," under an unused clothing rack, over some boxes, and tries moving some shit out of the way of the bathroom door. Finally, I told him to give up, I'd go next door to Quiznos where I didn't have to transform into Rubberbando to get through the door. Sketchy service, VERY messy store. Once I stepped in, the guy thought I was under 18, which was correct, and told me to get my parents. Okay that's fine, but, by the time I got back, he was literally running to the other side of the store to avoid answering my questions. By the time someone else came around (10 minutes later), the only reason they came back was because I had walked away. When I came back, he pretended to be busy, and when I asked which AEG he'd recommend, he ignored me and walked away. The store is very cluttered and seems to be disorganized. Trying to find something is nearly impossible. I felt my OCD kicking in and wanting to rearrange the merchandise since it was on the wrong racks and messy. He initiated a inquiry about what I was looking for, asked for my foot size and promptly suggested some shoes that he thought would work. He then went inside the store room and was out with choices. Then I changed the foot size and asked him for another size. He had the best attitude. He said no problem, I'll look to see if we have them, and went inside again to get what I needed.
