I come here frequently after work to check for some items I might need. But every time I come and this Asian manager is there he's always rude and unhelpful. So unprofessional. Today I came again to check for some Pokemon cards 11/06/25 8pm. He said they don't have any. But clearly I see them behind the counter. So I told him and he said it's reserved. I know their policy 2 per person and no pre-orders and no reservations. I don't know what his problem is. I sent my friend after and she got to purchase the Pokémon packs. She was even aloud to get 4 instead of 2. I really don't know what this managers problem is for gate keeping inventory to his advantage. It's not his personal decision. I had never been to Big 5 before, but from their ads, it looked like a West Coast version of Academy Sports. Nope. This was a small store with a hodgepodge of products. There was no selection of women's outdoor wear and only a handful of workout clothes available. There was a clear men's department, then kids' & women's kind of thrown together in the middle. The kicker was after finding some swimsuits to try on, there was a single fitting room for the whole store with huge gaps above and below the door that faced the shopping floor. Not the most comfortable swimsuit trying-on experience. Eek! I had browsed online with their find it in store feature and it looks like stock was low or non-existent at all stores within 100 miles of Los Angeles. Seems to be indicative of this whole chain. At least I'll be visiting Academy country soon. read more

I went in to exchange a pair of kids' water shoes I purchased for my son for a smaller size and they asked to scan my ID, which I thought was weird. I had a receipt and it had been only a few days since my purchase. And it was an even exchange. So I asked why scan my ID? The manager (short, dark hair, medium height, male) who happened to be in the area snapped, "because this could be fraud." Really?? I might be trying to exchange a knocked-off pair of $14.99 kids water shoes for the real $14.99 thing?? Not wanting them to scan my ID (identity theft, anyone?), I said I would show the crediit card I used to purchase it. The manager then yelled at me "it's policy! Jesus Christ!" I kid you not. Ive been coming to this BIG5 for years, not sure if it is under new management, but this will definitely be the last time I shop at any BIG5. The customer experience has deteriorated so much. Maybe this is why so many consumers have turned to Amazon. I would totally be okay with purchasing a new basketball should the wear and tear warrant it but I purchased this second Wilson Jet Pro Ball a little over a month ago and it does not hold air, much like the first one I purchased. They must be defective since this model is not available in the entire store. I have played basketball with Wilson balls, my entire life, rather than try and convince me to purchase an indoor basketball to play outdoors with, the staff should have spent the time trying to make their client happy and understand the back story before jumping to conclusions. Before I even mentioned my back story and how today would make it the second time I needed to return the exact same ball model to their location, the rep I spoke to, Daniel, looked at my ball and said "we don't do returns when the ball is dirty". The store manager, Nolan, later echoed a similar sentiment and was just as short and lacked as much empathy as his staff. This entire staff might need a refresher in customer satisfaction. I will now be contacting Wilson - maybe they will stand behind their product since BIG5 failed to do so. read more

Two stars only because they validate parking. I specifically called the store before driving to K town and asked if they had spin shoes in stock. The girl who answered the phone said they did, and hastily hung up the phone. I then battled traffic and parking to walk in and be told that they do not carry spin shoes. The gentleman who helped me was apologetic and assured me he'd speak to the phone staff, but it was extremely annoying to call ahead to avoid this situation happening and still have it happen. Came in today to buy a folding knife, Geo was extremely helpful and informative about the knives. Helped me pick one out to keep in the car with a seat belt cutter and window breaker. Also showed me a couple that were on sale which I ended up getting one of them. He assured me that if it didn't ring up to the sale price, he would override the price for me to the display price which was courteous for him to offer, although it did ring up at sale price. Last Friday at another big 5 (the one on Crenshaw) they refused to override the sale price that the knife was at when they didn't have their display prices correct, and I asked for a price match a couple times because that was on them and not on me. read more

I've been to this location before to buy shoes, rollerblades, snowboarding pants, etc. Today.. I needed to buy some pants for yoga asap. It was late. They were the closest to where I was at the time. Walked in 15 minutes before closing time. Chose 2 pants and decided to try 'em on before buying. $40 Fila pants for $16.. nice. There was not much to choose from.. :T Asked one of the worker about the dressing room. Her: ask the shoe guy, he has the keys *announcement comes on saying they will close in 10 minutes* I walked towards the shoe section and looked for the "shoe guy" and he was nowhere to be found. Walked around and around looking for the "shoe guy". Ran into a guy so I asked "are you the shoe guy?" Nope. *announcement comes on saying they will close in 5 minutes* Finally found the "shoe guy" and got inside the dressing room. Tried 'em on with the quickness. Paid for it and left. Parking: there's a parking structure in the back of the building and it's free. read more

This Big 5 cracks me up. They have some of the most disorganized items and labels, and some fairly rude workers that seem miserable to be there. I have come here plenty of times to get some sale items, and each time has had slow service, and misplaced items. The most recent visit had be looking for a basketball one sale. I somehow assumed, rather wrongly, that I would be in and out in 5 minutes. I went to get the basketball which was labeled as the sale one and went up to the register which was a 10 minute wait with 3 people in line. All in all I got 3 different types of basketballs before being treated like crap for a worker's mistake. The employee also tried to blame the mislabeled item on people who just pass through the store trying to get the price adjusted for different balls, when she explicitly told me it couldn't be done 5 minutes before that. A 5 minute trip took nearly 40 minutes, and the "have a good day" I received from that employee was one of the most lifeless phrases I have ever heard from in my life. So on 8/17/19 around 3~4pm, i came here to buy hiking shoes. I found what i needed but i couldn't find a pair, it was just a display. So i asked whoever was available to help me. And it was Indian looking guy who helped me. He looked like he didnt want to help, maybe because he was doing something in the storage area. I asked him if there was any of this shoes available in the back with the same size. He told me he will get it for me. It was such a fool of me to trust the customer service here. I went to Yosemite to have a 7 hrs hiking and little did i know the guy who helped me gave me TWO RIGHT SIDES!!!! It's even ridiculous writing this here. And I almost drove 6 hours to Yosemite for nothing... Thank God my friend brought an extra "running shoes" and was able to hike... but I injured myself with the 2 hrs of the hiking and had to hike the rest of the 5 hrs hiking with a limping left leg. And i came to return it today, but didnt even hear an apology. I know it wasnt the cashier's fault but still. Well.. one thing i learned, never trust the customer service here, i learned it the hard way, other people shouldn't P.S. i almost didnt get the refund just because i "tried it on" on a dirt, cuz u know how Yosemite is. read more
