Choice Aire - Residential Furnace Maintenance

    Choice Aire

Choice Aire was a great find when I started looking for a new furnace & AC. Their people are…read moreprofessional and helpful, and they went out of their way to provide fantastic service when I was in a bit of a crunch. I'd give them 6 out of 5 stars if I could. Buying a HVAC system is complicated and expensive, but at least I had a little time to do some research. Here is what I learned: 12 years ago we bought a new HVAC system from a different dealer from the Kent area who maintained our previous furnace. At that time, I didn't know a good HVAC installation from a bad one, nor was I wise enough to do any research. Therefore, we bought what they told us was a "great" new Amana unit (although it proved to be somewhat of a lemon). This time around, I DID do a bunch of research when I learned that the Amana furnace's secondary heat exchanger was beginning to plug up and was failing. All articles I read stressed the same thing: the installation is even more important than the equipment you buy. A poor installation will shorten the lifespan of any HVAC unit, regardless of brand or price. Even before I found out that the not-so-old Amana unit was dying, I had discovered that its installation was done poorly. During a recent renovation, we found that there was a lot of air leaking behind the furnace/AC unit because the installers hadn't sealed the ductwork well. Also, the company that sold us that unit hadn't installed an exterior fresh air intake for the furnace. Later on, even their own service guys told us that their installers should have done so, and it was contributing to some problems. The point I'm making here is that the installation of my previous HVAC system wasn't done well, and after 12 years, the furnace was dying. Now for the good news: A few of my neighbors recommended Carrier: top quality equipment, but expensive. Fortunately I learned that Bryant and Carrier are made by the same company, and that most Bryant systems are IDENTICAL to the Carrier brand, but at lower price; just different nameplates. I even found a website that listed Carrier and Bryant furnace and A/C model numbers side-by-side so you can compare apples to apples. When I looked to see if there was a Bryant dealer anywhere nearby, I found Choice Aire right here in my neighborhood of Ellet. I stopped in at their office and got some excellent information from Jennifer (who's very knowledgeable) at the front desk. As we chatted, owner Eric Morrow returned to the building & offered to come over right then to look at my situation. Eric gave me a VERY good price, and squeezed my installation into their schedule as soon as possible. Also, he pointed out all the installation errors in my old system, and told me exactly how they would correct them. And they DID. Choice Aire saved me a bunch of money on the SAME system I had been planning to buy from Carrier. More importantly, their installation was excellent. They also included a flush mount vent that finishes off those pipes outside... something nobody else even offered. Normally you just get ugly, exposed PVC pipes sticking out of the house. Another important consideration... their sheetmetal work is done beautifully- neat, sealed well, and sturdy; they even sealed existing ductwork. The sheetmetal was cut with precision on a plasma cutter in their shop. In fact- my old company's salesman also gave me a quote to replace the Amana, and bragged that they can do all their sheetmetal work right in the truck with no need to wait for it. Well, their previous worked looked exactly like that- cheap, quickly done, with large flat surfaces that tended to vibrate and boom. Choice Aire did a much more professional job, and I appreciated that Eric himself came to give the installation a final inspection. Furthermore, we are more than happy with the efficient and quiet Bryant furnace.

Our furnace finally died. We called the guy we have been going to for years, and he was on…read morevacation. He did however text us and said he recommends Langani Heating and Air Conditioning. So we had them come out, and low and behold our 20 year old furnace is going through a slow death. We could have repaired it for about $1000 but being so old replacing was the recommendation (which we whole heartedly agreed with). So we got a quick quote and called around to compare. Well long story short these guys had competitive price and a much better warranty than the other companies we called (we were also only interested a Trane unit). They also had zero percent financing which was helpful. Their rep that sold us the unit was knowledgeable and personable (a touch cocky, but only in the fact that he knows his craft). So we had them come out and replace our furnace and air conditioner. Day one: They came out and took the old furnace out put the new one in. Thankfully it is running good we were a bit cold for a while. They are coming back out tomorrow to finish up. I wasn't home before they left, and my fence was wide open, and my storm door was wide open. I wasn't thrilled to see that. Also I picked up a tiny bit of trash from the back yard (shrink wrap and a service sticker). The inside piping I am not really thrilled where they chose to run one of the lines. It comes out in front of the furnace more than I would have liked. My wife said they were nice and worked diligently the whole day. They put a sheet down to walk to the basement. They wore respirators because of the pandemic this year. Day two: They guys came out and buttoned up everything that was agreed upon. The work looks good. Down side I did find a water bottle cap in my new filter but on a quick semi through check everything else seems good. We did have to clean up a bit but that wasn't a big deal. My wife said the guys were real nice, and she was happy. My wife also said they will be back to make sure the air conditioning works this spring. In conclusion I am happy with everything, and I would have them do more work for me if needed. My attitude is probably effected because I have been working 7 days a week for a month. So it gives me a cranky skew. Added: I am very happy with the furnace we bought it has heated the house amazingly! We have never felt the level of comfort that we do now.

I called the big name, highly advertised, HVAC company for a tune up and they told me not to "waste money on any more maintenance, because it's on borrowed time." That company quoted me a price to replace it and that forced me to shop around... and I'm so glad I did. A buddy of mine gave me Bobby's (owner/operator of East End) number. I called him out to my home to get a quote for a new furnace and ac unit. He was on time, polite, and genuine. He took a genuine interest in our life and our needs (became obvious on his next visit 5mths later when he came to upkeep our old unit we almost replaced. He asked for updates on life events we shared on his last visit ) He looked at our set up and was very reassuring as we had more life out of our furnace! He didn't scare us into a sale, he only sold us on himself, his work, and his price ($1k+ cheaper than his competitors) Overall, I recommend East End and Bobby very highly. It's hard to find someone who is honest AND provides exceptional work. Your search stops with East End.

A guy from JJ came out after I had called them for a quote, without them telling me there was a mandatory fee attached. The guy came out, stayed almost 2 hours, which is ridiculous for the job being so small, and then quoted me over $10k for this project. I laughed when he "started" discussing the first 6k of the project and then he added onto it. We live in a well to do neighborhood so it appears they just think you will pay anything, even though I know whereabouts of what estimates like this should cost? 3k they were going to charge was to dig a trench that was already dug, just had stone that needed moved out of the way from a patio being laid. I got two more quotes and BOTH quotes were below $4k total for the same job. I went with a quote that ended up being 3K total, and I moved the stone for the trench myself. It only took me maybe 2 hours or hand digging one afternoon... I am sure JJ&J does quality work, but their quotes are a ridiculous mark up and I want others to be aware of that before going with them. Do your homework.

When I asked him to check if there was a leak of gas from my furnace, he said everything is in good working condition and there are multiple safety measures to prevent any leak. But when I asked how to be sure there is no leak, he said that is a second step to measure with a meter and it will cost another $89. In any event, I didn't find him to be friendly and helpful to rule out my initial complaint. I did not opt for the second step. No second step for diagnosis was informed by Sal earlier. That said, I guess I must give the business a 5-star rating based on the professional scheduling and followup of the appointment. "One swallow doesn't make a summer' or "one bad day" is not a true reflection of the company. I am changing my rating at Sal's text request personally. It's only changed because I can understand Sal's concern as a businessman. He offered me free service in return but I declined it again. He got me wrong completely. My changed rating is only for the professionalism shown by the reception desk and their follow-up. It is not for the changed picture Ron gave that I asked if Ron wanted me to wear a mask. Who would ask that in one's own house? I was wearing my mask thoughout the encounter. As a 65+ year-old, I must be cautious. I don't need a service person's permission to wear a mask inside my house. Unbelievable. But I thought I must clarify to Sal's reply. Thanks Sal for your prompt response. But, isn't that a courteous way to ask ? - "You might want to wear a mask". He saw I was wearing one and he was entering my residence. Yes, I could have insisted but I think that is rude. Secondly, my complaint was "gas leak" and hence, the request to send someone from your company. I am not disputing any diagnosis. I just placed it before you, so it doesn't happen again.. I don't want any money back either. Service was rendered and I accept your company's policy. However, I thank the reception desk for immediately scheduling the appointment the same day. It was highly professional, including the update they followed up with. I commend you for that. Anyways, thanks for your immediate response. Much appreciated
