I've been inside Saco River Yarns several times as I find my way back into the Saco River Dyehouse, and the yarn store is a really cool place. The people who I've met here, especially Lisa, are really friendly and helpful. They carry what seems like a wide variety of different kinds of yarn and other stuff that I can't even guess about, and in the back is a room full of looms, spinning wheels, and other cool stuff. If I was into knitting or making the kinds of scarves found in high-end gift shops, I would be a regular at this store. I've attached some pictures so that people who know more than me can judge for themselves. But remember that since I don't know much, I may have forgotten to get pictures of the really good stuff.

I immediately booked it over as I needed a very specific consultation -- felting with my doggo's fur. I had my samples and the needle I was using and although they didn't have experience with dog fur they immediately diagnosed the problem with my needle not being a true felting needle. I was able to test out their tools and was on my way to felting success. I came back for a few additional supplies and was overjoyed with the results. Their big giant of a sweet dog who runs the shop is also a plus for visiting.

The owner, Mary Jo, was a wealth of needlepoint knowledge and eager to share. I chose a beautiful Maine inspired belt designed by Mary Jo. It is the perfect souvenir of a trip to Maine. Although I live 3 hours away I will return often to shop here and also call and have things sent to me. I left still drooling over all the canvases that are available only here.

I made a phone call to the shop and offered to take photos and email them to get an idea of cost but was turned down. I was told to send my canvases UPS to the shop which I did. A few days later I received a phone call and we discussed the finishing. Then I was told the cost would be a $168 for the simpler of the two ornaments . I said "no thanks" and was charged $20 to return my small canvases. I have had similar ornaments finished for $40. This may be a lovely brick and mortar store but their finishing costs are staggering.

If you're choosing between Michael's in Portsmouth, NH and their Biddeford, ME store... Biddeford…read moreis a clear winner, and worth the drive. (It's close to the I-95 exit, not in downtown Biddeford.) The store's selection of fine art supplies is superb. The staff are tremendously helpful. (Yes, the store can be a little understaffed at times, but if you ask for help at the front register, someone will help you immediately. And they'll go FAR out of their way to help you find exactly what you need, answer questions, share honest opinions, and so on.) While we're staying around York (Maine), we choose the Biddeford store every time. (When we don't, we regret it.) Michael's has become one of the few remaining chain stores carrying a wide range of arts and crafts supplies, including fabrics. That's frustrating, since each store can stock a limited range of products within each niche. However, if you're around southeast Maine - or even in coastal NH - the Biddeford store is the place to shop, especially for fine art supplies. The range of them is impressive, and their sale prices (frequently offered) are unbeatable. Definitely recommended!

She knew exactly where to go and I followed like a lost puppy and In a short time we arrived in the correct location. They were out and she suggested I order online. Now, my visit could have simply ended there, however sensing my disappointment, she suggested an alternative. Perhaps they have something that I could use in the Cricut aisle and off we went again. She immediately identified the Cricut "chalk board" vinyl and I was delighted. You know the saying, "A happy wife, a happy life." With this in mind, why only four stars you ask? Well, their regular prices are a bit on the high end, unless you catch a sale or are lucky enough to have a coupon.
