This is my favorite Beyond Pilates location in SD hands down. I've checked out Point Loma and State & G locations as well, but parking can be tricky downtown for S&G. Kensington is solid because you can usually find street parking pretty easy, depending on the time of day. This studio is clean and gets a ton of natural light. If you go to this location, definitely check out Nihan's classes. Regardless if you're a beginner or advanced, she'll make your time on the reformer worth every penny. I come back every week and I'm always sweating by the end of her class. Bring a towel and water! It's no joke, but love the class and love her as an instructor. She cues well and corrects form if needed. Highly recommend! read more

Reformers need some general maintenance. The springs on several of the reformers need to be inspected as they are making a strained-type of noise during extension/recoil. Classes are good. Instructors work hard and are helpful. read more

Beyond Pilates in Kensington has a fantastic team of instructors, and I've genuinely enjoyed classes with all of them. But I have to say, Jenny is an absolute standout. As a novice male, Pilates felt a little intimidating at first, but Jenny makes everyone feel welcome right away. She starts by asking each person about injuries and adjusts the class accordingly. She demonstrates every movement, keeps everything easy to follow, and even helps you refine your technique. What really makes her classes fun is her energy. She brings a lively, upbeat personality that lifts the whole room, and her sense of humor adds just the right amount of laughter to every class. It honestly helps you push through the toughest moments. And she deserves extra credit for the music alone. Jenny is an excellent DJ, choosing playlists that keep the mood positive, the energy up, and the whole class moving. I found Beyond Pilates in Kensington on Groupon and it was such a good deal for the number of visits you get. I mainly took beginner classes with Anastasiia because of my schedule and personal level, aka never having worked out a day in my life. She was patient, encouraging, and made sure everyone felt supported without rushing anyone. I recently had a baby so its been great to try something new and really start to feel stronger. The studio is clean, bright, and welcoming, and the instructors are respectful of everyone's abilities. I could feel myself getting stronger and more confident with each class, and it was great to have a space that felt challenging but completely doable. Very much enjoy the studio! The instructors vary on skillset & hands on assistance, I would say the class levels are sometimes tricky to distinguish because it more dependent on the teacher. I tried a few different Pilates studios before settling on Beyond Pilates. They have a few different locations but I primarily go to the Kensington location. The classes are all great! I enjoy the variety which includes beginner, intermediate and advanced beginner as well as cardio (jump) and stretch. I actually find the stretch to be especially beneficial after a lot of exercise. The class size is small enough so the instructors can check in. Parking is usually easy enough to find in the neighborhood and I love the fact there are so many different class times. I also had a mishap with going to a wrong class and Brad was gracious and understanding with helping me straighten things out. I like the class packs which offer flexibility in when I attend. Overall, I've had a great experience with the Pilates studio and highly recommend to anyone looking to get into Pilates. Really helps me strengthen l, stretch and isolate core and other muscles - things I basically hate doing on my own. read more

I found Beyond Pilates - Kensington on ClassPass while searching for my reformer pilates fix. There was only street parking available but it was plentiful in the nearby residential neighborhoods. I took a weekday noon class so it was quite a small class. The studio is large and clean, with reformer machines along both walls and an area further in for floor work. The instructor was great, she was a substitute instructor named Marisa (not sure on the spelling). She did a great job teaching to the participants different experience levels and injuries/differences in range of motion. She was so fun and encouraging as an instructor! I feel like I got a thorough workout without overexertion, and left feeling very good and very strong. Some of the equipment is a bit older and the pilates balls were a tad deflated, but nothing was gross and everything felt clean. This is definitely a ClassPass win, and a studio I will return to after my ClassPass trial month ends. read more

I've been a member at BP for over 6 months now and I can't recommend this studio enough, specifically Kristy's class! She has really helped me fall in love with exercising again and is so knowledgeable. She constantly challenges you, or offers modifications when you need them. She takes the time to ask everyone in the class if they have any injuries, and always has a positive and encouraging attitude. I usually don't write reviews, but I've had some time to think about this situation. I was disappointed with my experience due to the way I was treated by Sahar. During an intermediate class, she told me that I should "maybe take beginner classes instead." While I understand that instructors need to assess skill levels, the comment was made in a way that felt dismissive and unnecessarily rude. I was shocked by her comment, especially because I've taken other intermediate classes at this studio with different instructors and it's actually the level that best fits my schedule. As a Pilates instructor, I would expect that if someone is struggling with a movement or needs help, they'd be offered options or corrections to improve their form, not made to feel inadequate or publicly criticized. I'm completely open to constructive feedback and I actually appreciate it, but the delivery matters. In this case, it made me feel horrible rather than supported If this had been my first class at Beyond Pilates, I likely wouldn't have returned. Fortunately, I've had wonderful experiences with other instructors like Anastasia and Stephanie, who are both supportive, professional, and encouraging. It's clear that the studio has some great teachers. I just hope all instructors strive to create that same welcoming environment. read more

I've attended a few classes and it's easy to find parking in the morning, the studio is clean and open, and equipment is nice. The instructors aren't overtly friendly but that's ok with me. Some classes have me shaking but the majority don't make me sweat -- I probably need to go up a level. So, keep that in mind when selecting classes. read more

There are so many amazing instructors and a huge variety of classes to help you reach your fitness or wellness goals. 10/10 recommend for anyone with any sort of back or joint issues, because consistency at the studio will basically heal you! There's a great community of locals who take the classes, and it's easy to make friends if you are consistent. My favorite instructors are Yadira, Alyssa, Lindsey, Margeurite and Wendi A. Love BASI Pilates in Kensington and LOVE that they are on ClassPass. I recently returned after a long hiatus off ClassPass. I was happy to find a good quality Pilates studio. They do a good job not booking the entire studio (not sure if this is on purpose or accident) but there has always been an open reformer in between myself and the other person. Either way much appreciated! Doug is awesome, I love his attitude and the energy he brings to the class. I did have a sub one, it was a woman, and I didnt for her experince. The classes I take are all beginner. However, the level is usually stepped up a bit, you can slow or keep up just as recommended by the instructors. read more

I've been trying to get back into a regular Pilates routine and happened to take one of Kristy Bauer's classes at the Kensington studio. The best!! Kristy's genuine, kind ways made me very comfortable in class. She treats everyone with the same warmth which creates an inclusive, friendly vibe and makes it easy for the students to get to know each other. She focuses on her teaching throughout the class and keeps an eye on our form, gently making corrections as needed. Sadly, I've had some discouraging classes over the years where instructors focus on their favorite students and/or prattle on through class about themselves. Kristy doesn't do any of that. I came to Beyond Pilates as a complete pilates noob. My wife absolutely loves the classes, and attends religiously. As such, she thought it would be fun for us to start doing them together. "Come on, baby, I'm used to cycling 1,000 miles per month, and doing mixed martial arts. What's pilates gonna do for me?" What's pilates gonna do for me? Kick my a$$ is what it's gonna do. I regret to say that I'm the guy who stops halfway through any given set to rest, while everyone else is still going strong! If we were antelope, I'm the sickly weak one that would have been left behind to get eaten by the lions long ago! Kristy, the instructor, is phenomenal. She's a TON OF FUN. And even though the class starts at some ungodly hour, I look forward to her cheery demeanor, her jokes, and even to the getting of my butt kicked. In fact, in my first jump class, we discovered that I suffer from motion sickness! Kristy took the time to jerry-rig a setup such that I could do the workout without the room spinning! (Now that I think about it, maybe she didn't do it out of the kindness of her heart, but more rather to not have to deal with potential projectile vomit.) Anyway, Beyond Pilates is great, Kristy is phenomenal, and I would recommend the studio to anyone and everyone... even macho jerks like myself who erroneously thought they were in shape, until I learned better! read more

I took a class a few weeks back with ClassPass. Studio was clean and class itself was okay. I don't think the instructor (Kristy) is suited for a beginner class. I have been to other beginner classes, both here and other studios, and I take correction and instruction well. However, it felt like there was an heightened level of frustration and annoyance in her tone/vibe. It made me very uncomfortable and kind put me in a frozen mindset. I should have left but I tried to stick it out. Once the class ended, I left and started tearing up when I walked back to my car. and I don't think anyone should feel like that after a fitness class. I'll probably come back because the other instructor I went to was nice but I plan on definitely avoiding this instructor again. read more

I've been a member here for years off and on, have enjoyed the studio and found the customer service responsive when I've needed it. In the last month or so, they've raised their rates (fine,) instituted a fee for renewing a membership by credit card (ok,) and now it looks like they've changed apps. None of this would necessarily be a problem, except that I've been unable to find a way to renew my membership at the agreed upon fee, change the payment method to avoid the 4% cc charge, and gotten no response to multiple emails. The only way I found out they changed their scheduling app is by googling, and I still can't schedule because my membership pass appears to still be on MINDBODY, which no longer works with them. It seems like the only way I'm likely to get a response is by giving a bad yelp review. Sorry, but not sure how else to proceed! read more

Lucy Fox worst experience in my entire work out career. After circling the neighborhood several times I parked in the last open instructor parking space. When I entered the studio she confronted the members about who was parked in the spot. I stated it was myself and she rudely told me to get out of the spot in front of other members and took my name down as if she was threatening to tell on me. This is far from ACCEPTABLE. There is an appropriate way to handle the situation politely. Her attitude and demeanor was unacceptable and truthfully she owes me an apology. Luckily the owner swiftly took action and apologized on her behalf. He even went out of his way to credit my class and send me a quick follow up thanking me for my membership. If your considering this studio I would hands take Yadira, Daisy and Merril. They are professional, polite, and committed to the experience and workout. This is an important reminder to be kind to others! read more

I recently moved to the neighborhood and wanted to get back into Pilates after a long break off (think: years). I started going to this studio with a friend of mine and now we are hooked! Pilates has always been one of my favorite forms of exercise, and I am looking to take care of my body more as well as tone up for my upcoming wedding! This studio is clean, well maintained and has great instructors. Although I am not a complete Pilates newbie, I have been taking the Beginner classes as it's been a long time since I've worked out consistently. I find that the instructors at BASI take the time to thoroughly explain things, are patient and kind- but also motivating and always give you a good workout! I always feel better the days that I do Pilates. I highly recommend checking out this studio! If you are a beginner, you will love Doug or Kristy's Beginner Equipment classes. This studio would be nice if the owner "Brad" wasn't rude for people voicing their opinion. Went when class pass points were average 5-6 points. Later upped up 9 points? No thanks! Not the only Pilates place in San Diego with a stank attitude like that... I recommend elsewhere. Many places opened after COVID. How about we move on from that played out excuse. This is by far the best Pilates studio around .I have been taking pilates for many years . Took some breaks over a period of my life time to tend to familal obligations. All the instructors are top notch, caring and challenge you to become your best physically , to strive for good form and very encouraging no matter what stage of pilates you are at. I've currently been taking Biancas class and WOW, WOW!! Bianca is an amazing instructor. I feel better after each class I take from her. My strength and mobility are improving as well. I had a medical emergency months ago and my doctor told me I wasn't cleared to do Pilates. I was paying a monthly membership and forgot to put a hold on it till I was given the green light. My doctor finally said I can start doing Pilates and I reached out to the owner, Brad, to see if I could change to the minimum monthly classes to start and explained why I haven't been attending due to my health. Brad saw that I've been paying for months and haven't been going and he called me and we chatted about life and he gave me 100 classes for FREE! I have to tell ya, I teared up a bit with joy because Pilates really has done wonders for me and I love the Kensington studio and all the teachers and I've missed going so much!
