I reached out to multiple lactation consultants as I was desperate to continue breastfeeding my daughter, and Karissa was a godsend! She not only answered my desperate call on a weekend, she was in constant contact to ensure things were going appropriately. And when they didn't, she made sure she did all she could to get us on the right track. This meant that she texted me, emailed me as well as made additional home visits to follow-up. She realized I needed to go by to have an exam and imaging by my OB as well as recognizing a previously undiagnosed tongue-tie in my daughter. As a result, the speech therapist she referred by daughter to was also amazing (as in, spent over an hour at each visit discussing diagnosis and treatment options). Today, my daughter is 7 months old and is happily breast feeding. I have been able to build up a supply and have done so without pain or complications. It is truly a miracle that both of us are where we are today, and I truly owe all of this to having been treated by Karissa.

We were unable to get our first baby to breastfeed for various reasons, but we were also late getting to Ann (baby was 2 months) by which time our baby was way too comfortable with the bottle. With our second baby, however, we got to Ann almost as soon as we got out of the hospital, if only to ensure that the latch and everything else looked good. Ann is very knowledgeable, honest and patient, like reviewers before me have already stated. BF'ing is very stressful during the early days, for both mother and child. We often find ourselves trying to find answers to everything - why did the baby gag, why is the baby falling asleep, is he getting anything, etc. Ann gave us every answer patiently, helped us out with various alternatives, whether it be in the form of website links, a book she loaned us, nipple shields, supplementing systems (which are very very competitively priced btw), referrals to some great doctors - to keep us going and not give up. She kept track of our progress almost on a daily basis through emails and text. We finally got it right and my wife now exclusively breastfeeds our baby. Breast feeding is definitely the most natural way to feed a baby, like all that literature online tells you. But, as we have found out twice now, and as Ann undoubtedly wil tel you, it is not the easiest thing to kick start. It is a learning experience for both baby and mom, and having someone so committed to the success of this effort as Ann on your side is a big plus. :)

He wouldn't latch and when he did it was incredibly painful. I spent 12 hours with other lactation consultants, I joined a breastfeeding support group, I read everything I could get my hands on about breastfeeding and nothing helped. The pain became so bad that I switched to exclusive pumping instead. Then I found Dr. Chetwynd when my son was around 12 weeks, I sent her an email asking if it was too late for us and explaining all of the the health and latching issues we had struggled with. I can't recommend Victoria highly enough for both lactation and postpartum support. As a postpartum…read moredoula, she is extremely communicative and prompt. She's warm and fun, and I had no trouble trusting her with my brand new baby because she is such an obvious professional. She advised us on baby care, gear, and cloth diapering and cooked some really wonderful meals. I think the best part of having a postpartum doula in to help after you have a baby (as opposed to family) is that they know TONS about newborns and recovering postpartum, but they aren't attached to their opinions like your mother-in-law would be. Victoria is like your super-knowledgeable yet judgement-free BFF. In terms of breastfeeding support, Victoria is not a militant, exclusive breastfeeding only type lactation consultant (like some you might have met). Her goal is to support you in reaching your breastfeeding goals, whatever they may be. As a result, she really listened to me and asked intuitive questions to discern what was and wasn't working as I tried to breastfeed my first baby. As she helped me solve early breastfeeding struggles and new ones emerged, she offered concrete strategies that were tailored to my specific issues (big baby, cracked nipples, oversupply). She empowered and guided me to find the latch that worked best for me and my baby. I came out of that really tough first month or so with way more confidence that I had going in. My baby and I continue to have a great breastfeeding relationship, and I credit that to Victoria.

I took a lactation class with her, got in-hospital lactation support right after the birth, and she worked with me for weeks afterward as I got the hang of nursing my baby. Thanks to Victoria, I gained confidence in myself and my body's ability to produce milk for my baby *and* practical skills. Since breastfeeding is a journey, not a destination, she's my #1 resource should any other lactation challenges come up!

She asked for things, helped advocate for us and held my legs while I pushed for three hours! I couldn't imagine not having her there. She took pressure off my husband and made a very, potentially, stressful experience way better. I also enjoyed the post birth visit - she played with my son and shared some of her birth experiences - it made me feel better about my stresses., I also had a massage shortly after the birth and a stomach wrap.
