Matt brought my guitar and ukelele from "Rustic Grime" to Masterpiece!…read more I brought my 20-year-old Walden Natura D550 and a vintage 1953 ukulele to Matt, and the results are honestly shocking. The '53 uke was in rough shape--old, rustic, and covered in decades of grime. Matt transformed it completely. He finely detailed the body until it was shining like a mantle piece, fixed the tuners, and recommended Nylgut strings that make it sound incredible. It went from a dusty relic to a daily player that I can't put down. For my Walden guitar, Matt performed "wild work." The action was high and the strings were dead, but he used a "cold clamp" technique on the neck and hand-carved a perfect unbleached bone saddle. He even recommended a spectacular cocobolo bridge to match the guitar's aesthetic and tone. Both instruments came back sounding "shockingly fantastic." If you have an instrument that has lost its "soul" or just needs expert engineering to sing again, Matt is the man to see. A true master of his craft and a total professional.

Queens Guitar School has proven to be an outstanding choice for our 7 yr old daughter, Charlie, to…read morebegin learning guitar. She recently received a guitar-ukulele "guitalele" as a gift. We were eager to have her learn the basics so she could feel comfortable playing at home or in public. After a quick Google search and a phone call to JoEllen, their very polite office manager, she was easily set up in her first individual session with Vinny. The school's Astoria location is pretty convenient being a couple blocks away from 31st St and Broadway, Q102+Q104 bus routes and N/W train nearby. While they do offer beginner classes, we chose the private one-on-one weekly sessions, that last 30 min. We believed this would help lessen any nerves our "sometimes shy" daughter would have playing an instrument in front of ppl for the first time. They also have guitars on standby for free in case you forget to bring your own. You can tell from when you walk in that the staff is happy to see you and all the instructors are so friendly and welcoming. Vinny has been great from the start, everything you would want in a children's instructor. He was very patient, encouraging, and informative. You are encouraged to sit in on the private lesson, which we found very helpful so you can see how each lesson builds on the last and to see the growth/learning first hand. He explained everything from how to hold the guitar, posture, the string order, to the importance of listening. Vinny is a BIG advocate of using the "Suzuki Method" and it shows during his lessons. He constantly stresses how important it is listen to the music and develop recognition of sounds and notes to memory. Vinny is personable and always sharing his laughs and smiles. His passion to helping our daughter and all his students develop their skills is obvious, genuine, and very much appreciated. Charlie has made alot of improvement over the last year. She's able to play on her own modestly, and she's able to self correct while she practices at home. She also participated last Fall in one of the school's in-house concerts. We believe Vinny and Queens Guitar School are a big reason for her growth. If you are looking for great environment to learn an instrument (we've seen some keyboard and drums lessons), please do yourself a favor and check them and Vinny out!!!
