BevMo Van Ness really deserves ten stars. Every time (every single time) I visit, the staff, from the security guard to the floor staff to the cashiers, are always friendly. They are proactively helpful, they're genuine, they're always smiling. I cannot say enough nice things about the people working here. Prices are good, though you can find some things cheaper at Trader Joe's. The 5-cent wine sale (buy one and get the second bottle for 5 cents) is great, but you ought to do your research first, because some of the wines aren't as great as others. When you find one you love, however, you've really scored a great deal. If you're ordering online for pickup, there is the chance that an unavailable item is listed as available. This happened to me last time with a bottle of wine. The employee went the extra mile to personally check to make sure and subsequently refund me, but it was a bit disappointing. Every time I place an order online, they always can't find it (or what was in stock when ordered is OOS when you get there) once I go to the store. They really need a new inventory system, as it hasn't worked for at least the past decade. Jeff Bezos, if your reading this, please buy this chain and save it from itself! This review is for the Torrance CA store. I reserved a keg for my son's birthday. When we go there we had to ask about a tap. "no we don't rent those anymore, but we sell them" was the answer. Then they said they didn't have any, but after looking found "the last used one" in the store, which they sold us to us for bargain basement price of 60. First, it's just plain ridiculous to rent kegs but not make available taps. I said as much to the manager, who shrugged and muttered something about the virus. Which i assume means that they don't want to take risk around people handling the tap. But then he handed us the used tap with his own ungloved hands, so that explanation felt a bit thin. I pushed back to the "manager", who wasn't rude, but basically didn't give a hoot about the unfairness of the situation, or making me a satisfied customer. I've gone into this location now many times as a customer and as a DoorDash driver their customer service is not customer service their employees don't smile they don't greet you. They tell you not to touch anything on the shelf without talking to them then they say go look on the shelf. This is ridiculous back in my day. I wouldn't have a job if I treated people like that if you don't like your job, get another one. This location sucks with customer service. They have the product but the customer service sucks and I have sworn never to step foot in that store again as a driver or as a customer. They have another one out on Geary at Parker. I always see BevMo on Van Ness. I guess if you like alcohol in large quantities, this is a place to go...other than Costco. I don't ever see too many people in this store. If they had a lot of juice or soda for sale, I might like this place, but it's mostly alcohol. Does Instacart service BevMo? It's like Smart and Final. So I have to start off by saying that this is a 3-star review, reluctantly. I have been coming to the BevMo Friday night wine tasting for 3 years and it is one of the highlights of living in SF. I know-crazy...living in SF and I choose to go to BevMo to hang. Well, James, who runs the weekly event is one of the most personable people and is super knowledgeable about wine. You could always count on him to give you a solid and HONEST recommendation. I have also met people and formed amazing friendships with some of the "BevMo regulars". Tonight, I walked in to a nearly empty event which was the first surprise. Then, I was poured wine in a tiny little shot-glass sized plastic cup. Not a plastic wine glass, not the regular wine glasses that we had been enjoying for years. So first, we are conditioned to "shoot" anything in a shot glass; not something that is suggested when sampling wines. Second, there is no swirling or smelling possible with such a small cup, to smell the bouquet and see the legs. If BevMo truly wanted to provide an experience for us to taste and hopefully purchase their wines, they should do so in the most supportive way. I just felt like I was in a frat-house, shooting random wine shots. I am told that this change was due to a new manager. Well, new manager-in the cost cutting efforts, you have lost long-term regular customers who spend hundreds of dollars every time they come in for wine night. I have my personal favorites and every time I look here, they are either "out" or prices are exorbitantly more than the local chain supermarkets, like 40-50% more. Since G&Ts are super easy to make at home, this bottle fulfills that need (basically, one as a nightcap everyday and twice on Sunday #kidding!) and I stay away from the crappy high fructose corn syrup filled tonic water and splurged for Fever Tree Tonic ($7.99, 4 pk at 6.8 oz each) Also, since we're adults now, we secured proper old fashioned glasses to start our bar ware collection. I placed a huge online order for a company party, which was due to be delivered to the venue between 4pm and 5pm. I gave them phone numbers to call, should there be any issue. At 5pm there was no sign of the delivery and so I called BevMo Van Ness for an ETA. I was put on hold for 6 or 7 minutes and then told that the delivery driver hadn't picked it up yet. After some back and forth where ultimately the BevMo rep and I disagreed about whether BevMo should have contacted me when there was going to be a delay in delivering the order, I was informed the order would get there by 6pm. In the meantime, I had to figure out something to serve early guests. At 5.50pm, I get a call from a center in Dallas, and the rep tells me that the driver is finishing up another order and will go to pick up mine shortly - it should be there by 7pm. That rep (nothing to do with BevMo) was very nice and apologetic but, unfortunately, that was way too late and I had to cancel the whole order and grab whatever I could from a liquor store nearby. I pulled it off, with no help, only stress, from BevMo. Definitely just a place to pick up a few bottles of something on the cheap and absolutely not a place to be relied upon for anything important. read more

"I don't know why it's not accepting it" does not solve my problem. As a member, I find this unacceptable. The whole point of membership is to avail of coupons. Will be cancelling pronto. Worst, though is the checkout process which fails a perfectly good credit card an average of 4 times before accepting it, IF it ever does. AND it requires re-entry every time. I have witnessed an associate on the floor that sits in the cigar shop scold customers multiple times and every time I've been in the store the past couple of times! He's extremely rude and I cannot believe the language he uses with paying customers. It's insane! He is extremely particular about where the line starts and where someone should stand and if you don't follow his instructions to the inch he insults you. Biggest shout out in the world to their amazing employee Dianna, who helped up coordinate a huge wedding delivery order. We went and met with Dianna in person, talked through how many people were going to be at the wedding, what types of food there would be, and what kinds of cocktails we wanted to serve. She walked us step by step through the whole store, helped us choose which brands made the most sense in terms of quality bang for your buck, and helped us curate our drink order. From there, she emailed us the invoice and got all the delivery details, and basically made it one of the easiest steps for our wedding. We did all this about two weeks out from the event, and all the drinks arrived day-of perfectly, exactly the amounts we ordered. If you have a huge event and need alcohol, definitely call and ask to speak with Dianna during the week before 2 PM, she will take care to make sure everything is perfect! ALSO, Bevmo has this like 5 cent deal on a lot of their drinks, so the team members there helped us choose tasty wines that were also on sale, effectively cutting the price in half. read more

When I first set my eyes on BevMo, all I could do was roll them. I couldn't imagine taking a place called "BevMo" seriously. Not only was the name cheesy, but the place looked as chain-rific as Walgreens just down the street. The store was as quiet as a library, I figured it to be some generic alcohol outlet where the employees were bored and unmotivated. I couldn't have been more wrong. It was clear I had never been to BevMo, because this place was awesome. The prices are mind bogglingly low here and I completely underestimated all of their stealthy inventory of some of the world's most popular liquors (and quite a few independent brands) were available for way less than the usual retail. A full bottle of Captain Morgan for $13? 750ml of Grey Goose for less than $30? Even Patron Cafe, a premium top shelf liquor flavor was $22. They were giving me a good lowdown of cocktails and mixers and "bang for your buck" spirits. In some ways, I know this is like a Walmart for alcohol. A chain offering rock bottom prices with a stellar inventory. Not ever having shopped at a store like this before has lead to a good initial impression and it's become go-to spot whenever I'm getting liquor in bulk or on the cheap while hanging out in SF. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want one where I live. I'd also be kidding myself if I wish this and In-N-Out would just start expanding beyond the west already. Matt just got off work and walk in to newest Bev-Mo on Van Ness to shop for a birthday gift for wife. And then all of a sudden, he received a discourteous entrance greeting by an observing employee. E: "Excuse me; you need to leave your bag at the counter!" Matt checking out the Vodka section, which is located on the right side of the store. Matt replied, "I'm just checking out the price of the Grey Goose Vodka!" Bev-mo associate responded, "You still need to leave your bag at the counter." Besides wine, they also have a surprisingly good section for quality chocolates. They also have a really good selection of appetizer items. Not only do you need an ID for age-restricted items (as expected), you need it for literally anything. This BevMo is just around the corner from my apartment so it's my goto place for beverages and the occasional snack. It's huge and the range of products is amazing. I never fail to find what I'm looking for or a good bargain. The 5 cent sales are also great to take advantage of and I happily try different wines this way without feeling like I'm risking $10+ for something that I might not like. I love picking up extra snacks while I'm choosing beverages. There's a range of foods that would cover most everyone's tastes: cheese, deli meats, candy, nuts, chips, etc. Add in the various bar supplies such as glasses, bottle openers, spouts, shot glasses and shakers, you can easily outfit your own personal bar and have everything you need for a party (except for friends, you can't buy those here). Staff is helpful and courteous and I've had no problems with finding someone who can direct me to what I need or explain/educate me on something new. I've ordered online several times for pickup and always have had no problems with my order being ready (although sometimes they can't find it amid the stacks of bags/boxes that are other pickup orders, they should have a slightly better system for that). read more

Unless your convenient store or local grocery store changes out their beer often, you'll get to a point where you've probably tried all the beers you're interested in. This is when you come to BevMo to try out something new and for a good price. Speaking of price, you can also get some really good deals if you're a wine drinker. Several times a year, BevMo has a .5 cent wine deal (basically buy 1 get 1 free.) And even though I hate signing up to be a member at every store, the BevMo club membership generally pays off with the offers they send you. It may not be as easy to get to as those neighborhood convenience stores, but the selection more than makes up for the trek. Even though I'm closer to the Geary location, I always find better stuff at Van Ness. Also, if you're coming by car, there's a garage off Sutter that is quite spacious and way easier to drive in and out of then the Geary location. read more
