The selection of the flavors was vast--I got a scoop of the Dubai chocolate flavor which was delicious. I loved the added kadayif pieces! My mom got the raspberry which was refreshing and perfectly sweet, yet still creamy. It was a pricey at $6 a scoop but the quality of the speciality ice-cream speaks for itself. Tucked inside the Asbury Park Convention Hall (right near the entrance) is Betty's Icebox (they also have a truck on the other side of the building in the food truck area). Betty's has several cool confections like ice pops and (my favorite) shaved ice! They also have fresh popped popcorn (complete with olive oil and seasonings). Betty's is a small shop with a long counter where you order and where the staff is stationed. The other side has a small counter space but it's mostly taken up by products like candy. Seating is mostly set up outside the shop in a partly fenced off area. On this particular visit I picked up some popcorn and seasoned it with olive oil and garlic salt. It was really yummy and man, you really can't beat fresh popped! The feature item for me was the shaved ice which is freshly made to order. I ordered a lime and watermelon flavor combination. I am trying to watch my sugar intake so I ordered a small but *holy cow* the thing was *huge*! It was easily enough for two people to share and it made for a beautiful serving. The shaved ice is served in a cup that then sits inside holes carved into the tables outside. It's a fantastic way to keep the treat stable without having to use a gigantic bowl. The watermelon/lime combination was delicious but it does get really sweet towards the bottom where the syrup condenses. No joke, you could easily take the remaining syrup and add it to a seltzer to make a soda! I really enjoyed Betty's and look forward to visiting again in the future! read more

The only downside with the serving dish/choices were pretty, but pretty darn impractical. While I love how paper straws are better for the environment, they get soggy and lose all function quickly. The wooden spoon was too tiny to be useful and she struggled to use it and soon abandoned it. Finally, the plastic cup didn't hold the liquid in and the slightest tip sent all the lemonade straight down her shirt. Overall, I hope Betty's rethinks the packaging and keeps its tasty recipes. I go Asbury Park very often but yesterday was the first time I tried Betty's because I had my two young grandsons with me. Honestly, I'm actually not the biggest shaved ice fan. I like it, but I never really crave it or go out of my way to find some, but my friend I was with wanted to try and I was intrigued by the "crowned best shaved ice in the country by the Food Network" sign so why not? This was our first time there after an afternoon at the beach. The options are fantastic. The flavor was delicious! I was so impressed by this vegan gelato. There were 6 of us and other flavors had were piña colada, Birthday cake, strawberry pop tart, oatmeal and cookies and peanut butter and pretzels. They were all outstanding. My sister and her family drove from Northern NJ all the way to Asbury Park not to go to the beach but to go to Betty's for shaved ice. That says more about the place than any review I can write. Granted, $5 for some frozen water and syrup isn't cheap but damn is it good. I loved my root beer/ vanilla ice so much that I considered going back for seconds. Yeah, it was that awesome. Ice is pulverized almost to the consistency of cotton candy and available in one or a mixture of many different flavors. They also have candy and some other stuff but that's not why you go there. I have been writing reviews on YELP for many years and I believe this is my first semi-unflattering review. I did not sample anything else in the shop except the shave ice, therefore that is the only item I can review. Perhaps the customers wandering into your store have never had "real" shave ice and are just expecting a large snow cone. Snow cones are made with crushed rather than shaved ice. Shave ice should appear "snow-like". The syrup should be absorbed into it, not melt it. I absolutely love shave ice.....my fondness started in Hawaii years ago and I have had shave ice several times on each of four of the Hawaiian islands and never has it been remotely what I was served today in Betty's Icebox. I am so sorry to say this, but my dish of shave ice resembled a puddle of melted ice in the few minutes it took me to bring it to my outdoor table. The top of it tumbled right off and the syrup was running off the table and onto the floor! It was not packed down properly and there was so much syrup that the entire dish of ice melted into an overly sweet liquid before I was half way through! The cost is a reasonable $7 for a large, but it was a total disappointment. I brought the large full container of liquid inside and showed the counter person. I tried to explain my disappointment. She simply took it from me, smiled and said, "Sorry". I think the idea of this shop is fabulous and I truly hope your business is successful. I am taking the time to write this review, because I believe the idea is fabulous and I am hoping the business is successful. With some simple instruction in how to shave the ice properly into a snow like texture and pack it down, there would be lines out the door. Shave ice should not be an "icy" snow cone texture. The Hawaiian shave ice, once it is packed down properly, gets holes poked with a thin straw-like utensil and that is where the syrup gets poured and absorbed. Again, the texture of shave ice should be smooth-not crunchy. It should be smooth to the last spoonful. The shave ice should not be over saturated with the syrup- this will melt it into a puddle. Traditionally a scoop of ice cream is placed in the bottom of the cup and sweetened condensed milk is drizzled over the top and is often called a "snow cap". Betty's Icebox was out of both the ice cream and the condensed milk yesterday when I was there. It was the middle of a weekday afternoon. I am hoping Betty's Icebox makes some changes and is very successful going forward. When I get back to Asbury again I will give this another try. I will stop in and order a large shave ice with ice cream and a snow cap......then I will take the time to write another review- hoping it will be a five star one!!!
