At the recommendation of the man at the front desk of my hotel, I came to Betty's Cafe for breakfast while in town. When I arrived, I noticed that a swarm of people all converged on the restaurant at the same time-they went from nearly empty to max capacity. I was impressed with how quickly the staff jumped into place. Understandably, there was a pretty good wait. When my food finally came out, it was not quite what I ordered, but I didn't want to be a bother so I ate it anyway. The potatoes are unusual-not the traditional hashbrowns or breakfast potatoes that I have seen elsewhere. While camping up at Flaming Gorge we decided to take a trip into Vernal and grab some lunch while we were there. Based on reviews we ended up at Betty's Cafe, which was decent, but honestly nothing that was spectacular. The staff was super polite and everything was great on that front, but the food and time to receive our food was meh. I understand that they're not a fast food place, and they specifically state they cook everything to order, but still 45-60 min is still a bit excessive of a wait time when it is not overly busy. I do not recall what everyone else ordered, but I got the chicken sandwich and it was decent, however I didn't know or realize that it didn't come with any type of dressing, so it was on the dry side. Sure, I could have asked for some, but at this point in time it was easier to do without. Overall I am not sure that I'd say this is a place you have to try. read more

I would love to give you 5 stars, but all 4 of us had cold breakfasts. Not one single thing hit the table warm. Service was pleasant and relatively quick. It is decently clean. But little things like having to get up and get the salt and pepper and sweetener ourselves, not having everyone's breakfast complete (forgot the eggs and sausage to go with the French toast. The burger is a smaller patty than I have had but it was super flavorful and despite looking like there was more veggies and bun, the burger complimented it very well! The fries are fresh. I know Utah taste pallets usually don't like much seasoning but sprinkle some salt on there and they are delicious! Service was on point. You can tell there is a community mindset and attentive attitude without being to intrusive to your meal. Cleanliness was exceptional. Massive portions and delicious waffles. But you do have to be prepared to be patient. Some of the staff is a little green. Locals will be served before you -- so just set your expectations. Vernal, Utah is a tiny burg situated in the UFO-and-paranormal Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah. I was there for a UFO conference and to sneak up on the nearby Skinwalker Ranch. Would I return? I might actually consider heading back to spend a day petroglyph-hunting and yes, next time I'd give the flapjacks a try. read more

We arrived around 12:30pm on a Sunday and the place was jam packed! Luckily they were able to seat us outside. We ordered two BLT's, a couple of Bacon Cheeseburgers, a #6 Combo (short stack of pancakes with bacon and one egg and a homemade biscuit...which were buttery soft and delish especially with their raspberry jam!), and a #9 Combo (bacon, one egg, hash browns and biscuit). Why can't I give this 10 stars like it deserves???? When searching true breakfast options in Vernal, this was one of the only ones that came up. I was very intrigued by the reviews, and I'm so glad to have stopped in. The restaurant is located in an old Arctic Circle building from the early 90s, so it is extremely cozy. There are tables all around three walls, and a row down the middle. We were greeted when we entered and told we could seat ourselves. Almost immediately after we chose a table, we were greeted by our server. There is a disclaimer on the menu that they emphasize quality over speed, and I was not bothered by this at all. I am happy to wait if the meal is worth it. And boy was it!!!! I order Betty's Skillet which is a pork chop on a bed of fried potatoes all smothered with gravy. It comes with a gigantic biscuit, and because I knew I would not be back soon, I also ordered a pancake. The pork chop was cooked to perfection, and the potatoes rivaled those my Mother used to make when I was growing up. I ordered scrambled eggs which were cooked perfectly. They had onion in them for extra flavor, and they included a side of spicy salsa that just hit the spot.. The biscuit was more than I could eat after the pancake, so I boxed it to go and had it later in the day as a snack on my drive to Las Vegas. It came with a side of homemade raspberry jam, and even though I don't like raspberry, it was high quality delicious. The pancake was very fluffy and a nice complement to the meal. Next time I would just order the pancake as the option and not have the biscuit, but I'm glad I tried both. My companion has the all meat omelet, and it was just as tasty as my special. I cannot say enough good things about Betty's Cafe! If you are fortunate to live in Vernal, you are probably not eating there enough. So we were road tripping today and wanted some lunch and pulled into Betty's because it just sounded interesting and looked like a small local joint. The short review is: Fantastic local Home Made fare! The rest of the story is we started by being seated by Ryan who turned out to be an absolutely wonderful ambassador for not only his grandma Betty (for whom the place is named) but also the the city of Vernal! My wife didn't know what to order so Ryan answered all her questions and she settled on the ham and bean soup and a scone ( which they make homemade in-house every day) and I had a breakfast item of bacon, fried potatoes, and two eggs over easy. I was blown away by the fried potatoes because these were not a frozen hash brown but had wonderful crispy bits with every bite. I found out they peel a couple hundred pounds of potatoes every day so they were the real deal as well! So I just have to say that if you want a great home cooked meal and some friendly conversation on your drive through Vernal, just pull up to Betty's and ask for Ryan, I'm sure he'll take great care of you!
