*TIED FOR #1 Dog Training in the Greenville area*…read more This is part of my review series on Therapy Dog Training. Our dog was recently certified and we want to help our neighbors through this long process! We were initially worried about going to Astro because we saw their police dog training program and thought that their training style would be too harsh. Boy were we surprised! Sandy and the training crew can get any dog to his/her potential and specialize in rehabilitating rescue dogs, so their approach balances positive and negative reinforcement to help dogs develop a gentle, responsive disposition. We completed intermediate and advanced classes at Astro, then did private lessons to complete our AKC Good Citizen and Advanced certification. Positives: Astro Kennels has the best suite of dog training classes in the Upstate. Their huge Astro dome and outdoor training ground are a beautiful venue. They have the best supply of collars and leashes, and a good boarding program. Negatives: They do not have a dedicated Therapy Dog class or Therapy Dog evaluators. They do offer private lessons that are excellent. *Routes to Therapy Dog Certification: 1. Attend private lessons for beginner through Therapy Dog and then get certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) via Noble Dog Hotel. This is the more expensive option. 2. Attend classes at Astro Kennels, then take Therapy Dog class at Petsmart in Mount Pleasant, SC, and then contact a private ATD evaluator through the ATD website. This is the cheaper option.

My dogs absolutely love going there and they get so excited when they see where they are! We've done everything there, from training to dock diving (well attempting to dock dive). Their training classes are the best I've ever done and so affordable. Just all around amazing place either way amazing staff! Pics are ones Astro has sent me!

Being a new single dog dad scared me. I've been waiting 10 years to get a dog. I've always wanted a…read morepuppy but the start to this journey really scared me. Especially since I'm doing this alone. Mikaela at Horizon has really been there for us and helping me to be a supportive dog parent. Bohdi gets compliments all the time what a good dog he is. He's an English Retriever and I've had him since he was 8 weeks. Mikaela taught me the importance of patience and was really there for me in my time of need when I felt like I was doing something wrong (I tend to overthink and be hard on myself). She would give me guidance and ways to be more patient and to also understand that he is just being a puppy and he is trying to figure things out. She helped me to keep going at a steady and learning patience. The Canine Connection School is also really amazing and I love it. I just wish it had a section for new puppy owners or just puppies in general. Like a section of how to start off with success with a new puppy and how to stay strong during this hard time. Mikaela taught me the importance of check ins, how to be Bohdi's advocate, Bohdi's body language cues, and helping me with crate training techniques. Her guidance through Bohdi's fear period has also helped immensely. I know that going through Horizon may be a bit expensive, but this is an investment that you will have forever. It's like paying for college, but this is going into knowledge of having a bond with your pup and having a better understanding of how to be there for them. One of my favorite things I've learned from Horizon is that your dog is not an accessory. He is your family member. You are his whole world. Be your dogs advocate. Bohdi is now 23 weeks old. We will most likely go back for another session when he is 1 years old or later. Just to check in and see how we are both doing. I'm continuously learning and I count on Horizon to be there.

*Not Recommended for Dog Training in the Greenville area / try others first*…read more This is part of my review series on Therapy Dog Training. Our dog was recently certified and we want to help our neighbors through this long process! We previously appreciated our dog boarding at Upstate Dog Academy but we stopped going for several reasons. Positives: James at Upstate Dog Academy offers dog boarding in his home and has a yard for daily outings. Negatives: We started with lessons at Upstate Dog Academy but we later found that other area dog trainers offer classes with a mix of more positive reinforcement and our dog started making more progress once we switched. Also, our dog just didn't seem to be getting the same amount of outdoor time here as at other kennels. On our last visit for boarding, our dog looked visibly distressed as we pulled in the driveway and we decided we would not be going back. *Routes to Therapy Dog Certification: 1.
