I sadly don't have a garden, but I love dropping in just to browse. They have a small outside section with a good variety of plants which vary with the season. It's almost like visiting an actual garden. Inside is also immaculately presented, with a small but good range of seeds, pretty pots, garden ornaments, etc. The staff are friendly too. I really wish I could go in for more than a few seeds for a window box According to their website they've been awarded Garden Centre of the year 2007 by the Horticultural Trade, in recognition of their innovative use of a small space. Can't be bad if other Garden Centres recognise how good they are! Their website is http://n1gc.co.uk/

Recently however, I've had a revelation and I am now growing not one, but six (!) different herbs. Although off-put occassionally by rouge squirrels having a nosey, last weekend I successfully grew them to the height that repotting was required. Not up for treking out to one of the mega gardening centres, I was very pleased to discover that only 10 minutes walk away was the beautiful North One! This little garden centre is small but perfectly formed. As well as stock a range of pot plants and herbs, they have every type of seed, soil, pot and cane imaginable. Prices are however, a bit more steep than you would get in one of the chains. I was a bit taken a back to discover that a cute purple bench, just big enough for two but no more was selling for £250. Needless to say I left that one to someone that might be feeling a bit more flash than myself! Now I've put my gardening kitty to use I can safety assure you that Mr Mint, Lord Thyme, Miss Chives, Sir Sage, Prof Parsely and Queen Rosemary are looking better than ever! Four terracotta pots, soil, plant food, and a few other bits and pieces came to around £35. Ok, it's a bit more than I wanted to pay but the whole day was lovely. No long commute. No chain garden centre. Just a lovely walk around Islington followed by a day of getting my hands dirty. Perfect!

For example, our garden is deprived from sunshine for most of the day (aka shade) but we nevertheless want to have a garden that exists more than off shrubs and other boring greenery... Aside from the nice staff, their selection is also quite extensive - especially given that the store is very close to the city centre and doesn't have the opportunity to expand like other suburban garden-centre monsters.

Oooh yay for mums!…read more My mother came to visit my kitten in our new(ish) flat and was truly unimpressed by the state of our little garden. I should probably mention that we had to dump our old kitchen in the garden for two months before we could persuade someone to drive us to the dump...so this has left a muddy, slimy mess. Oops. However, my mum took one look at it, and marched me off to the Camden garden centre to see if we could find some tools and plants. I am glad we did! This place has: * A huge selection of plant pots and statues (I wasn't into them...but maybe other yelpers are?) * Plenty of plants in pots, ready to re-locate into your garden...We bought as many herbs as we could carry!! * Seeeeds! All the seeds you could think of (or bulbs) with seed trays etc. * Spades, forks, gloves etc. * Houseplants * Friendly, helpful staff This is all very helpful...but I would not have fixed my garden without mum's help (plus she paid for some of it, saying it was a moving in prezzy!) So I recommend visiting here with a parent in tow. Thanks mum!!

When I moved to London several years back, I think it took me about a year to figure out one could buy household goods someplace other than argos. Of course, I lived in halls near covent garden, so I give myself a small excuse for that idiocy. Now that I'm in Camden, I generally head to A&K for all the little bits and peices of kitchen and other assorted household stuff I may need (for those who have done time in the states, I often go here for the random sorts of things that used to have me Target-bound). They are not infallible, nor would I go there for sparkling service (not bad mind, they just basically leave you alone), but I find that if I can't find something random in A&K, there's a decent chance I won't find it anywhere else nearby either.

The shop is pretty god damn big as well, reaching very far back from the entrance.. in a true warehouse fashion. The staff responded well to my approaches (not in that way) - 'Yes I would like to buy a bed' 'Right this way sir!' Good lads. And a good shop, with competitive prices and a distinct lack of competition in the area, I imagine they are making a pretty penny for themselves - and with friendly staff like Mike available, they probably deserve it!
