Choosing an adoption agency is such a huge decision! Searching was incredibly stressful, however we…read morechose Adoption Resources for the following reasons: 1) their fee structure was variable based on if your placement came from them versus if you found a placement from an out of state agency (this felt more fair to us than other agencies that change a high fee even though you may need to select out of state agencies and pay them fees as well), 2) they had adoption work shops while you are going through the process and offered post-placement groups and support, 3) everyone seemed very kind and knowledgeable. We are happy to say we definitely chose the right agency! Everyone is an absolute pleasure to work with and has supported us along the way. They helped place us with our daughter who is more than we ever expected or could have hoped for. We cannot thank them enough, and for anyone on the fence - go to one of their free monthly info-sessions. It really helps give you an overview of the process, but more importantly will give you a feeling for the amazing agency and people who work there.

I have only good things to…read moresay about them - so many positive things that words would fail to capture my sentiments completely. Their staff are experienced, imminently qualified, passionate about adoption, and thorough and attentive during all phases and facets of a logistically complex process. They regularly host seminars with guest speakers to provide information to prospective parents about various options and decisions that must be weighed, interpreting medical records, and understanding the experiences of birth mothers. They provide coaching on building a compelling prospective parent profile and even on newborn baby basics. This level of support extends beyond education to a more personal level, where we have found each and every staff member to be unfailingly compassionate, supportive, and patient, even during the most challenging of times. Post placement, they continue their engagement by hosting new parents groups - an opportunity to share experiences, challenges, and build a community of adoptive families. After working with many different agencies and firms of varying sizes and approaches, I can say that our experiences with Adoption Resources stands out above all in terms of their support throughout the entire process.

The Alliance for Children facilitated my international adoption back in 1982 and they are now the agency I chose to facilitate my current international adoption. The Alliance staff are some of the most committed and compassionate people I know. They were my first choice when my husband and I decided to adopt. From my parents' experience and from my own, adopting internationally is a roller coaster. There are long wait times because of bureaucracy, changing laws, and the fact that unlike other processes, at the end of this one an actual human being is being united with a family. It can be frustrating and difficult but totally worth it in the end. The Alliance has done everything they can to make this process as smooth as it can be and I am very grateful for that. This included facilitating a challenging process in my birth country to obtain a lawyer to find and certify my original birth documents. I have referred friends adopting domestically to the Alliance, too, and they had wonderful experiences with the social workers and the home study process. I would recommend them to anyone.

Additionally, the curriculum was unorganized, rambling, out-of-date, and one of the presenters appeared intoxicated. We learned nothing and it was a waste of time. When we brought our concerns, along with solutions, to the facilitators, rather than make improvements to the curriculum, we were removed from the training session. Do not do business with Children's Friend. There are much better agencies out there than one that prioritizes protecting their program over supporting prospective adoptive parents.

Referring to families and children as "crazy" numerous times, targeting the one black attendee, using immense judgement towards parents struggling with substance misuse when discussing case examples (which, BTW case examples really aren't part of the MAPP curriculum but it was the full 3 hours of day one). Additionally, one of the facilitators had a noticeable slur to their voice that was consistent with being inebriated. The company shared it was their "accent" despite it growing more pronounced as the night went on. We brought our feedback to the facilitators after the group, and we were subsequently kicked out of the training all together. Instead of creating a safe space for pre-adoptive parents to learn about how to help children in care, this company stays problematic. I understand this is just one experience, and I have to have hope that this agency does better and we just got the short end of the staff-but this is absolutely deplorable behavior and upper management should be ashamed for how they handled our feedback. Please consider going to another agency for MAPP trainings- you will NOT learn how to safely engage with kids through a trauma informed lens from this agency.
