Specialties
What makes BETA Academy unique? We're Washington, DC's largest and longest-running martial arts academy, offering MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo, and Strength Training under one roof for adults and kids ages 3-18. We're also led by an active champion, not just an instructor: founder Nakapan Phungephorn holds a 4th-degree BJJ black belt, a Judo black belt, and a Muay Thai "Kru" certification, with 100+ titles including the 2025 IBJJF Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Beyond credentials, it's our respect-first, tight-knit community that keeps students for life — plus competitive fight teams (Naksu Squad, 47 Ronin) and an invite-only Combat Athlete Program for those ready to go further. This is martial arts as a way of life, not just a workout, in the heart of Washington, DC.
History
Established in 2008.
BETA Academy is Washington, DC's largest and longest-running Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA academy. Founded in 2008 by Nakapan Phungephorn, a 4th-degree BJJ black belt under Professor Pedro Sauer and certified Muay Thai Kru, BETA, Body Efficient Tactical Arts, has trained tens of thousands of students. We offer BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, and self-defense classes for adults and kids ages 5+, plus competitive fight teams for those ready to test their skills. Our name draws from the Betta fish: fierce, resilient, and agile. Affiliated with the World Thai Boxing Association, Kudo International Federation, and Team Big Brothers. Built on respect, discipline, and community, BETA Academy is DC's destination for martial arts training, functional fitness, and lasting self-confidence — for beginners and champions alike.
Meet the Business Owner: Nakapan P.
Nakapan Phungephorn is the founder of BETA Academy, the largest and longest-running mixed martial arts and fitness academy in Washington, DC. A lifelong martial artist with over 30 years of experience, Nakapan began training in 1993 to recover from a debilitating bout with Lyme's disease — and never stopped. His pursuit of becoming a "complete" martial artist led him through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo, and MMA, earning a 4th degree BJJ black belt (under Professor Pedro Sauer), a Judo black belt, and a Muay Thai "Kru" instructor certification from the World Muay Thai Association.
A decorated competitor with over 100 championship titles — including the 2025 IBJJF Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championship — Nakapan founded BETA Academy in 2009 to share the discipline, confidence, and community that martial arts gave him. Since then, the school has trained tens of thousands of students and produced countless BJJ, MMA, and Muay Thai champions.
