This review is relentlessly long and, unless you plan on seeking treatment at BestSelf, probably very boring. I'm mainly posting it because of the catharsis that it will provide me. Otherwise, I hope the information is helpful for someone. .... I wish I was more surprised by my negative experience with BestSelf at 768 Delaware Ave in Buffalo. I have a chronic condition that requires me to be under the care of a doctor...so I have a tremendous amount of experience dealing with behavioral healthcare and all it entails, unfortunately. I'm from out of the area and recently needed to find care near my new home. I can't drive. BestSelf at 768 Delaware is nearby and covered by my health insurance. I "scheduled" an assessment for yesterday. A few hours before, I received a call from a Hannah to fill out paperwork over the phone. She also verified my insurance as United with a $300 deductible, which is not accurate. I let her know that and I told her that the assessment process can be quite traumatic for me and I didn't want to go through it if I wasn't covered there...that's precisely what happened five months earlier at ECMC and it took me this long to be able to seek treatment again. The insurance was still coming back wrong later, but I decided to go in for my assessment anyway because I [NEEDED HELP!] thought they may be able to figure it out if they could see the insurance card or discuss it in person. We arrive and tell the woman at the front desk, Jae, that they're having an issue verifying our insurance, they keep saying we have a deductible. She immediately put her hands up and said "we have nothing to do with insurance here!" in a defensive way. She is at the front desk...who else are we supposed to attempt to discuss it with? We have never been here before. My husband tried to further explain that we had talked with Hannah several times that morning to get it figured out. Jae said that she had no idea who Hannah was, there was no one named Hannah working there and we must have been talking to a centrally located customer service dept. Ok. As I was silently questioning the relevance of her statement, a woman sitting at her computer about ten feet away from Jae said, "that's me, I'm Hannah." ...wow. Jae got frustrated at that point and that's when another front desk employee got involved, Rob. He matter-of-factly told me that if their insurance verifier is saying there is a deductible then there is. But if I was 100% positive that there wasn't then I could go ahead with the assessment and be billed for it if I turned out to be incorrect. We don't have any money and I have a personal policy to not be 100% positive about much. I told him that I would be happy if someone simply called Optum to verify my benefits. 15 minutes later Rob said it had been checked again and there is a $300 deductible. I didn't have it in me to interact with these people anymore...so I told Rob we would look into it ourselves and we left. He was short and dismissive the entire time. About 20 minutes after leaving BestSelf, Nicole from insurance verification calls me to get the phone number for Optum. She tells me she's going to call them to verify my benefits and will call me back. Novel idea. She calls back moments later to tell me that I only have a $20 copay for their services. Shocker. What an efficient and practical use of everyone's time...and not at all soul crushing. Great, can I get HELP now? Apparently she could not have called in the couple hours before my assessment window, or during the time we waited in the waiting room. But she did do it after there were no more available assessment times. I've actually worked for a medical group in the past verifying health insurance. It's usually an incredibly simple and straightforward process for the provider. Sometimes the provider has to call, and it is typical to do so if they need clarity. If I hadn't been in the middle of a mental health crisis Rob's overly obvious passive aggressive attitude would have made my blood boil, as he intended. But in this case it just leaves me very, very sad that he, along with Jae and Nicole, showed so little compassion. I don't need a front office to be saccharine sweet or to even behave professionally...as long as their actions don't block my access to care; which is what happened yesterday. It'd also be pretty neat to be treated with respect. I have to use this BestSelf location regardless, because of my circumstances...and I will be treated poorly here in the future also. So I'll just have to keep advocating for myself. All in all, besides the brief interactions I had with Hannah on the phone... The front office at 678 Delaware, and insurance verification seem to struggle to perform their jobs, which is indicative of a poorly run company. So I don't have much faith in their other locations now either. And forget about compassion!...but why would you need that anyway?

Both locations are new and modern and there is a pharmacy on-site at both which is handy. When I forget to pick up an important Rx, I usually get a friendly phone call and they drop it off to me. The practitioners and staff are on the younger side and have fresh attitudes instead of former doctors that were old and just grinding out the same old thing. The whole experience feels more modern and patient focused. The Evergreen Health approach is open to all types of people and I live seeing people from the LGBT+ community there, but the atmosphere is inclusive and "traditional" families are equally at home. Imo, every practice should serve the full spectrum of a neighborhood's population. The care is top notch. I see that there are some negative reviews here ...and I have to say that it seems that there is more to the story than the person is telling... Like were they non+compliant with Rx or doctors orders or is there a behavioral problem? I recommend the practice to everyone that I know and I honestly believe that it is the best healthcare choice in our area

They always verify with me if it is ok to text, mail, leave a voicemail. I appreciate that. I have been a long time patient of Evergreen and do not trust my care with anyone else. From primary care staff, specialty care staff, to pharmacy services personnel, all physicians and nurses, and all other employees including those behind the scene, I watched them grow from a small one doctor practice into an awesome large revamped multi-specialty building still treating the same community....and then even more. It's been my pleasure to watch the tremendous growth and success and cannot wait to see what other opportunities awaits your organization! Warm Regards, Sharon Rupp
