    With hummus, tomato, and zatar
    Alexis R.

Tasty bagels with unique toppings. I enjoyed the sesame seeds on both the top and bottoms of the bagels. I tried the hummus, tomato, zatar bagel and my hubby had the frickin' chicken, which had chilled chicken, red pepper pesto and was topped with an aioli slaw. Both were satisfying and tasty, accompanying by chilled Moa brews.

Mean Joe Green in the background and TAB and coconut water :)

This is probably one of my favorite bagel shops. The TAB and king salmon are definitely great breakfast choices that won't leave you hungry. However beware, they're addicting if you like the bread sort of thing. The plain spread and sweet options are good too. They have coconut water and flat whites if you are interested as well as packs of bagels to go. Definitely will be back! :)

Great coffee but really strange cinnamon raisin bagel with "cream cheese"
    Christine L.

I know this probably won't sit well with fans of this place, but I was really underwhelmed by their bagels! In fact the only reason this review gets two stars is because their coffee was pretty good. I LOVE bagels and cream cheese. I've been to New York and had classic bagels and schmear, I love Noah's Bagels in Nor Cal, and I've even made bagels myself at home in Hawaii. So when I heard there was a famous bagel place in Auckland, I was really stoked to check it out. *sigh* This morning my Mom and I trekked over to Wellesley St and joined the masses (yes it was busy) at Ugly Bagels. Mom ordered the white rabbit which is a sesame bagel with cream cheese, tomatoes, basil, and fennel olive oil. I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese. First of all, I don't know if this is a country wide thing, or just the brand they use, but the cream cheese was WEIRD! It didn't even taste like cream cheese but more of a strange mixture between mayonnaise and sour cream. The texture was runny and just ODD. My bagel was not a real bagel by NY standards. It was flat, dense, and lacking that chewy doughyness you come to expect from a really good bagel. The taste was very bland, and I couldn't get through more than three bites before putting it aside, disappointed. My moms bagel was more of the same. She said if it hadn't been for the tomato and basil it would have been awful. Same strange cream cheese and bland dense bagel. The only saving grace was the fact that their coffee was really good. I mean REALLY good. One of the best lattes I've had in NZ so far. So maybe this is just how NZ bagels are, or maybe I'm a spoiled on American bagels, but I will not be back. Sorry Ugly Bagels, it was a sub par flavor experience.

Second "breakfast" of the day was spent here with no regrets whatsoever. At least for me. It was my first time and I didn't really know what to order mostly because I was looking for something sweet. So I went ahead and asked one of the employees for a recommendation and without hesitation, the King Kong was introduced to me. I was blown away. Too sweet but too good. I say this because I couldn't eat the other half of the excessively sweet bagel. My husband did that job for me. Speaking of my husband, he ordered the peanut butter bagel and said it wasn't anything special but delicious, especially for all the peanut butter fans out there. Overall, good food. Would I give it another try? Yes, because it was my second "breakfast" and I would like to indulge in the sweetness when I'm starving.

My diet has gone to shit since I arrived in Auckland yesterday. First I ate a cookie, and now an entire fucking bagel! I tried half of the King Salmon and half of the Swiss Melt with Marmite, both on wood oven-baked sesame bagels. I realized two things: 1) I love Marmite 2) These are the best bagels I've had in my life! Pass judgement if you will, but I didn't feel guilty eating these - they are much smaller and lighter than American bagels!

First of all, I just want to say that the service at Best Ugly Bagels is spot on! My Mum, sister and I visited Best Ugly one Saturday morning, a few minutes before 8am - they were just about to open and the staff were chirpy, welcoming, and very friendly. This was a great start to the day, especially as it was such an early time on the weekend! I was super excited to try the Best Ugly bagels at their Newmarket location (love their City Works Depot branch, but a bit out of the way for me) as they had a 2 for 1 bagel deal going that day - what a steal! My sister and I both ordered their special breakfast bagels (I think this was the bagel of the day) which consisted of two fried eggs, bacon, rocket and parmesan. Best breakfast ever!!! We also ordered three coffees. All were seriously amazing. Strong, extra hot and creamy - definitely the best coffee I had in 2014 and looking forward to many more of them this year! What I love about Best Ugly, is that they not only serve delicious food and coffee, but you can also watch them hand roll the bagels and bake them in a wood fired oven. Such a great idea and also very cool that the public can watch the chefs work their magic! Also a big thumbs up to their outdoor courtyard with colourful seating and herb pot plants, plus the Vespa parked right outside gave it that extra touch! Highly recommend Best Ugly. Definitely worth trying it out if you haven't already!

If fresh out of the oven Montreal-style bagels with just the right amount of chew sounds like a bit of you, get to Best Ugly ASAP. Not only are these bad boys generously topped with locally sourced, artisan products (like the gloriously sticky, fruit laden Te Horo jam or Al Brown's very own Lemon and Fennel oil) but you can watch them getting hand-rolled, boiled and baked right in front of your eyes. My go-to is the T.A.B (tomato, avo and basil), which comes with a sprinkling of sea salt and Al's lemon and fennel oil. We all know, the T.A.B combo is tried and tested but what sets Best Ugly's apart is the addition of the lemon fennel oil. Seriously, it's next level. I have also heard good things about the Yodi (Pastrami, Swiss, Habanero mustard & pickle) and given Al Brown's passion for cured meats and how epic the Habanero is at Depot, I'm happy to believe the hype. Even if you're not a fan of bagels (who are you?), it's worthwhile stopping by and watching them work their magic. Their wood-fired oven, which is custom-made and powered by Manuka, is an absolute beast, churning out bagels like there's no tomorrow. Not to mention the guys who operate it - how on earth do they get 10 deep rows of bagels into the oven and flip them with such ease? I struggle to flip a lone pancake so to me these guys have mad skills. Just in case you want to recreate the bagel magic at home you can also buy all the spread spreads, cured meats and oils in store as well as, of course, the bagels and Al Brown's beloved cookbooks.

Went to Best Ugly Bagels because I had been told they had awesome bagels! I went there and the bagels were all hand rolled and fresh. I ended up getting the King Salmon Bagel, it was really good but it wasn't the best smoked salmon bagel I've ever had. It included smoked king salmon, red onions, capers, dill and zangy zeus cream cheese & a fresh lemon wedge. Served in a little plastic basket accompanied by a double shot latte. Coffee was really good as well, and they had an adorable seating area outside with a fireplace & heaters!

I feel sorry for these delicious bagels that they are so blatantly and without hesitation called UGLY. Beauty comes from within! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! What other beauty phrase can I spout out here? The point is, stop being mean! We popped in for a quick lunch and were absolutely delighted at the bagels on offer. I was a bit boring and immediately searched for something with salmon and cream cheese and was not let down when a delicious bagel was popped down in front of me. Topped with capers, this lunch seriously hit the spot. The bagel was soft and fresh and the toppings generous - however it was the perfect size - not too big, not too little, just right. Special mention must go to the awesome staff who yell out your order one after the other with some serious gusto - all the while freshly baking bagels. They have created a super fun atmosphere and I am so bummed that Best Ugly Bagels is in an entirely different country!

Best ugly bagels. Well... they are anything but ugly and are definitely the best! What a great set up. Large wood oven, open planned kitchen, smiling and happy staff. Set up in a sort of shared warehouse with other restaurants and offices as it seems. First thing I noticed was the handsome devil on the wall. A wonderful cow head with a bagel stuck on his horn. I love taxidermy. Then there is the whole lot of fresh bagels being cooked right in front of you. Woo hoo! It's hard not to order a habanero chilli bagel with swiss cheese, mustard, pickles and pastrami. Could there be anything better on a bagel? Clearly not! Schwing! The bagel was toasted and cheese melted. I thought it was going to come out fresh, but that's all cool. Bagel was great, not that chewy but sweet. I guess the only thing about it that disappointed me was that it was not hot. Maybe I have a massive tolerance. But I when I saw habanero, I thought chilli awesomeness. It had a bite, but not a kick. Oh well. Damn tasty though and I would order it again, just that I would add some of the amazing looking chilli sauce on hand near the counter. When I come back to Auckland, I am coming back here for sure!

One of the best bagel sandwiches I've ever had. You can't beat freshly made bagels - you can see them making the dough and making the bagels. The only downside is that they are a bit expensive at ~$10, and they are a bit smaller than American bagels, but food portions are smaller everywhere else in the world compared to the U.S. I got the Yodi for $10, which had pastrami, swiss cheese, habanero mustard and pickles on a sesame bagel and loved it. The pictures of it are not super attractive, but it tastes better than it looks. Wish we had more places in the States where they churn out fresh bagels like this, but I guess it's good for my waistline and pocketbook that we don't have more of these places! I'll be back here next time I'm in Auckland.

Pretty darn amazing, I must say!…read more Vulcan Lane Bagels has just opened up right in the heart of the city, serving bagels with an array of toppings, Atomic coffee, cold drinks and pastries from Scratch Bakers. This place is a hole-in-the-wall, with a bench seat, room for only two people, so ideally this place was designed for on-the-go bagels! I came here for lunch yesterday, seeing as it is right across the lane from my work! It was incredibly busy when I arrived, however owner Ruben was friendly and welcoming and the other lady taking the orders was efficient. However, I could tell they were feeling the stress with so many people! After overhearing another customer telling his friends that the "chipotle beef was so delicious", I just knew I had to order it! Served with a fresh tomato and onion salsa, herbs and their homemade hot sauce, the chipotle beef bagel was absolutely melt in your mouth, to.die.for, scrumdiddlyumptious! I could have eaten another one (or two) it was that good! But watch out, it is spicy, and had me grabbing for my water bottle every few bites! I can't wait to go back and try more of their toppings. Here's a taste of what else is on offer: - Scrambled eggs, prosciutto and thyme (ideally a breakfast bagel - they open at 7am) - Pastrami with hot wholegrain mustard and smoked Swiss cheese - Avocado smash with lemon and chilli flakes - Peanut butter or nutella! Highly recommend trying out Vulcan Lane Bagels! Plus everything they serve is under $10 - absolute bonus!

It's literally a little window, blink and you might miss it... just look for a huddle of people on a weekday - they seem to have a lot of regulars from the nearby offices! I couldn't decide if I should be annoyed or amused by the service here. The guys working are super friendly, but this means they are chit chatting away with the customers (particularly the ladies, let's be honest) while a line is building up behind them. With just the two of them working, it makes for slowww service, but verrrrry friendly and personal service. Basically, don't drop in for a quick takeaway coffee and bagel on the run, it's more like a beachside cafe on island time at a takeaway window on Vulcan Lane. The bagel was pretty good - I got some kind of riff on a normal offering in order to get melted cheese and avocado together with some chili flakes. It's not a giant NY style bagel (still haven't found a proper NY bagel here, I know I know) but it'll satisfy in the meantime. They were happy to mix and match their offerings, and their bagel/coffee special is the best deal in town (you get your coffee for $2 - whatever kind you want!) Only problem, you guessed it, the guys got chatting and my coffee was waylaid until I reminded them. Great coffee once I got it though!

Goodness Gracious offers a menu of NY Bagels, which the store follows a similar concept at Best Ugly Bagels. To be honest, I was initially hesitant to try Goodness Gracious. I have had Ugly Bagels a couple of times and there was a lot to live up to. Their menu was quite standard with your classic sandwich fillings in a bagel but executed well. I do like the option to choose the type of bagel you want. I'm a sucker for salmon, so I chose the Classic bagel. It was a nice change since the salmon was cooked rather than raw. My dining partner chose the Wilbur bagel which was an unusual bagel filling with a spiced pulled pork. Again like Burger Burger, this was a very messy bagel to eat although tasty. We also had to try the Peanut butter and salted caramel smoothie. For $7 this was quite reasonable with the unique flavours and great flavour. Seating was very limited so we had to takeaway. This is where we realised some of the bagels you may need a fork and knife to eat it. Good place to try. Everything was tasty and quick, just not quite as good as Best Ugly Bagels.
