We had limited time and told him of our desires and he was able accommodate us. So fun to see the beautiful parts of Scotland. Next time we need to go for over a week if not 2 weeks. They have a fancy Mercedes van that seats 7 people comfortably. Only 2 of us in our party so we had plenty of space for souvenirs. While in Scotland, one of our top things to do was to see Loch Ness. With a little tooling around…read moreonline, I found Highland Tours, which offers a variety of single and multi-day tours around Scotland. They had a single day (about 12 hours total) bus tour of Loch Ness and the Highlands, which was perfect for us. The bus left from Edinburgh, and left right on time. We traveled through a suburban town and eventually onto a main road that lead us up the eastern highlands. This area was mostly covered with green lands, hills, and sheep. Thousands of sheep. We made a stop in a small town where one could get a drink or snack at the local coffee shop, but unfortunately, being a Sunday, the rest of the town was closed. We continued on our tour, eventually stopping at Loch Ness. Loch Ness was amazing. We had the option of taking a 45 minute cruise on the Loch, which was cold, windy, and amazing. After the cruise, we had plenty of free time to check out the gift shop and have a bite to eat before having to be back on the bus. The tour then proceeded down through the Western Highlands. There, we saw some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. We stopped at an area called Glencoe, which was quite dreary but breathtaking. We had about 15 minutes on the side of the road just to observe and take pictures of the enormous green hills, rocks and waterfalls. Because our group was organized an on time returning to the bus after each stop, our tour guide treated us to a couple of extra stops. We stopped at a moving war memorial, a pretty large gift shop, and another rest stop that offered gift shops and places to eat. Our last stop was in Stirling, where we got out of the bus to observe the William Wallace monument. (Side note, the Wallace monument was the one thing I really wanted to see up close and didn't get to do on my trip. Next time, I'll make it!) The entire bus tour lasted about 12 hours, returning us to Edinburgh in time for a late dinner. It was a great way to see a large portion of Scotland's beautiful landscape in one day, and gave us ideas of where we'd like to re-visit and spend more time when we return. I would recommend this tour group, and would try another one of their one-day tours in the future.

Payment was simple. Sometimes it can be a hassle when you're touring overseas, but that was easy peasy. Our guide was Derek Giles. He was a perfect match for our group- professional, down to earth, and easy going. I've worked with some who are a bit pushy, egotistical, or too regimented. Derek was delightful. We did have some unforeseen and avoidable problems, but you know what? Stuff happens. It was all handled quickly and without a lot of fuss. The show went on and we had a fabulous time. It means a lot to know you're in good hands. Derek introduced us to a lot of local customs and hideouts that we wouldn't have known about without his suggestion - including imbibing on a wee dram of 12 year old scotch and dinner on the wharf in Oban that was to DIE for. Yum, yum. I'm missing Scotland already and would recommend you see it with Scottish Terrier Tours.

I am not the outdoor kind of gal, and since we had previously cruised by it on the previous tour- I didn't feel the need to leave the boat. I asked Sean if I could remain on board. He was very kind and said no problem and I was more than welcomed to remain. This hour was absolutely THE BEST PART of the tour! I had the privilege to see some of the Puffins fairly close just floating on the waves, while others were flying very fast in a huge group towards the island. It was a lovely sight to see. Sean was the perfect gentleman and patiently answered all of my questions. He gave me so much insight into various aspects of the tour, like the Puffins habits; fishing for lobster/mussels and the Staffa Boats. Plus, I asked him where I could purchase "local" wool yarn and he told me where to shop. The yarn I purchased was simply perfect and exactly what I was looking for. You can easily spend the whole day here. Definitely bring a picnic and tootle on down to South Ayrshire for a lovely day out. The "castle" is really more of a mansion, richly detailed and a festival of information for architecture, history and art buffs. The grounds are expansive, great to explore on foot or with three separate parking lots (the castle, the walled garden and the swan pond). You can skip the castle and just explore the grounds and it will still be well worth the time (and slightly cheaper). This is a gorgeous showpiece of Scottish tourism, and only an hour from Glasgow. Go here!
