As much as I try to avoid giving half-stars, this one is a 3.5 rounded up to a 4…read more As part of my ongoing quest to find a neighborhood baker, I paid a visit to Boulangerie des Bains on my way to work. I had been avoiding BdB because it seemed a bit too organized and a bit too clean to have a real neighborhood feel. They had many tempting pastries and chocolates that were tastefully presented in a large display, but (1) it was 7:30 am and too early for a piece of tart or a slice of cake, and (2) I had decided to sample the croissant at each bakery for a fair comparison. Although admittedly I did cheat a little bit and get a croissant des amades (CHF2.20--quite reasonable!). I was expecting a more manufactured taste than the small hole-in-the-wall bakery that I visited last week, considering the larger scale of BdB. Surprisingly, the croissant had a nice, slightly imperfect density and light sticky glaze that made it evident that they were home-made, and the almond paste inside was also a good texture of graininess. In fact, it tasted much fresher than the croissant I had purchased at the smaller bakery. As there are plenty of other bakeries in the area that I have yet to visit as I continue on my quest, I cannot say at this point that I've found my neighborhood baker. But if I'm looking for a little treat, I would not hesitate to go back to BdB to try their many other tasty-looking offerings.

Pouly is a bakery chain having locations across Switzerland, with a dozen plus boutiques in Geneva…read morealone. This must be a new location, for not only could I not find it on yelp, but even googling doesn't come up with this location (though one can find it buried on the company website). But, it's located one floor below street level in the metro shopping area inside Gare Centrale, Geneva (Cornavin). There's a boulangerie/patisserie where one can buy anything from croissants, breads, pastries and there's also a tea room just across with a good selection of sandwiches. It's difficult to decide on a single rating for the two. While I thoroughly enjoyed the roast beef sandwich as well as the tuna sandwich at the tea room (4 stars) the baked goods purchased to go at the boutique across disappointed (3 stars). I can barely tolerate a room temperature croissant, but I have absolutely no patience for one that is refrigerated. Same was the case with the bakery pizza, and no mechanism/offer to heat (at tea room across) it up. So, if you're looking for something savory: go across to the (Pouly) tea room instead. That said, the caramel and chocolate pastry atop the shortbread cookie crust was excellent (4.5 stars). I would recommend that above and over anything else in the boutique. There's a reason why a picture of the pastry comes up repeatedly on their Facebook page. Get it!

Very nice little boulangerie-pâtisserie at Cornavin - and it is open on Sundays! I highly recommend…read morethe sable fraises (a starwberry tart), and the croissant was nice. Service is friendly. I do wish they had seating - it would be quite perfect. You can also get reasonably (for Geneva) priced sandwiches. The almond criossant is great!
