My friends and I came to Bert's on a Saturday for lunch. None of us had ever been. We walked in and they were pretty busy but while looking at the menu a table clear out so we could sit. We ended up enjoy a family meal for the three of us. We are also surprised with their beer/cider selection. We enjoyed being able to have a cider with our BBQ. One of my favorite parts about it was their BBQ Sauces. They has several flavor with different levels of spicy. Overall it was a great place. Reasonably priced, good selection of meat, wonderful selection of sauces and a friendly wait staff. read more

My husband and I came in and split the three meat platter so we could try all they offer. Bottom line: the ribs were visibly inedible. They looked like jerky- stringy. I had a bite- awful. I did not even get a to go box to take it to my dogs. It was not worth complaining- we won't be back- they knew what they looked like when we were served. Not anywhere near on level with my other favorites, but it's not too bad either. The good stuff. They do a darn good pulled pork. However in my opinion it's kind of hard to screw up especially since you'll drown it in sauce afterwards. The brisket was a chopped brisket. It's a pretty smart move if you have an inferior cut of meat. That way you just mix it with some good fatty stuff and everyone is at the same level. It's tasty. I like the sauces. I'm a sweet sauce guy and these sauces are plenty sweet, but they have a little kick to them. I don't know how to describe it though. It's not very tomatoey. But it does have a good blend of acid and sweetness and spice. Where we lose traction is the sides. The mac and cheese is pretty good. Not too heavy, not tasting artificial. However the mac salad is awful. It has a weird texture and takes a lot of pickles and I'm not sure what else. The corn muffins were cold and uniform enough that it was obvious they were from a mix. I love sweet things, but the beans were actually a little too sweet. The value isn't terrible especially since barbecue is notoriously expensive. Went there on a Sunday afternoon - they had no chicken or ribs. Odd that BBQ place had no ribs...but oh well. Ordered 2 meat combo of pulled pork and brisket since that's was the only choice. Got coleslaw and beans for the sides. When I got home I realized there were no sauces. No worries, I have a bottle of Carolina's finest from a trip down South. The pulled pork was good, but good in the way that it's like how I slowed cooked a pork shoulder with BBQ sauce. It wasn't smoky, and quite pale overall - none of the dark smoke ring or deep smokey flavor. The slaw was good, and the beans, a bit sweet, has some bits of smoked meat which made it pretty good - by itself would be at least 3.5 stars. The brisket thought - it was a travesty. It's so finely chopped that it could be any other kind of meat. No discerning smoky flavor. It also had a real fatty mouth feel because I think they mixed everything together. Everywhere the South brisket are sliced - Texas, Carolina, Oklahoma - so you can eat the lean parts and adjust for the fatty bits. It also showcase your burnt ends and your smoke ring. Places that I had chopped brisket are usually in large chunks to also showcase the skills of the smoking. I was disappointed. read more

Stopped in tonight, my first time here. I think I timed it right, because a line formed behind me and was out the door by the time I left. I got carry out, 2 dinners with 3 meats, I figured I'd try what they had. Got potato salad and baked beans on the side. The cashier was either training someone or being trained ... In either case seemed a little overwhelmed. He took my order. They have the pad type register that asked you for the tip and suggests 20% before you're even served. I know it's just the register, but they should be able to disable it. Sauces are on the counter and you can take what you want in little cups to go .. You need to figure that out on your own. The habinaro is HOT, the jalipino was good and spicy the apricot was sweet and spicy. THE FOOD: the ribs were done well and meaty. Vert good 'crust' and nicely spiced. The pork was pretty bland and on the dry side, as was the brisket. The potato salad was a good consistency but other than some dill was unseasoned. The baked beans were too sweet for me to eat and the cornbread roll actually tasted off. I'd go back for the ribs if I had all the fixing' at home. I was hoping for better. read more

The soda fountain was empty & waiting for delivery, the cornbread was dry, the baked beans, pulled pork and macaroni & cheese was very spicy hot. Hate reading or leaving negative reviews but felt like I should warn you. Cornbread: So dry we couldn't even swallow it without taking a drink of water to let it soak. (My parents always told me to never spit food out of my mouth). When we asked if they had any fresh cornbread they said they were making it, and didn't think to offer a replacement side for it. Soda fountain: You're in luck if you want diet cola or diet Mt Dew. She said we could get our own water over in the corner but didn't offer any ice, which would've been helpful for putting the fire out. The restaurant was clean and decorated nicely. read more

Had the brisket sandwich with potato salad side for lunch. The brisket was pretty lousy, about the worst I've had, although even bad brisket is still decent. It was very greasy/fatty, no smoke flavor, and chopped up instead of sliced. The bun was excellent though; it deserved better meat to be paired with. The mustard salad...err potato salad...looked awful and tasted worse. I took one bite and threw the rest away. $9 is a decent price for the amount of food, but I won't be going back. read more

Wonderful and quick service. Restaurant was clean and sauces tasty. We will be back - the side options were well prepared: coleslaw was a little 'wet' but with the hint of pineapple added it was quite yummy! I loved the dill potato salad and it complimented my brisket nicely. Burger is what my days had and we both agree it was a winner! Where to begin? We began eating his bbq when he had a food truck in Dundee. The bbq was superb and we really enjoyed eating pretty much anything that he served. Fast forward to today. Over the past year or so, each time we have gone, things seem to be a little worse and a little worse. The bbq sauce seemed to be soured. Like it was kept on the table for an unhealthy amount of time. The pulled pork had no flavor on its own and did not have that good smoked pulled pork flavor one would expect for pulled pork. The bread the pulled pork was on was stale. No other way to put it. Moving on to the ribs...I'll upload pics so you can see, but they were pale, unseasoned, but mainly, they were days old. You can see it in the meat. That is unacceptable for a fairly reputable bbq joint who's price point is more than mediocre. The beans are always too sweet, but I'm a sweet baked beans kinda person so not much complaining there. Side note: bathrooms are deplorable. I've spoken with the owner on more than one occasion. He wasn't there today, and based on other reviewers, it seems he gets a bit defensive so it's not worth talking to him anyway. Sadly. Such great potential with such terrible execution. read more

Went here last week. I ordered the 2 meat with brisket and pulled pork. The meat was decent. The Mac n' cheese was probably generic powdered cheese brand. We ordered two canned sodas and a cup of water. We had to go up to the counter to get the water, and as we left we were told we were charged for two additional bottled waters. Gave it another chance. Out of ribs entirely, and I couldn't get a 3 meat combo with two servings of another meat because they "don't do that." Couldn't order a cup of water because they were out of cups. So go to the Walgreens across the street and buy more! The beans were definitely from a can. I left the restaurant hungry, and that should not happen at a real bar bq joint. I left my stamp card from the first visit on the table. Won't need it again. read more

BBQ can be a fickle beast, but I think Bert's handles it well enough. They have decent portions, and it all tasted good. One thing that I found funny is they chop their brisket. I am no expert, but i have eaten my fair share of brisket and bbq'd a lot of it as well. Always been taught, told, and believed that chopped brisket was a way to hide it being overcooked. And while it tasted good nice smoky flavor etc it was a bit chewy. Their menu says their brisket is sliced so to get it chopped was a little weird. I think I would've liked it better on a sandwich. Ribs good nice tug off the bone. Sides were good, and their sauces are delicious. Good beer selection, and the price is very reasonable. The negative is as slow as it was when we went in the tables had not been bussed. That smacks of laziness. And the inside isn't that big. read more

The worse bbq I have had!! My son raved about his Brisket done right. Well, I ordered a lb of brisket, only to see 3 very small slices of meat and the rest a chopped up mess!! I wanted slices of of meat. It was early when I stopped by so when I got home I put the brisket and a whole slab of ribs in the fridge until dinner. After looking at my meal and reheating the ribs and brisket I called the chuck wagon phone number. I asked the young gal if getting brisket the way I received it was what they normally do, because I needed to know in order for me to come back. She hung up on me. The ribs were very hard to eat off the bone and tough. I believe the silver on the back of the ribs should be taken off. The ribs are not cooked right. I took my son's word for Bert's being the best bbq brisket also. Nope, not even close!! I went to Lonestar in Dayton a couple weeks ago and had the BEST brisket I ever ate. It was all sliced on my dinner plate, not greasy and grisly and easy to chew. They ran out of ribs so we ordered the brisket. I will go back over there to get decent BBQ before going back home to Nevada. read more

After hearing about this place for so long from Friends me and my fiance finally decided to stop by and try the barbecue and we are so glad we did. The atmosphere of this place is fantastic! Cute little area, bunch of TVs, great food, and great beer. To top it off the people who work here are amazing. I got the brisket plate and my fiance got the pork plate both of which came with two sides so we decided to get four different things so we can try a little bit of everything. We got to sit and eat our amazing food, drink good beer, and we were lucky enough to have Star Wars on the TVs. Overall super awesome experience highly recommend! read more

I've had food a few times from Bert's Chuckwagon. All in all it is good all around food. It's not great but it's not fast food either. It's just good all around food. If you are a BBQ connoisseur then you will most likely not be happy with this place, but if you are just a joe smoe who wants decent food then give it a try. You maybe wondering why the 1 star (really it should be a 3 or 4). Well their customer service has declined severely since the opening in the currently location. I called in a phone order and the female who answered the phone (J) apparently is unable to listen to someone long enough to hear what they are ordering. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger with tots and a double bacon cheeseburger with onion rings (pretty simple order). She repeated the order a couple of times as both items with fries, I had to correct her a few times until she finally got it. I figured busy restaurant hard to hear customers on the phone no big deal to have to repeat myself. Told 20 minutes until food is ready. My fiancée goes to get our food, this is were it all goes down hill. She arrives and they had not even started to make our food. The cook who is now out front argues with her over our order saying that he will only make the burgers with the fries because that is what we ordered. He finally looks at the slip and sees that J wrote down the tots and onion rings and finally makes them. My fiancée goes to fill up a couple of togo containers of BBQ sauce, they were out of one at the counter J refused to refill the one at the counter or grab one that was already filled, minor annoyance but still an annoyance. The finally have the food made and go to ring her up, no issues with that besides the lack of bags. She joked that they never have bags, because they don't (the rely on what they steal from local store and what other customers give to them). The cook who was ringing her up said "we typically have bags, but we most not like you so we don't have them when you come in." Needless to say my fiancée left in near tears after such an experience. I call up and try to talk to Richard the owner who wasn't in. Emailed him instead and his response basically felt like he did not care. That his employees are more trust worthy and accurate then a customer. It's not wonder that business has been slowing down the past few months for him. If he fires these employees and hires new ones I would go back. But other wise why step foot inside. read more

Tried this place last summer as a food truck at a downtown venue. Brisket was good, but not much else. Decided to try again now that they're a full-fledged restaurant. Brisket sandwich is loaded with some great meat! The cole slaw is actually very tasty with apples added to make it a little sweeter. My son had the pulled pork sandwich which was equally as good. Right next to George Fox University, so we've been here a few tunes when dropping off our son who goes to college there. They have pulled pork, brisket and ribs, with a choice of 6 sides. Great burgers, too. I love the seasoned tater tots! Four BBQ sauces: regular, habanero, jalapeño, or apricot. Two TVs so you can watch the game while you chow down. Very friendly staff! read more

Food is good, service is so-so, hence the 2 stars. I wanted to order the 3 meat meal which comes with pork, brisket, and ribs. The cashier informed me that they are out of ribs. So I said ok give me pork in place of the ribs. She says, no, we don't double up on meats. What?? If you're out of one, you can't replace it with the other? Nope, she says. So basically if they are out of one of the meats you MAY NOT order the 3 meat meal. At all. They seem to run out of meats a lot, so basically their 3 meat plate is never available. If my kids weren't so hungry at the time, I would have left. What a stupid policy. read more

I spent $25 on the worst ribs I've had. These were bad. They were bad in a different way than Storr's, that's a whole other discussion (but theirs are bad too...guys ribs are not that hard). My wife who is pretty easy to please won't even finish them. They were tough which means they were undercooked (ribs that have been cooked low and slow fall off the bone), and there was virtually no flavor to them. I've seen ribs drenched in BBQ sauce to get their flavor, or my favorite, dry-rubbed. These didn't seem to have either, just dry, undercooked meat. For $25. I feel like I've been ripped off. The brisket that we got was better than the ribs. It was moist and once we put their BBQ sauce on it, it was great. Most true BBQ places will slice it in pencil-width strips and serve it, but this was all diced up in a pile, not sure why they did that. It lacked the presentation that a good pound of brisket has, and it's nice to be able to distribute the fat better when it's sliced. Anyway, the best of luck to Bert's, but we don't have the money lying around to gamble on whether our food will be good or not. read more

Food is great. The awkwardness & weirdness from the staff belie the fact that it should still be a cart. Ruddick/Wood is also frustratingly suffering from the same afflictions. Please don't share with your customers how a busy day that ended with a couple of your most popular menu items being out was the worst travesty that has ever befallen you. Don't tell me your day could be going better. Look like you know what you're doing. Running a restaurant is equally cooking skills and grace under pressure.
