Yet it's not Cold Rock. It's not even some cheap owner refusing to pay the franchising fee on a Cold Rock shop. Marble Slab Creamery is an international chain and Garden City is its first Brisbane-based franchise. I know gelati is kicking ice-cream's butt at the moment in the popularity arena but perhaps that's why I've made a return to it. I've always supported the underdog even if it means an extra couple of kilos to my thighs. Despite being a completely different franchise, the concept is basically the same as Cold Rock. Pick a flavour of ice-cream and some mix-ins. Watch the puny shop assistant struggle to get a decent sized scoop and then mix everything up on a cold marble slab. Pay for ice-cream. Run far away from the mall rats and enjoy ice-cream in peace. It's impossible to recommend a flavour as there are a million combinations to be had. The other night, I had the Caramel peanut butter crisp - sweet cream ice cream with crushed butter finger, chocolate chips and caramel. D'lish! Marble Slab Ice Creamery definitely has better quality ice-cream than Cold Rock. If you want something a little different there's always the ice-cream pizza. Personally I'm not game but I'd love to hear all about it if any fellow yelpers are.

So I was out for dinner at Market Square and, as you do, had probably eaten way too much. No room…read morefor dessert, I thought. But nope! - along came a girl with free samples of froyo - and they weren't bad so off to this new shop it was. I had no idea where "oops!" actually was, but never fear, it wasn't hard to spot: just follow the blaring K-pop. Sadly my appalling karaoke effort wasn't successful in scoring any free toppings, but more on that later. First things first, because I know you're all dying to know: yes, they make the froyo for you. No self serve here, but the variety is everything you'd expect: I think about 8 flavours of frozen yoghurt, the original and fruity flavours and then green tea. There's plenty of toppings too. Naturally, I opted for the mango pearls (popping boba) because that's how I roll. But at a quick glance it looked like they had all the usual suspects. The froyo itself was pretty good, and nothing unusual to report. Maybe I'm not enough of a conoisseur to write an essay about the quality of frozen yoghurt, but no complaints - it was up to the standard of any of the big chains if not a little better! The emphasis at Oops is definitely on the yoghurt itself - I got a LOT for the size of my cup! The flip side of that, though, is that toppings aren't included (that's right, aren't included) and cost extra, unless you join in their little marketing ploy by liking the Facebook page prior to purchase ;) I've never seen the no-toppings approach before, and with a normal mix of stuff like you might get at Berryme or Noggi, this would work out to be really expensive REALLY fast. If you love your froyo pure and unadulterated, though, it's great. Early days, but the staff were also cool and friendly and the atmosphere was good. So check it out.

Does service even exist here?…read more I usually don't like to give bad reviews, but Pancake Manor definitely needs improvement. I came to Pancake Manor with a friend after needing to satisfy a long craving for some pancakes. The food is generally quite delicious, and the sides go well; however, the service leaves a lot to desire. We sat down and looked at the menu to make our choices. When we decided what we were going to order and the respective sides we wanted we struggled in getting anyone to come over and serve us. It wasn't a busy day, the restaurant only had about a third capacity, we weren't sitting in an ambiguous spot (right across from the main drinks area), nor was there a lack of staff. Staff just couldn't notice us. Staff would walk by and my friend would gesture for service but nothing happened. Eventually, we questioned whether table service existed and my friend then went to the payment counter to place an order. A staff member then came to take our order. The food came out quickly and, with the exception to the garlic bread (which wasn't as crisp as I hoped to to be), was delicious. Unfortunately, that is the only nice thing I can really say. The staff forgot our drinks order and I had to go up to the counter to remind them of our drinks. Furthermore, when we asked for water we were told we needed to get it ourselves (no problem with that). The person who I was with went to the places were glasses were kept to pour water but there was nothing there. We didn't raise anything to the store because we didn't want to make a fuss. Eventually after a good 15 minutes someone managed to notice that glasses were missing/yet to be cleaned and replaced the supply. The next problem was that after filling one glass there wasn't enough water.... After that, we didn't need anymore "service" and the meal was okay. It's a shame that what could have been a lovely meal could easily be spoiled by the poor service. I might visit again, but I won't hold expectations too high for now.

Following the performances at Ashintosh Coffeehouse I, a fundraiser for the Ashintosh Foundation,…read morethe band and friends headed out to the city to grab some late night at Pancake Manor! I don't know if it's worth getting excited over, as my last experience here wasn't all that great... but it is the only place around open till late! I had the waffles with ice cream last time, and was not at all impressed. What they call Belgian waffles are a very thin waffle of inferior texture - and the blueberries I had with them were quite disappointing. I also had the basket of chips (5.5) last time, which was decent, but not great, as they weren't crispy on the outside, and a bit soggy on the inside. This time around, I was craving something salty, so I decided on the hash browns (6.5). They were burnt on both sides - which is usually a sign of a nice crunchy texture - but in this case, it meant an impressively hard to handle slab of potato. When I mean impressive, I mean it was hard to break apart, hard to pick up with a fork, and just unpleasant in general. I didn't know one could mess up hashed browns so terribly, but I suppose a place that opens 24 hours in Brisbane is one of a kind, and doesn't need to serve good food...
