Headline: Cigar City CrossFit is ok…read more Is that a ringing endorsement? It is not. Is it the truth? You better believe it. I'm not here to blow smoke, I'm not here to be a hero, but I am here to give you the facts. So stick around and you might learn a thing or two about this gym, yourself, and potentially the price of rice in china, but I digress. A CrossFit gym's worth can be measured (in no particular order) by four factors; Programming, Community, Coaching, and Cash. Few understand this. But that's why I'm here, to open your eyes, to free your mind. Let's start with Programming. CCCF follows NCFit, an out-of-the-box cookie-cutter program provided by Jason Khalipa's CrossFit mega-affiliate of the same name. Does it matter that Jason is potentially the poorest-moving athlete to ever win the CrossFit Games? Potentially. But he still won so shut your mouth. Will this program send you to the CrossFit Games? Absolutely not. Will it leave you injured and broken because it's poorly thought out? Also no. NCFit is General Physical Preparedness programming 101. It's only as hard as you make it. Some might find it boring. Those people are mentally weak. Will you get fit if you follow this programming? Possibly. This is the Applebees of CrossFit programming. Is it gourmet? Not a chance. Is it food? Probably. Final score? 3/5. What about Coaching? Very much like the programming, CCCF's coaching is middle-of-the-road. The coaching is consistent in that they are held to a certain standard regarding how the classes are run and how they conduct themselves, which is refreshing when most CrossFit coaches read the workout, start the clock, and then sit on their phones for 55 minutes. At CCCF, the coaches are engaged and active. Are they the best coaches in the world? To most beginner athletes, probably. To the advanced athlete they might feel almost too structured. Personally I think the way they run the warm-ups is a complete waste of time, but I also don't warm up because lions don't stretch before they pounce. Final Score? 3.5/5. Community is where CCCF shines. The members are what makes this gym worth going to. There's never a dull moment, and jokes are the coin of the realm. Are they at others expense? You better believe it. But let's be honest, the world needs more of that these days. Even if you're a au-natural blue haired vegan you'll still have a great time. You will also definitely get made fun of, but let's be real, you deserve it. Every class starts with an ice-breaking question of the day that really gets the juices flowing. No topic is out of bounds, and there's always one person that will give an answer that cracks everyone up. Unless you don't have a sense of humor. In that case go to CrossFit Big Guava (just don't use the bathrooms). Final Score? 6/5. Last but not least, there's Cash. No one talks about this when it comes to CrossFit, but the one thing people forget is that a CrossFit gym is a business, that needs to make more money than it spends or else it will close. If you'd like to learn more about this concept, I recommend "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell. There's even an edition with little pictures for people who went to the University of Tampa (Go Bulls). CCCF actually operates like a functioning business. They have punch card options, membership rates, apparel, and equipment that is - mostly - well kept. The gym is clean, there's plenty of parking, and the homeless people in Ybor rarely make it more than a few steps in the door before someone kicks them out. Unfortunately most CrossFit gyms operate at either a loss or a razor thin margin. At least CCCF uses quick books. Final Score? 4/5. In closing, I'll leave you with this thought. Tampa doesn't really have a ton of exceptional CrossFit gyms. Westchase is easily the best, but after that, the only other truly viable gym is CCCF. Doesn't mean it's the greatest thing since slice bread, but it does mean it's better than no bread at all. And as the saying goes, let's get this bread.
