We only did the tour of the house but it was amazing. The two tour guides were so knowledgeable and friendly. The house is a replica of exactly what it would have looked like back in the day. There were so many special things to see in there including art from unusual materials, a wedding dress and a kitchen with old fashioned "appliances." My 5 year old was enthralled and it was short enough that she didn't surpass her attention span. The guides were truly incredible and the highlight of the experience. You can tell they care about preserving the history of it all. read more

My hubby and I stopped by on a whim at 3 p.m. today. We were lucky enough to get Mr. Brad Weinberg as our docent. He gave us a very interesting, fact filled tour of both the outside and inside of the house. Sally joined in and between the two of them, they covered downstairs and up, answered our questions and it surpassed our expectations! Make sure you ask about the art made from hair and feathers, dry commode toilet , the boots, and the bug doily! Thank you for a great time! read more

My kids school did a field trip to this museum. They all dress in era outfits, not only toured the museum but also did different stations where kids get to learn a bit about cooking, cars, games, and leather and woodwork from the time period. After the field trip we decided to go as a family, the tour is free of charge and so interesting. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. 100% recommend. read more

I was scheduled to work as a volunteer docent at the Bernhard Museum. I was given a training shift on a Sunday. Ms. Bryanna M. Ryan is the supervising curator for Placer County Museums. Somebody canceled my shift but no one informed me of this. I sat on the front porch of the Museum for half an hour waiting for someone to show up with a key and unlock the front door. No one showed up. Ms. Ryan is the supervising curator. It is her responsibility to either inform volunteers of cancellations or else hire employees who can do the cancellations correctly. Customer Service is amazing. The docent gave us an amazing tour at the end of her shift. I would recommend this place to others. Filled with history I never knew. I would love to come back during a living tour, like the kids get to enjoy when they come on their bus tour. Location: Convient to freeway. Free parking in their own lot. Winery: There is a winery in the own winery. It's quite fascinating as to how cool it is. Bathroom: They have an outdoor own for all to use. read more

January 29, 2022 This is Maestro or Maestra a few notes on the piano if you please, Seventeen, of this museum. I see last review is December 14, 2019, he is of Fortuna, California. The docent is Daphne Lake or Daphne Lane. Eight of us, the couple from Liberal, Kansas, three people just moved to Auburn two weeks ago from Louisiana, he starts his job January 31, 2022, a couple from Grass Valley, and me. All docents dressed in period attire. The tour is through downstairs area, due to Mister Corona Virus, upstairs area is closed. One learns of Bernhard Family. They came from Germany. One learns of the ways people lived, entertained, cooked, how upstairs area was what used be call Traveler's Inn. I do highly recommend visiting here. As now, modified hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from one pm to four pm. If get there too early, do what I did. Go to Gold Country Fairgrounds, eat at Old Town Pizza at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. I went one Sunday after church services at Salvation Army, walked there. Free admission. read more

Such a great time taking my two grammar school grandkids there this Fall. The staff gave us a personal guided tour. The eight-year-old and six-year-old were mesmerized with all of the details of each room. Our host was very kind and every question we asked was answered with enthusiasm. She even engaged the kids, drawing them in to quirky details of life during the Gold Rush. This is a must see while visiting Auburn. read more

Doesn't get any better! I've been on two field trips here with our school in the last five years. We dressed like pioneers and pretended to be pioneers for an entire day. The folks who work here are so nice and do a great job at making sure everyone has fun and learns a lot too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more

My family stopped in Old Town Auburn on the way to Tahoe and we decided to go into the Bernhard Museum. It was an 1800s home filled with period furniture. The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the family and operation of the home. My girls are 7 and 4 and were intrigued by the way people lived more than 100 years ago. We did have to keep a close eye on them because the house is filled antiques and the tour takes you right through the middle of everything. You can tour the home in less than an hour. There are also wagons and carriages on site to view as well as a winery. You can't get too close to the vehicles but they are cool to look at. read more

I went with my daughter's school here for a 3rd Grade field trip & let me tell you it is definitely a worth while experience! It was so much fun to dress up with her like it was really 1889, pack lunches in baskets, drink out of mason jars, & eat on the hillside. On the day of training (you have to train to be a volunteer to go with your child on this trip, for about a half hour a week before the actual trip) it was wonderful to tour the inside of the farm house (they let you tour on your day of training instead of when your child got to tour it on the field trip, because you were working at your station). The antiques that filled the home made you really believe that you were reliving 1889 & the tour guides of course made it a wonderful, educational experience for everyone. The only thing I wish is that they had more volunteers! It was fun to be able to dress up & help in the different stations: laundry, baking, crafts, woodworking, or leather. But I think we all would have had a grander experience if the Bernhard volunteers would have been demonstrating for us, instead of us parents doing it. Someone with the depth of knowledge of the history to make it come alive..... instead of me or a parent who knows very little, trying to give our children the full 1889 experience. And I would have liked to have been with my child the entire time & toured with her, instead of seeing her mainly at lunch & when she attended my station. But other than that it was a wonderful experience! Hey Auburn, lets have some more volunteers at this museum! If I didn't live so far away from it, I just might! It gave me a whole new appreciation for museums as living history, & I will definitely be checking out more of them with my family in the future!! read more

This was quite literally the WORST tasting experience I have ever had. Really. I asked if they offered any discounts and free tastings for industry employees. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. Instead I ended up getting hemming and hawing about how normally they only do that for winemakers or growers, and that their premium wines they would work a deal for those people but not the other wines because they were already priced so low, yadda, yadda, yadda. This went on for about 10 minutes and the whole time I still have yet to taste any wine! FFS! After all of that, we finally started tasting wine, if you want to call it that. Industry standard for tasting pours are 1 oz. As a former bartender, I KNOW what one flippin' ounce looks like. The lady that was doing the pouring must have gone to the Scrooge school of hospitality because the wine pours were about 1.5 tablespoons worth of wine. The heavy selling push is not like anything I have experienced at another winery. With each taste we were advised of the price of the bottle. The whole thing left me feeling gross. I would have given them one star based solely on experience but I actually did like the Semillion and their Primitivo. There were so many things that were in pour taste I really needed to write this review so I could wine about. read more

Had a very enjoyable visit to this very interesting place. For anyone interested in the history of Auburn and how people lived in the 19th century, this is a much recommended museum to visit. Our guide was enjoyable and very informative and all three of us who visited highly recommend this Museum. read more

The Tour with docents was fascinating. I especially enjoyed the house with the furnishings and thinking about all the families and people who lived in the house or visited when it was an inn. Be sure to notice the papier-mâché-dog candy dishes in the office room. I plan on visiting again it's a great place for families be sure to bring the kids. I had an amazing tour headed by the lovely Mrs. Hanson. She had so many fun and interesting facts about the history of the house, the usage of tools and furniture inside, and a lot of connections to the community. I highly recommend this museum if you love seeing how Victorians lived and the history of the mining town of Auburn! read more

I loved everything about this place! We walked from Old town to this wonderful farmhouse and were greeted with volunteers in turn of the century outfits. The ladies were all very informative of the history of this farmhouse and seemed to really enjoy talking about the people who used to live and work there. If you're in this area, this is a must see. read more

The house and grounds are beautiful, even more so after you see the pictures of what it looked like just ten years ago! The house has a lot of fascinating artifacts, including what is basically a human litter box in the main bedroom. OH, there's also some awesome framed Victorian hair decorations and other such neat things. read more

This museum was excellent! It has a lot of history. Our docent, Addah, was very knowledgeable and helpful. She happily answered any questions and even added more information that she thought we might find useful. I will definitely come back because the wine house was closed so I was not able to tour it. read more

Very cute place! Not exactly handi-cap friendly tho. I went with a third grade field trip. Had fun with the kids, and the children seemed to enjoy the workshops and stations although they really wanted to get their wiggles out. There is no place for kids to run or play and have fun... so it gets boring really quickly for the 8 year old crowd. read more

The Bernhard house is furnished as it was in the period when the Bernhard family occupied the home. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and always willing to answer any questions you may have. Plus, all museums in Placer County are free! read more
