The woman working on the women's side looked me up and down like the retail salesperson in Pretty Woman. That was the moment I decided not to buy from this store. Not because of the clothing. Not the prices. The look. So I left and picked up the fine art the gallery was holding for me. And I see other reviewers had the same experience. I hope the owner finds better help. read more

Visiting from Seattle WA. The women working today (07/21) were profiling the second we walked in. We were dressed nice for brunch but her facual expressions made it seem like were bums. On top of that they were making fun of the customer who walked out as we walked in. This is a little boutique shop that has casual and dressy clothing items on King Street. I found a couple sweaters that I liked, but they weren't available in my size and we're only available in larges are excellent. They have some long and short dresses for cocktail and dressy occasions as well. The clearance rack is in the rear of the store, by the wardrobe or dressing area. read more

If you have the money and want to have good service with beautiful well-fitting suits and clothes this is the place to go. The main time when you should go there as when they are having one of their sales what they call the "Red Letter B" sales which are always toward the middle of the summer for the summer and spring wardrobe and then late in the winter for the heavier clothes. Not that you need heavy clothes much at all here in Charleston but you never know. As it had been a while since I purchased some good suits and had a little bit of money to spend well not a little bit of money but you get the idea I went there on one of their super duper sales at the end of a red letter B sale and purchased two suits but still it was about $1,000 for the two suits together. As always I had Steve Berlin, the owner of the store, assisting me. I could go on and on about his dear departed father Henry who was the joy and the King of King Street who always had a kind word and a twinkle in his eye while politely pulling everyone's leg with his playful sense of humor. Still miss him but the store which he grew is still alive and well in downtown Charleston. And for you ladies there is a lady shop which has a separate entrance wood can be accessed also from the men's store which sits at the corner of King Street and Broad Street. read more

I had several pairs of pants tailored here, and my experience was very disappointing. When I first took my pants in, both the sales associate and the tailor were very pleasant. However, after I picked up the pants and tried them on, I realized they were all altered to be too small. In fact, one pair was so tight that when I tried them on and walked around a bit, the seam in the crotch ripped open. When I took the pants back to be fixed, I started to try my pants on so the tailor could see how much to let them out. Instead she said she would just let them out a bit. The tailor was helping another customer and seemed to have no interest in making sure my pants were properly fixed. I would have happily waited until the tailor was done with the other customer to ensure my pants were properly tailored. Then when I was giving my information to the sales associate, she started to ask for payment. I explained that I was getting my alterations fixed and had already paid once, and her response was "Okay, BYE." About a week later, I hadn't heard from Berlin's and wanted to know if my pants were ready. I went into the store where I again encountered the rude sales associate. I asked if my pants were ready and she responded "probably" and then went to the back of the store to retrieve them. My pants were indeed ready, but despite having my phone number, no one ever called to let me know they were ready. Then I asked if I could try the pants on to make sure they fit this time, and the sales associate just looked at me and said "All the dressing rooms are full." Feeling uncomfortable with the sale associate's rudeness, I left and tried my pants on at home only to find that they still don't fit properly. I will not be going back for a third time or ever again, and I am extremely disappointed with the poor quality of tailoring and rude customer service. read more

Cute little old-world boutique we stumbled upon while strolling down King Street. We took some time out of the heat to peruse through their wares and see if there was anything that piqued our interest. Found a really cute pair of shoes that ended up coming home with me. I went searching for a miracle this morning and I found it at Berlin's in Charleston. A last minute change in plans had created a need for me to get and needed to walk out the door carrying a tux that would look flawless (at 6'5", 230 lbs and size 14 shoes no small task) for an important event where I have to give a toast. The folks at Berlins said "no problem" and grabbed hold of me like I was on an extreme makeover tv show. A gentleman measured me in no time (I suspect he could have done just by eyeballing but he wanted to be sure). First tux they brought out was perfect. Matched exactly what I had in mind despite my rather vague direction. But the best part was when I was planning to wear my own shoes and the owner Steve came over and did an all out intervention and told me he couldn't let me go to the event wearing my shoes. He was very firm and assertive, but extremely courteous. I respected him for basically saying "hey if you go out wearing my tux, you need to be looking good because that's MY reputation at stake". Loved it, and he was absolutely right. I am sure I could have rented a tux someplace else in town, but there is no place where I would have gotten a better deal. I was in an out in a jiffy, the tux was superb, and the service spectacular. I would never consider renting anywhere else in town, even if it was half the price. This is the only place to go if you are serious about looking fantastic. read more

This place is very very very old-school but a great shop. I first shopped here in the 80s to buy suits but I no longer wear suits but they still have lots of other types of clothing. If you want to fit in old South of broad Charleston this is definitely your store. read more

I came in looking to buy some sport coats and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason or organization or division of labor on the men's section sales floor. Two salespersons seemed to be juggling 4-5 different customers in the men's section while salespersons were standing around in the women's section in the back - though they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I would suggest training/moving/surging the salespersons from the back up to the men's section to better meet customer needs in the future. The owner finally came out though they didn't appear to be managing the situation and it wasn't clear from the way they were dressed. They looked very timid and they were almost as confused as the salespersons I encountered. The salesperson who I was "working" with kept telling me that they "didn't have the proper expertise to advise me on sport coats" and I would have to wait until the other salesperson was through. My salesperson and the owner/manager never really figured out for me whether they could get the blazer in the size I wanted. I came down from Myrtle Beach just to pick up a few things while traveling and wanted to drop some coin. Oh well. Very disappointing experience. read more

My family and I live in Charleston and shop at Berlin's. We were walking in downtown today and my daughters dress had a button come loose we were on the sidewalk near, Berlin's Women, so we strolled in and asked for a safety pin to make a temp repair. The ladies working said oh no we will get that button sewn back on for you. The ladies found a t-shirt for my daughter to slip into and whisked her dress over to their seamstress whom had that button sewn back on in less then 5 minutes. Clothes look lovely but horrific service. We arrived at opening time (9:30), waited next door in friendly men's store, then waited another 10min outside at front door until 9:50. A young blonde woman walked by us, saw us, walked in a different entrance and then proceeded to turn on the lights and head to the back without acknowledging we were waiting much less opening the door. Needless to say, we left not wanting to patronize a business that is so disrespectful of customers. read more

My husband and I stopped into Berlin's while in Charleston to pick up a suit for a wedding. We found an absolutely gorgeous Hugo Boss suit that they had tailored in less than 24 hours. Presuming everything was high end quality, I had bought an expensive belt as an accessory. To my surprise and dissatisfaction, the belt color wore off at the buckle area. Unexpectedly I saw "made on China" imprinted on the back of the belt. Since the shoes were high quality I didn't even consider looking for China when purchasing. My daughter is getting married in Charleston April 2013. I am from the Philadelphia area and had been searching for months for something to wear in the April Charleston climate. I found a line on the internet that was sold one place in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh) and 3 stores in Charleston. My last vist we went to Berlins, Sarah was the associate that helped me find the PERFECT outfit for my daughters wedding. Everyone in the store was extremely gracious. Visiting Charleston, almost passed by this retro-looking, neon-sign storefront on the corner of King and Broad for flashier shopping establishments farther down King. But I could tell by the window dressing that there was something in there for me. And I am a fashion-forward dresser who leans toward the avant-garde and unique. But my instincts were correct. Berlin's had Equipment blouses, on sale! (And Equipment is usually found in the more hip boutiques.) For supplementing your wardrobe with an unusual or quality piece, this store is worth checking out. The sales associates were very friendly. In fact, I left the store without the Equipment blouse. But called when I returned home, and the sales associate cheerfully found the blouse I described and is shipping it to me. My friend also found a fun sweater coat there, on sale. I would definitely recommend skipping the chain stores that line King, and head to Berlin's first. read more
