The food wasn't what I expected in a farm to table restaurant. I ordered a burger (no bun), rare. I emphasized rare. After laughing about it, I saw the waitress circle rare on her ticket. The burger arrived well done and dry. The fries tasted like they were cooked in old oil. The waitress never came back to find out how things were or to refill our glasses. Thinking it was just the day, we came back for lunch again. I order the pork special without mashed potatoes. The waitress didn't ask if I wanted to add something, which I would have gladly paid extra for. The pork came a little rarer than I'm comfortable eating. Again the waitress never came back except to deliver our bill.

This place should be called two happy brothers…read more This place reminds me of my childhood, when my father would take me to the butcher, he would order the meat he wanted, then tell the guy behind the counter how he wanted it cut, then the meat would be wrapped in paper, then handed to you, you felt like this piece of meat retained a little dignity in death. A small Mexican butcher shop and grocery store, with that friendly neighborhood feel. House made Chorizo just like shake and bake offers up makes a great base for my home made Chili. Very high quality arachera (skirt steak) they will run it through the meat tenderizer for you for free. Nice pork chops, I prefer the skinny ones on the bone with all the fat on the ends, but they have the boneless American ones as well. One of my favorite services is they will hand cut to order whatever meat you want. Whole chicken, cut down into pieces, or big chunks for my arroz con pollo. If you order a ton of wings they will remove the tips for you and give them back so you can make stock. On the weekends they have decent carnitas by the pound, fair prices on basic vegetables. Always fresh tortillas and a good selection of Mexican essentials like chile's and sodas.

Over the past year, this farm has become my go-to source for oats, corn, and wheat. They have…read moreorganic, heirloom varieties I haven't seen anywhere else, their berries are clean and taste great, and prices so cheap I'm actually slightly concerned about the farm's long-term viability. (Please don't ever go out of business, my family needs you!) Also, what I appreciate most is how much they care about quality. They focus on organic, heirloom grains such as Turkey Red and Purple Straw wheats, Henry Moore Yellow Dent corn. Their website has a lot of useful information -- why heirloom varieties, why stone-ground, etc -- and I've learned a lot from talking to them, they're extremely helpful and seem passionate about what they do. Their packages also list the date that the berries were ground, and most of the time it's only a few days old. That's just not something you can get at the supermarket, where the product is months old before it even hits the shelves, or even co-ops or larger operations such as Janie's Mill, where I think it still runs weeks.

It's used to kill the plant so the oats start to dry sooner and are easier to harvest. It is strictly prohibited by the USDA's National Organic Program. Bad stuff to ingest. Never saw oats on "The Dirty Dozen" list of foods to buy Organic only, but it should be there. We started buying our oat groats at the local store which carried the Bob's Red Mill Organic ones. Then we found Brian Severson Farms online. Great product at a much cheaper price, even including shipping. All of their crops are non-GMO and many certified organic. Everything is grown and processed on their farm. According to their website, they carry wheat products, oat products, organic blue, red and white corn products, non-GMO yellow corn products, popcorn and popcorn flour and buckwheat flour. I ordered online and our oat groats arrived within a week. We are happy to have found this company and will use them again. * * *Update March 1 * * * I just ordered 15 pounds of their non-GMO and certified organic heirloom Pennsylvania Dutch Butter Popcorn. Pfaff's Bakery - A Route 66 Sugar Rush Worth Every Mile…read more Walking into Pfaff's feels like opening the door to a time capsule... one that smells like maple, chocolate, and everything good about being alive. There's something comforting about a place that's been doing its thing since 1954, and clearly doing it right. The display case? Dangerous. In the best way. Everything looked so inviting it turned into a full internal debate between my eyes, my taste buds, and my very real pastry weakness. Spoiler: the pastries won. The donuts were some of the best I've had in a long time. Soft, light, just the right amount of sweet without tipping into sugar overload. My favorite was the one that reminded me of a palmier... flaky, delicate, and honestly a little heavenly. Service could use a bit of an upgrade on the friendly department. We're in the middle of a six-week road trip, and this stop, a small detour between Chicago and St. Louis, ended up being one of those unexpectedly perfect moments. Good coffee, great donuts, and a bonus hit of Route 66 nostalgia (yes, I'm fully that person). If you're anywhere nearby, don't overthink it. Just go. And maybe order one extra... you'll understand why.
