They could power a city. My chest reverberated with anxiety. Is time a measurement of movement and is my understanding of history just a notion of space passed. Passed. Past. Am I remembering, or sitting backward in a station wagon watching the family vacation depart the present? I cannot experience space without thinking of it in size and that act of thinking in such largeness presupposes that I contemplate the distance in metered intervals, of which, I can only comprehend through relation to time. And daily, or revolutionary as in revolving, there is a march onward so constant the even poor Sisyphus takes note. Mine has always been in that Sisyphusian effort; the rhythmic undertones of life. And never have I become aware of the dark confusion as when my head rests on the Metra glass of the west line 7:31, Elmhurst to Ogilvie, south tracks. The vibrations of the train finely rattles my skull just so. My teeth loosely touching and carrying the reverberation into a internalized mosquito buzz. Eyes half shut and scared about the details missing from my office politics, the trees outside click by; raising and fainting intersection dings. Will I be at work in 20 minutes or 10 miles? It this time vibrating my bones, or is it the rough grooves of terrain, ever present, ever the friction. If you see something say something. Tickets out.

There's a modest indoor waiting area that stays warm on the inbound platform (north side of the tracks on Crescent Blvd.), and covered outdoor waiting areas on both sides of the tracks. It's also accessible from the Illinois Prairie bike & pedestrian path, with a bicycle repair station nearby in the public park (Prairie Path Park) to the south. There's plenty of parking up and down the line, and there's a Pace bus stop for the 715 north and south busses. This station features a pedestrian tunnel under the tracks, so you can cross over even with trains approaching. There's an automated PA system and LED sign boards indicating arrival times for trains, and delays. Sadly, the Union Pacific West (UP-W) line is one of the lines more-prone to delays during peak hours (at least compared to other lines I've ridden) due to the never-ending Third Main Line project, some track work near Geneva, or on the eastbound past Oak Park (I don't know if it's track work or regular congestion). In fairness, it seems like every Metra line is getting bogged down the closer you get to the city. Metra staff or contractors seems to clean up fairly regularly, as I rarely see much garbage or dirt in / around the station. Garbage cans seem to be empties regularly enough, that they never seem overfilled. There is plenty of lighting around the station and parking lots, there are a few cameras around the station, and it seems like the area is patrolled by local police frequently enough. You're walking distance to the Main Street shopping area, so there's lots to do in the area between departures. If I'm in the area, I'm not really here for the station, but the station does its job well enough and is a fine gateway to/from the Glen Ellyn Main Street shopping area.

There is a carnival, massive sound stage, beer tent, train displays, swap meet, food vendors, model railroad layout and miniature train rides. The station fills with rail fans of all ages to watch the trains with all real life rail operations cutting right through the festival. The fest last about a week but on one Saturday there is a line up of real trains/cars that you can walk on and walk through. Metra always a locomotive on display that the adults and children can walk through and sit at the controls for pictures. Metra and the village really put on a nice festival for a great family outing which is usually in early June. I will also stop by when the festival is not going on when in the area to do some Rail fanning because it is the lead into the big rail yard with lots of action.

It may seem that I should have simply stayed at the hotel at O'Hare, but blah, there is nothing to do out there. I'd much rather be in the city. Anyway, back to the story, I used the Metra to get to the conference. It is easy and smooth. I could relax, work, read or better yet, Yelp! while on the train. I have been told that you are allowed to bring alcohol on the train and drink while riding... I don't know if you are 'allowed' or nobody cares to care if you drink on the train. If anyone has an official ruling on this, please let me know...
