Mountain Hostel

Mountain Hostel

(6 reviews)

This hostel is straight out of a fairy tale, and it has been in operation for years. (I first…read morestayed there over 30 years ago). The views from this hostel are magical and breathtaking, and nothing could be more relaxing than sitting out back with the whole mountain valley below. This place is so relaxing and charming that I would opt for it over any 5 star hotel. I can't wait to recapture a bit of nostalgia on my next visit to the area by staying a night or two at one of the best hostels in Switzerland. The Mountain Hostel is also a great jumping of point from which to hike up the mountain. A word of warning though, that hike is no joke, so unless you're in shape, you may want to consider taking the cable car up to the Schilthorn Restaurant.

This is one of the greatest hostels I've ever stayed in. There's nothing quite like having a bed…read moreright next to a window that opens up to the view and smell of the Swiss Alps. The beds weren't the most comfortable, but you can't beat the view. We stayed in a 16 bed female dorm but I think there were only about 6 other people in there. The dorm was on the upper level and the showers and bathroom were on the lower level, with the common area, kitchen and bar being on the main level. They have laundry available on site for a small fee and cheap wifi. They also have a kitchen where you can cook whatever your heart desires but I'm pretty sure the closest grocery store is the next town up the cable car, Mürren. They had musical instruments for anyone's enjoyment but the best part was just sitting outside and staring at those beautiful mountains. Gimmelwald was one of my favorite places I experienced on my tour of Europe and I desperately want to go back. I would never stay anywhere else but Mountain Hostel (I don't think there's another hostel in Gimmelwald, anyway). They have rooms for families also which I thought was really cool. Everyone was very respectful of everyone else and even though people stayed up late in the common room, they couldn't be heard in the dorms upstairs. Mountain Hostel was a great break from EXPENSIVE Switzerland. I will be back, Gimmelwald!

Berghütte Mönchsjochhütte - Hot chocolate and vegetable soup

Berghütte Mönchsjochhütte

After the challenging hike up to Monchsjochhutte, we were pleasantly surprised with how good the…read morefood was! My husband got a hot chocolate and the vegetable soup with sausage. The sausage was SO good. Prices are in line with what you would expect in Switzerland. But after that hike, the food hit the spot.

If you are reading this review, you have probably already made the journey to Jungfraujoch (or are…read moreplanning on making it), which means you have spent quite a bit of money getting there. While doing your research, you have probably realized that all of the food options in the main area (the part by the train station with the viewing platform and gift shops) are also very expensive. While there are nice views from many of the restaurants in that main area, none of them are really all that good, they are very crowded, and all of them will set you back quite a few Francs. However, if you are up for a little hike through the snow, you can enjoy a peaceful alpine cabin with even better views than the main Jungfraujoch building, more authentic and tasty food options, and better prices. Like most worthwhile goals, getting to the "Mönchsjochhütte" is not an easy task, but the reward is great. After all, you are hiking to the highest occupied hut in Switzerland at 12,000 feet (or 3,658 meters) above sea level! Yes, once you leave the main building, you will be trudging through the snow up hill for over an hour (they say the hike is 45 minutes, but unless you are acclimatized to the altitude and in amazing shape, you'll probably take longer than that...make sure to wear sunscreen too!). Along the way, you will be treated to amazing views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers, and the path is groomed daily to ensure the hike will be safe. Once you get to the hut, you'll find very few people, breathtaking views, and a truly authentic Swiss mountain dining experience (as well as bragging rights). I will mostly let the photos I took of my dining experience speak for themselves (they should be below). However, I will say that the coffee was really, really good, and the home-made potato and vegetable soup with pork sausage was super tasty and filling. The hut is heated, has comfy seating, and you will be able to charge your phone/camera. You can also stay overnight at the cabin in very rustic accommodations for less than 30 Francs per night...a total bargain! The trip back to the main building is much shorter: it's downhill the entire way, so you can probably make it in 30 minutes if you are in reasonable shape. After arriving back at the super touristy main area, you'll quickly realize that your hike to the Mönchsjochhütte and your lunch will be your fondest memories of your trip to the Jungfraujoch.
